Chapter 643 The Taft Family's Past

It was a call from Gabriel.

Gabriel's voice had dropped to a noticeably low tone, "Quentin's surgery was very successful, he's out of danger now, so don't worry."

"Also, Mrs. Taft has been here the whole time, so you shouldn't come over right now."

Hearing this, Grace couldn't hold back any longer and hugged Jessica tightly, tears streaming down her face.

But this time, Grace was relieved, happy, and took a deep breath.

Jessica took Grace's phone. "Okay, honey, I know, I'll stay here with Grace."

"Mrs. Taft is here, so I can't say much. I'll hang up now."

"Alright."

As soon as Gabriel hung up, Quentin was being wheeled out of the emergency room.

Ruby rushed over at the same time.

"Quentin, it's Mom."

"Can you hear me?"

Ruby followed the gurney, calling out softly as she walked.

But Quentin was unconscious, so there was no response.

Once they reached the ward and everything was settled, Quentin's heartbeat and other vitals stabilized, and Ruby finally breathed a sigh of relief.

She then looked at Gabriel, "Gabriel, thank you so much for all your help with Quentin today."

"Mrs. Taft, you're too kind. Quentin is my friend."

"Still, I must thank you. I'm someone who always repays kindness. You've been a great help to Quentin, and I'll remember that. It's very late now, and I don't want to keep you any longer. Go home and rest; I'll take care of Quentin."

"Alright, Mrs. Taft. If you need anything, just let me know."

After Gabriel left, he went to another room to meet Jessica.

As soon as they saw him, Jessica and Grace both asked, "How is Quentin?"

"Quentin has been moved to a regular room. He lost a lot of blood, but the wound isn't deep and missed any vital organs. The doctor said he should start waking up once the anesthesia wears off, likely by tomorrow morning." Gabriel replied.

Grace looked at him gratefully, "Thank you so much for today."

Gabriel reminded, "You're Jessica's friend, so I'll help however I can. Mrs. Taft is staying with him, so you shouldn't go over for the next few days. I'll let you know when you can visit him."

"Alright."

Jessica then asked, "Grace, do you want to rest here or find a hotel?"

"I'll just stay here tonight," Grace replied.

Jessica shook her head firmly, "No, the conditions here are too simple, and if you stay in the hospital, you might not be able to resist seeing him. If Mrs. Taft catches you, it could be dangerous."

"Jessica has a point," Gabriel agreed.

Grace thought for a moment, "Then let's find a hotel nearby."

Gabriel nodded, "I'll have Oscar arrange it and take you there."

"Alright, thank you."

After a busy night, as they drove back, Jessica leaned against Gabriel, exhausted.

"If you're tired, just sleep on me," Gabriel said softly.

"No, I won't sleep. If I wake up when we get out of the car, I won't be able to fall back asleep."

"If you fall asleep, I'll carry you up, very carefully, without waking you."

Jessica shook her head, "Honey, you're very tired today. I don't want you to have to carry me upstairs when you're this exhausted."

Gabriel smiled and pinched her cheek, "You're so considerate, it makes me very happy."

Besides, thinking about Grace's situation, Jessica couldn't sleep.

"Honey, do you think Mrs. Taft is really that scary? I've met her a few times with you, and she seemed quite kind and friendly."

Gabriel playfully tapped her nose, "That's because you're my wife, Mrs. Walton."

"What do you mean?"

Gabriel patiently explained.

"Mrs. Taft has very strong views on social status. In her mind, Quentin absolutely cannot marry a woman who isn't of equal standing. She must be a socialite and come from a family that can help Quentin's career."

"Not only that, she looks down on ordinary wealthy families. The daughter-in-law she chooses must come from a prestigious family with significant power and wealth. The Stewart family is one of her top choices."

"And Caroline, the daughter of the Stewart family, has always admired Quentin. So this high-society marriage is something she will not allow to fail. She won't let anyone ruin it."

"Besides her, the Taft family rules are the same. Any man of the Taft family must marry someone of equal standing."

Jessica couldn't help but sigh deeply and asked curiously.

"What about Mrs. Taft? What was her status? Which family did she come from?"

"You've hit the nail on the head."

Gabriel explained, "In all the years the Taft family men have married, Mrs. Taft is the only exception."

"What exception?"

"Quentin's grandfather had a very beloved younger sister, Quentin's great-aunt, who married into another wealthy family early on. But after several years, she couldn't get pregnant."

"It was later discovered that she couldn't conceive due to health reasons. Because of the Taft family's status, her husband didn't dare offend them but still wanted children, so he kept a mistress who eventually showed up pregnant."

"When this was discovered, Quentin's great-aunt couldn't take it, and the two families had a falling out, leading to a divorce. It was a huge scandal at the time."

"After that, Quentin's great-aunt adopted Mrs. Ruby Taft."

Jessica took a moment to process this.

"So, Ms. Taft and Mrs. Taft were technically cousins. How did they end up getting married?"

"You're right. There were reasons for their marriage: Mrs. Taft was taken back by her biological parents when she was ten. To show gratitude for saving her life, she didn't change her name, but she was no longer considered an adopted daughter of the Taft family, so they weren't related anymore."

"Then Quentin's father was an only child but had been sickly since childhood. Strangely enough, after they married, Mr. Taft's health improved, and Mrs. Taft gave him three children. But unfortunately, eight years later, Mr. Taft passed away.
