Chapter 470 Past Wounds
Alexis nodded sympathetically. "Alright, I know. You love Jessica, the Jessica you so carefully protect. How could Mom bear to blame you?"
"I just feel sad that your bond is so shallow."
Vincent said nothing. Indeed, there was no bond between them.
Countless times, he had wondered if everything would have been different if he had met Jessica first.
Unfortunately, there's no such thing as 'what ifs.'
So now, all he could do was wish her well.
Seeing her happy would bring him peace.
Ever since Gabriel mentioned to Freddy and Gilbert about having a baby sister, both Gilbert and Freddy had kept it in mind.
While taking a bath, they kept asking him, "Dad, can you hurry up? You're so slow, like a snail. At this rate, when will we get to see our sister?"
"Yeah, we can't wait any longer."
Because of Gilbert and Freddy's eagerness, Gabriel specifically pulled Jessica into the bathroom that night.
The space was large, and the soundproofing was good, ensuring they wouldn't disturb Gilbert and Freddy.
Even though she was already teased to the point of being unbearable, Jessica still remembered. "Honey, wait, use a condom."
Gabriel looked at Jessica, his eyes particularly deep, his voice slightly breathless, "Jessica, I want a daughter, can we?"
This answer was completely unexpected for Jessica.
She was shocked.
Reaching out, she gently pushed Gabriel away and then tidied her long hair, "I'm sorry, honey..."
Jessica covered her cheeks with her hands, and before she could finish her words, she choked up.
Some memories suddenly flooded her mind like a tide.
Realizing something was wrong, Gabriel immediately put a coat on her and then held her in his arms. "What happened? Tell me, okay?"
Jessica just kept shaking her head, not saying a word.
"Jessica."
"Honey."
But no matter how Gabriel called, Jessica still covered her cheeks in silence.
In the end, he could only turn her around and forcefully remove her hands.
When he pulled them away, Jessica's face was already covered in tears, her clear eyes filled with tears, red and swollen.
It was evident how heartbroken she had just been.
"No matter what happened, tell me, we'll face it together, okay?" Gabriel wiped the tears from her face, gently coaxing her.
Jessica finally choked out, "Honey, I'm just scared."
"After Freddy and Gilbert were born, I took them abroad. Do you know how broken and helpless I was during that time? At first, I just felt anxious, thinking it was because I was too worried about Freddy's health."
"But later, I found myself not happy at all. No matter how adorably Freddy and Gilbert looked at me, no matter how brightly they smiled at me, I couldn't smile. Whenever I saw them, I just wanted to cry."
"One time, it was raining heavily, and Gilbert was lying on the bed crying loudly. I suddenly felt so annoyed, I had an impulse to throw him away. Freddy, however, was sleeping soundly. I held him and sat by the window. The window was open, and at that moment, I felt like jumping out and ending it all."
"Another time, I was pushing Gilbert's stroller with one hand and holding Freddy with the other. Without realizing it, I ran a red light. The driver braked sharply and came down cursing at me. I was stunned in the middle of the road, suddenly thinking it would be nice if I just got hit and died."
"After several incidents, I realized something was off. I thought I might have a psychological problem. I went to see a doctor, and they said I had depression. I didn't believe it. I had two such adorable babies, how could I be depressed?"
"But after visiting several hospitals and seeing all the reports, I had to believe it."
"To prevent myself from hurting Freddy and Gilbert during an episode, I hired two nannies to watch the kids at all times. Later, with the help of doctors, I took medication and did a lot of rehabilitation training. My condition gradually stabilized."
After saying all this, Jessica was already crying uncontrollably.
She had always thought she had gotten through it, so she never dared to mention it to anyone.
However, when Gabriel brought up the idea of having a daughter, Jessica realized she hadn't conquered her depression.
She was still very scared.
She was afraid of postpartum syndrome, afraid of depression, and even more afraid of hurting the baby.
If she accidentally hurt the baby, she would never forgive herself.
Gabriel held Jessica tightly. "I'm sorry, honey. It's not your fault. Many moms experience depression after giving birth. The fault is mine. I wasn't there for you and didn't protect you well."
"Alright, we won't have another baby."
"You've already given me Freddy and Gilbert, and I'm very content."
After crying and talking about those things, Jessica felt much more relaxed.
In the end, Gabriel coaxed her to sleep.
Maybe she was exhausted from crying the previous day, so when they woke up in the morning, Jessica didn't notice.
No one was in the living room, so Gabriel must have taken them to the fitness room.
Just as breakfast was ready, Jessica went to call them to eat.
As she was about to enter, she heard Freddy's voice. "Dad, do you think Mom has our sister in her belly now?"
Gabriel walked over, picked up Freddy, and looked at Gilbert. "I'm sorry, I have to admit a mistake. Your mom will never have your sister in her belly. I can't fulfill that promise."
"Why?"
Upon realizing they had been deceived, Gilbert and Freddy's eyes turned red, looking both angry and aggrieved.
Gabriel patiently explained, "Because I just found out that your mom was very sick after giving birth to you. Although she has recovered, I don't want her to have another chance of getting sick."
"And your mom had a cut on her belly when she gave birth to you. There's still a scar there. It was very painful for her to give birth to you, and I don't want her to be in pain again."
"Baby girls are cute, but having a baby girl would make your mom very busy and very tired. So, let's not have a baby girl, okay?"
Gilbert and Freddy quickly nodded and seriously said, "Okay, Dad, we agree, no baby girl."
"Will you feel a little disappointed?" Gabriel pinched their cheeks and asked.
"A little bit, but Mom is the most important. If having a baby girl would make Mom suffer and be tired, then we don't want a baby girl. We just want Mom to be joyful."
