Chapter 83 Gabriel Naturally Held Jessica in His Palm
The doctor mentioned a two-day hospitalization; however, in reality, Jessica could return home by the evening of the following day, essentially resulting in just a single night spent in the hospital.
The next evening, Jessica hurried to pick up Danielle, who was about to have dinner at the kindergarten. After getting off near the house, she carried Danielle all the way home. Danielle held Jessica's face in her arms, staring with round big eyes, and asked in surprise, "Mommy, is your neck not hurting anymore?"
"I'm not so fragile. I'm almost fine now. Carrying you home is absolutely no problem." Jessica pinched her little cheek and said, "If you dare to draw me as a monster again, I will definitely have no problem pinning you to the wall and giving you a beating."
Danielle quickly kissed Jessica's cheek several times.
After entering the house, Jessica habitually put Danielle on the sofa. In the past, Danielle would climb onto the couch every time she came back, but since Spencer arrived, she would run straight into the main bedroom every time.
Today was no exception. After putting Danielle down, Jessica quickly washed her hands and went into the kitchen.
During those days when her neck was injured, Jessica couldn't take care of Danielle personally. She felt guilty and wanted to make some delicious food to compensate Danielle.
"Uncle Spencer, I'm back. Do you miss me?" Danielle bounced into the main bedroom.
Jessica opened the refrigerator, searched for usable ingredients, and after rummaging inside for a while, she suddenly noticed that the main bedroom seemed unusually tranquil following Danielle's joyful completion of her sentence. Danielle didn't laugh and chat with Spencer anymore, which was very strange.
Jessica took out chicken wings from the refrigerator to thaw in the microwave, then walked out and saw that the bedroom door was open.
Danielle, with tears in her big eyes but not falling, stood dumbfounded in front of the door, looking in Jessica's direction.
Jessica was momentarily stunned, walked over, and turned on the light in the main bedroom, where was the same as usual, but the man who should have been resting and recuperating was not there.
Jessica stood still for a moment. Danielle's small hand suddenly climbed up and grabbed her clothes, choking, and said, "Mommy, does Uncle Spencer leave? He said he wouldn't leave without a word. Why does he suddenly leave?"
Jessica's gaze returned from the empty bed here . She took a barely audible deep breath, not knowing what emotions she was feeling at the moment, exhaled, and then took another breath.
Danielle's big tears couldn't be held back, falling down her face as she cried sadly. "Why does he leave? He said he liked Mommy. Why did he suddenly leave, Mommy?"
Whether she was annoyed by Spencer leaving without a word or by Danielle's sad crying, Jessica took two more breaths and gently patted Danielle's head to comfort her. "If he wants to leave, let him leave. We shouldn't be people in the same world in the first place."
No matter if he was Spencer or someone else.
In the end, he was just a passerby she happened to save, and his life should not have intersected with hers and Danielle's at all.
After comforting Danielle on the sofa for a while, Danielle, afflicted by coughing spasms, clutched a large teddy bear and huddled on the couch in silence.
Jessica went back to the kitchen, took out the chicken wings, and decided to make Danielle's favorite cola chicken wings, along with fries, cookies, and donuts. These were all Danielle's favorites, but Danielle just sat on the sofa, hugging the teddy bear, and remained silent.
Danielle was profoundly pessimistic. Children's emotions are so honest, unlike adults, who are good at hiding their feelings.
When Jessica opened the refrigerator again, she took out some more chicken pieces, intending to make more to try to cheer up Danielle.
As she reached into the refrigerator, she suddenly heard the sound of the front door opening.
"Uncle Spencer!" Danielle, with red eyes from crying, looked towards the door and then let go of the teddy bear in her arms, running straight towards the tall figure at the door.
Gabriel saw Danielle's recently teary eyes and caught the little figure that pounced on him, "Why are you crying?"
Danielle pouted, "Mommy and I think you leave."
Gabriel heard the sound of the refrigerator door closing in the kitchen, repositioned Danielle back onto the sofa, then pinched her little nose, "What do I say?"
Danielle sat on the sofa, looking up at him with red eyes, pouting, "You won't leave without saying goodbye."
"Let's forget about this time. Remember to trust me first, no matter what happens in the future. Trust is the most basic principle between people, okay?" Gabriel looked at Danielle with his deep, dark eyes, seeing her red eyes, red nose, and even a bit choked up. "This won't happen again."
Danielle seemed to understand vaguely and nodded but still felt a bit scared and wronged, holding onto him and not wanting to let go.
After a few minutes, Gabriel heard no more movement in the kitchen, pointing in that direction, and Danielle understandingly let go of his hand generously, letting him check on Mommy.
Jessica took out the chicken pieces but forgot to thaw them. She stood by the fridge, attempting to pry apart the frozen pieces with her bare hands. Despite her reddening fingers from the cold, her expression stayed stoic. Gabriel came in and saw this scene.
Jessica was struggling with the frozen pieces in her hands. Suddenly, a hand reached out from behind and held her wrist. She paused slightly and turned to look at the man behind her. "What are you doing..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the man had already taken the chicken pieces from her hand. He smoothly placed the chicken pieces in the microwave to thaw.
Jessica was surprised. Did she really forget to thaw them?
No wonder they were so cold.
In just a few seconds, Jessica's initial confusion turned into stern. She straightened her back, pointed her finger at his chest as he turned around, and said in a displeased tone, "I give you the house’s keys to help me pick up Danielle earlier. If you really want to leave next time, remember to leave them behind! Also, stay away from Danielle in the future. In just a few minutes, you made her cry like this. All the things I said to her last time were in vain! Children are not used to goodbyes. If you leave a psychological shadow on her, I won't..
Jessica was eloquent, while Gabriel stood beneath the kitchen light, looking down at her without interrupting. Suddenly, he grasped the finger she had jabbed at his chest, then enclosed her entire cold hand within his, their palms fitting together with remarkable ease.
