Chapter 479 Something Happened
"You big meanie, you broke your promise. Didn't you agree to let me see you off?" Jessica was a bit upset.
Luckily, she had woken up just in time. If she hadn't, she would have missed seeing him off.
"Sorry," Gabriel looked at her sincerely. "The baby kept you up all night. You finally got some good sleep, how could I bear to wake you?"
"But you still shouldn't stop me from seeing you off."
The morning breeze was still chilly.
Gabriel opened his coat and immediately wrapped Jessica in his arms.
His coat was large and long, and after hugging Jessica, it reached down to her ankles.
Held tightly by him, and with the warmth of his body, Jessica felt especially comfortable and not cold at all.
"You have to promise me, once you get there, to take good care of yourself. Come back as soon as you're done."
"And you have to promise me, contact me every day. No disappearing or situations where I can't reach you."
Gabriel smiled and pinched Jessica's small earlobe. "Okay, I promise to all of it."
Seeing him smile, Jessica deliberately put on a stern face. "I'm not joking, I'm serious."
Although several years had passed and the memories had become distant.
Jessica still remembered everything he and Diana went through abroad at that time. She never wanted to experience that kind of anxiety again.
"Honey, you have to come back safe and sound. Don't forget, Gilbert, Freddy, and I are waiting for you."
Jessica looked down, stroking her still-flat belly. "And the baby in my belly, we're all waiting for you at home, so you mustn't get into any trouble."
"Alright, it's getting late, the weather outside is cold. You should go back, I need to leave too."
"Okay."
Jessica nodded. Suddenly, she reached out and hugged Gabriel's neck.
Then she pulled him towards her, stood on tiptoe, and kissed him with her slightly cold lips.
The kiss grew more intense.
She didn't want the usual brief peck, but she wanted a deep, lasting kiss to remember his taste.
Feeling her passion and initiative, Gabriel quickly turned from passive to active.
He held the back of Jessica's head with one hand, wishing he could merge her into his body.
If it weren't for her pregnancy making long trips unsuitable, he would have taken her with him long ago.
In the dim night, the two held each other, kissing passionately.
It wasn't until warm tears fell on Jessica's face that Gabriel stopped.
"Can't bear to see me go?" he asked, with a pained expression.
Jessica didn't speak, her tears continued to flow.
Seeing her cry, Gabriel instantly softened. "Jessica, don't cry. I promise I'll come back as soon as possible."
"Okay."
Jessica nodded, trying to calm herself down.
Through her blurry vision, Jessica watched Gabriel step toward the car. The wind seemed to pick up, blowing his coat around.
Soon, he got into the car.
Through the dim light, Jessica saw his lips move slightly, probably saying, "Honey, don't see me off, go back to sleep."
Jessica nodded and turned to walk back.
However, after the car left, she suddenly turned and ran after it.
It wasn't until the car completely disappeared that she looked away.
Her heart felt increasingly upset.
Was it because of her pregnancy that she was overthinking?
She didn't know if she was being overly sensitive, but ever since she knew he was going on a business trip to see Jack, she had been anxious and uneasy.
The morning wind was a bit cold. Jessica tightened her coat and walked back step by step.
Although she hadn't slept well all night, she couldn't fall asleep now.
Seeing that it was about time, she got up, had breakfast, and went to work at the hospital.
Even though she knew the flight would take over ten hours and she might not hear from him until late at night.
Jessica still checked her phone occasionally, even during meals.
"Jessica, what's wrong? You seem distracted." Tina waved her hand in front of Jessica.
"Gabriel left on a business trip this morning. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I can't stop worrying."
"Don't worry too much. He'll contact you as soon as he lands."
"Okay."
That night, Jessica waited until eleven.
Although it was very late, she couldn't sleep without receiving a message or call.
After another ten minutes, her phone suddenly rang.
It was a Facebook message from Gabriel: [Honey, I arrived safely. I thought it was late there and the kids were asleep, so I didn't video call you.]
[Good, I'm glad you arrived safely.] Jessica replied immediately, excited.
[Why are you still up so late? Were you waiting for my message?]
[I'm going to sleep now.] Jessica replied.
That night, she slept quite well.
In her dream, she saw Gabriel had returned safely and even saw what their baby would look like.
The baby was very soft, cute, and beautiful.
Because she slept well, Jessica felt refreshed and energetic in the morning.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she received a video message from Gabriel.
However, it was a pre-recorded video.
"Good morning, honey. It's noon here. After lunch, I'm heading to see Jack. If all goes well, I can catch a flight back this afternoon. Focus on your work and don't worry about me."
[Love you.]
Jessica felt sweet inside as she watched.
She smiled and replied, [I love you too.]
Since everything was going smoothly, Jessica felt relieved.
Maybe it was indeed her pregnancy making her overly anxious and sensitive.
However, Jessica never expected that just as she arrived at the hospital and changed into her uniform, her phone rang.
The call was from Jonah, which surprised her.
"Dad."
As soon as Jessica spoke, she heard Jonah's low, suppressed, hoarse voice. "Jessica, Danielle was in a car accident and was just brought to your hospital."
"I'm on my way. Go check on her quickly."
Jessica was shocked. For a moment, she couldn't process what she had just heard.
If she hadn't heard it herself, she wouldn't have believed that the usually calm and composed Jonah would speak to her in such a panicked, fearful, almost crying voice.
"Dad, don't worry. I'm going right now."
After hanging up, Jessica's legs began to tremble violently.
She almost fell to the ground.
Luckily, Tina caught her in time. "Jessica, why is your expression so pale?"
"Tina, my mother-in-law was in a car accident. My legs are weak right now. Can you help me upstairs?"
