Chapter 306 We're Not Right for Each Other
As soon as she finished talking, Gabriel gently placed a finger on Jessica's lips.
He softly said, "If you don't want to talk, that's cool. If you do, let's wait until we're home and everything's settled, alright?"
"Alright." Jessica nodded.
Back at home, she was about to head to the bathroom for a shower, but Gabriel stopped her.
"Hang on," he said. "Sit on the couch for a bit. I'll call you when everything's ready."
"Okay."
She nodded and sat on the couch, watching him hustle around.
Five minutes later, Jessica went into the bathroom.
The steam was already rising, the bathwater was ready, and her clothes were neatly folded and set aside.
He really thought of everything.
The bathroom was warm and cozy.
Jessica stood under the showerhead, letting the hot water cascade over her, but she still felt a deep chill.
A wave of shivers ran through her.
She closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and let the water wash over her face.
Thinking of those moments, she grabbed the body wash and started scrubbing herself almost frantically, over and over again.
She lost track of time, not knowing how long she had been washing or how many times she had scrubbed, only feeling her skin getting sore.
But even then, she still didn't feel clean enough.
'Why did this have to happen to me?'
Tears, big and heavy, started falling, but Jessica was grateful for the showerhead.
This way, no matter how many tears she shed, they wouldn't be noticed.
She could even pretend her face was just wet from the water, not from crying.
But she didn't dare to cry out loud, just squatted down, hugging herself, and sobbed softly.
At this moment, she didn't even feel like she had the right to cry out loud.
She didn't want Gabriel to worry.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the bathroom door, and Gabriel's voice came through, "Jessica, are you done? Need anything else?"
Jessica immediately stopped crying, holding back her emotions, and tried to reply calmly, "I need a little more time, nothing for now. Don't worry. If I need anything, I'll call you."
"Okay, but don't stay in there too long. The bathroom's small, and staying too long can make you feel lightheaded."
"Okay." After answering, she felt completely drained.
She squatted back down, hugging herself tightly, licking her wounds in solitude.
Finally, Jessica turned off the shower and stepped into the bathtub.
Seeing the large tub of water, she didn't think twice and submerged her entire body into it.
Even her head, eyes, hair, and nose were underwater.
It seemed like this way, she could forget everything.
She didn't have to think about anything.
But without air, you can't live.
Coughing violently, Jessica lifted her head, her hair soaked, and her face flushed from the coughing.
But she seemed to find some strange comfort in it.
Once, twice, she repeated it over and over...
It seemed like this way, her body didn't feel as uncomfortable.
On the balcony, Gabriel stood alone, filled with sorrow and loneliness.
Ever since Jessica went into the bathroom, he hadn't stopped smoking.
One cigarette after another, he smoked heavily, not even keeping track of the cigarette butts piling up.
His brows were furrowed with worry and anxiety.
Jessica had been off all day, from the moment they met at the square to the car ride home. No matter how many questions he had, he held back.
He always believed she would tell him when she was ready.
But now that the moment had come, a sudden, inexplicable fear and dread rose in his heart.
For some reason, he decided that if possible, he would rather never know.
Throwing down the last cigarette butt, Gabriel got up and walked inside.
There was a third knock on the bathroom door.
"Jessica, are you done?" His voice was as gentle as ever.
Jessica immediately wiped her face vigorously, trying to reply in a calm tone, "I'm done, just a moment."
"Okay, I'll wait for you outside."
Turning off the shower and drying herself, Jessica quickly put on her pajamas.
Luckily, the pajamas weren't low-cut, so the bruises on her neck were well covered and didn't show.
As soon as she opened the bathroom door, she saw him.
"Do you feel better after the shower? Is your body warm now?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm warm," Jessica replied.
After that, they both fell into a heavy silence.
A terrifying quiet and suffocation engulfed them.
"Go to bed early. I've arranged for you to have tomorrow off," he said gently.
"Okay."
Jessica nodded, then walked out step by step.
But it felt like her steps were weighed down with lead, each one heavy and difficult.
"I'm going to sleep now, good night." At the door, she forced a smile.
"Good night." He waved.
But just as she was about to turn and leave, Jessica couldn't help but speak.
"Gabriel." She called his name, smiling brightly, "Didn't I say I would give you an answer this time? Although it's a bit late, it shouldn't be too late now."
"Yeah, it's not too late."
He nodded, his deep eyes filled with anticipation, looking at her so sincerely, so seriously, waiting for her answer.
Seeing him like this made Jessica's heart ache.
Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile and said, "Gabriel, I've thought about it for a long time. We're not right for each other. Even if we reconcile now, we'll argue and fight for the same reasons, and then break up again.
"Instead of ending up hurt and leaving in disgrace, it's better to let go. So, I'm sorry. I can't date you.
"I'm sorry, really sorry for disappointing you."
After speaking, Jessica bowed deeply to Gabriel.
As she bent down, tears flowed like a faucet from her eyes, and her heart ached with spasms.
Raising her head again, she forced her tears back and looked at Gabriel.
He stood there, lips tightly pressed, fists clenching, as if frozen.
But his eyes were fixed on her, and he said, "Jessica, say it again."
