Chapter 469 So What If It Was Filmed

The two people had these big, bulging backpacks and looked pretty ordinary, but something about them seemed off.

They didn't head towards the security checkpoint. When one of them noticed Nolan staring, he casually pulled out a pack of cigarettes and was about to light one up. A nurse nearby reminded him that smoking wasn't allowed in the hospital. From a distance, it looked like he was just asking the nurse where the smoking room was. The nurse reluctantly pointed to the end of the corridor on that floor, and the two nodded and walked away like it was no big deal.

Nolan had been in this line of work for a while, so his instincts were pretty sharp. He took another look and saw the two had gone into the smoking room. He figured they probably weren't media reporters trying to sneak a photo of Jessica, so he relaxed a bit but still positioned himself behind Jessica to shield her as much as possible.

"Is Donald in room V06?" Jessica asked as they passed through security.

The nurse next to her saw the name "Jessica" on her license and nodded, "Yes, but room V06 is an intensive care unit. Only one family member is allowed in at a time, and there's already someone in there. Mrs. Jenner, you'll have to wait outside for a bit."

"Okay, got it," Jessica said as she headed towards Donald's room.

After passing through security, Nolan glanced back again. The two people still hadn't come out of the smoking room, making him think he might be overreacting. Even if Jessica was at the hospital, she was just visiting an elderly family member. If she got photographed, it wouldn't be a big deal. It wouldn't be worth the paparazzi's effort to sneak in for a shot.

Besides, if any photos did get out, they'd just show Jessica taking time out of her busy schedule to visit Donald, which would actually help counter the rumors about her being estranged from the Jenner family. It'd be good PR.

So what if she got photographed?

Jessica was a dedicated artist. From their first meeting today, it was clear that most of the industry rumors about her were just that—rumors. She was poised and well-spoken, no wonder so many directors liked working with her.

Jessica had already reached the door of Donald's room.

It was indeed an intensive care unit, but it was also one of the VIP rooms in Washington's biggest and fanciest hospital. Without even looking inside, you could tell the environment was top-notch. Outside the room, there were at least five nurses on standby, along with several people who seemed to be family or friends of the Jenner family, quietly chatting. When they saw Jessica approaching, some looked surprised, like they didn't recognize her, while a couple did recognize her but clearly didn't expect her to show up.

Through a small glass window outside the ICU, Jessica saw Donald lying on the bed, looking drowsy. He had medical devices attached to his fingers, body, and various parts, with several thin tubes inserted into him. A blanket lightly covered him, making it hard to see exactly where the tubes went, but from this angle, he looked very weak. The various instruments in the room displayed real-time monitoring data of Donald's condition.

Seeing this scene, Jessica's eyes lingered for a moment, and she was taken back to over twenty years ago when she was just a little kid, standing in a hospital room, watching her mom lying motionless on a bed, also covered in tubes, until she passed away.

What was she thinking back then? She was only a few years old, not even five. But she already knew her mom's death had something to do with Eugene and the woman by his side.

The Jenner Villa had haunted her since childhood; she never had a normal day there and never wanted to go back.

For her, only Danielle was her true family.

Looking at Donald's sleeping face, he was once a tall and thin old man. It was clear he had been quite handsome in his youth, but now, due to the torment of illness, his cheekbones were sunken, his complexion sallow, and he looked utterly exhausted.

For an old man in such a state, dying might actually spare him from suffering.

But he was Donald, and it wasn't about whether he wanted to die. It was about whether the Jenner family could let him die before resolving all their "issues."

The turmoil in Washington's business circle was no joke. Every little change would be noticed by these sharp observers.

For instance, Jessica was just here to see Donald for the last time, but the eyes of those behind her were almost burning holes through her back.

"The person inside is Marshall," Nolan said as he walked up behind Jessica. "Marshall has probably been in there for a while, and it's finally his turn to go in. But it looks like Donald has been unconscious for a long time and can't communicate normally."

Jessica looked at the situation in the room for a while without speaking. She turned back and looked at Nolan, asking if he needed her to help deliver something to Marshall.

Nolan took out a stack of documents in a manila envelope from his briefcase and showed them to her. "Marshall should be coming out soon. I'll give these to him directly. If you want to go in, just do it later. Marshall and I will discuss the show afterward; he doesn't know you've already signed."

Jessica withdrew her gaze and saw that Marshall seemed to sense the eyes outside. He turned to look and, upon seeing Jessica and Nolan, his eyes lit up. He was delighted to see Jessica there and made a silent gesture from inside the room, indicating he would be out soon.

Jessica nodded.

"Jessica," someone suddenly called from behind.

She turned around and saw a man in his thirties, wearing glasses that made him look scholarly, who had been standing outside the room. He greeted her politely, "I'm Samuel Jenner. I didn't expect our first meeting to be here. I'm your family. You can call me Samuel."

"Nice to meet you." Jessica seemed to be smiling, but her eyes showed little emotion, and the smile didn't reach them. "I've lived for twenty-six years and never knew I had so many families. How come I suddenly have another one?"

Samuel wasn't offended by her sarcastic tone. He smiled politely and said, "It is indeed presumptuous, and it is our first meeting. I am Mr. Jenner's grandnephew. I returned from abroad last year and have been working with your father in Washington for over a year. You may know little about me, but I've heard quite a bit about you."
