Chapter 129 He Just Found Out, and the Baby Is Gone 1
These words pierced Gabriel's heart like a sharp thorn.
If he could, he wished he had never said and she had never heard.
But there were no do-overs in this world.
Gabriel walked toward Jessica, pulling her into his arms. His head rested against her neck as he murmured in agony, "Jessica, I'm sorry. You were right. I regret it. I don't want a divorce at all. Let's not get divorced, okay?"
He held Jessica so tightly, as if he wanted to merge her into his very bones, into his life.
If it were before, Jessica would have softened.
But this time was different. Every time she thought of the baby's departure, her heart felt like it was being cut by a knife.
She's in so much pain, it's overwhelming.
She couldn't even forgive herself, so how could she forgive him?
"I'm sorry!" As she said this, Jessica couldn't help but shed tears.
After everything she had been through, she thought her heart was invulnerable, as hard as iron, but she still felt pain.
She admitted she still loved him.
But this world was full of helplessness.
She couldn't get over the loss of the baby. Every time she saw him, she would think of that car accident, and the blood that flowed uncontrollably.
If... if only he had come sooner.
Jessica dared not think further.
Because the more she thought, the more she blamed him.
"I'm sorry, honey, I was wrong. Can you give me another chance? This time I won't let you down. I will cherish you." Gabriel promised in agony as he held her.
It was only at this moment that he realized how terrified he was of losing her.
If saying "I'm sorry" could bring her back to him, he was willing to say it a thousand times, ten thousand times.
Jessica wiped away her tears, turned around, and looked at Gabriel with calm eyes. "I gave you chances, again and again. But when I watched you give up on me for Diana, do you know how much it hurt?"
Jessica continued, "I'm an ordinary person with flesh and blood. Did you ever think that I would feel pain when you abandoned me countless times?"
Gabriel said, "I know you wanted a divorce because of Diana. I've already sent her abroad. I promise I won't contact her again. Can we not get divorced?"
Hearing this, Jessica suddenly laughed.
She shook her head, a tragic smile forming on her lips as she looked at Gabriel. "Do you think it's just because of Diana? It's not. It's not just her. I wouldn't choose to divorce just because of Diana."
Gabriel asked anxiously, "Then what else?"
Jessica slowly placed hands on her lower abdomen, and her gaze gentle.
"Do you know? There was once a tiny, fragile life growing here. He was so small, so delicate, but I heard his heartbeat. I even saw him in the ultrasound. He was dancing in my belly, so adorable. Do you know how much I loved him? I was willing to sacrifice everything to protect him, but now, he's gone. He's gone. He left. He doesn't want me anymore."
By the end, Jessica was crying uncontrollably, her voice trembling beyond recognition. She bent over, squatting on the ground, hugging herself tightly, burying her head between her knees, as if only this could alleviate a fraction of the pain.
Gabriel stood there, dumbfounded, as if rooted to the spot, not even moving his eyes.
His whole body was stiff, like a wooden statue, and he even thought he was in a dream.
A baby?
She really had a baby.
But now the baby was gone and had left them.
So she hadn't lied to him; she was truly pregnant.
But he had thought she was scheming to deceive him.
Gabriel thought, 'How ridiculous, Gabriel, you are nothing but a joke, a colossal joke. Do you know how close you were to happiness? But you didn't cherish it; your happiness was destroyed by your own hands, discarded by you.'
Jessica squatted on the ground, crying uncontrollably, her body trembling incessantly.
Gabriel didn't know how he walked to her side, like a walking corpse. He squatted beside Jessica, holding her in his arms. "I'm sorry. I know you don't want to hear anything I say right now."
At this point, he choked up as well. "I didn't know you were pregnant, and we had a baby, Jessica. Why didn't you tell me?"
Jessica lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes looking at him. "Of course, I wanted to tell you. You are the baby's father. I wished to see you as happy, as excited, as expectant as I was for his arrival."
Thinking of the cruel words he had once said, Jessica's heart ached unbearably.
Jessica shouted, "But, you wanted a divorce from the start. I asked you what would happen if we had a baby. You said it wouldn't change anything, and you would still divorce me and marry Diana. How could I dare to tell you? You even said baby would be a burden. Well, now you got what you wanted. The burden you spoke of is gone. Are you happy now?"
Jessica hadn't intended to get angry, but every time she closed her eyes and thought of the things he had said, she couldn't control herself in pain.
She frantically pushed and hit Gabriel.
Her hands even clawed at his face, leaving several bloody scratches that oozed tiny drops of blood.
But even so, she couldn't vent her anger or ease the pain in her heart.
The pain was too much, too intense for her to bear.
Since the baby left, she had been holding back, numbing herself, telling herself it wasn't real.
But now, she couldn't hold back any longer. All her anger found an outlet at this moment, roaring wildly.
Did she blame him?
Yes.
Of course, she did. How could she not?
If he had arrived sooner, the outcome might have been different. She might not have lost the baby. Even if she had, she wouldn't be in so much pain, so much agony.
In the end, Gabriel's face was covered with scratches from Jessica, and his clothes had their buttons torn off, hanging loosely on him, and his tie was thrown on the ground in a mess.
He stood in front of her, looking disheveled, no longer the handsome man he once was.
He lowered his head, his hands clenched into fists, not moving an inch, not even stepping back, just standing there, letting Jessica hit him.
"Why don't you move?"
Lowering her hands, Jessica looked at him with eyes red from anger.
Gabriel remained silent.
Gabriel still stood there, his back straight, not moving an inch.
Jessica roared at him, "Move! Why don't you move?"
