Chapter 271 Sorry, I Didn't Mean That

Danielle gave a nod. "Yeah, Xavier said you wanted in, but you totally crushed it! You did it all by yourself."

"Mom, thanks for being real with me." Jessica was so touched she could barely speak.

She was lucky to have a grandpa who loved her so much.

Quickly turning away, Jessica wiped her tears like crazy.

Danielle knew she was crying but let her be. It wasn't until Jessica turned back around, eyes all red, that Danielle continued, "Xavier didn't tell you 'cause he didn't want you stressing. I've said it before, Xavier was the best. He was wonderful to Mom, to me as his daughter-in-law, and to you as his granddaughter-in-law. He loved every woman who married into the Walton family, showering us with love and support."

Jessica nodded like crazy. "I know, I won't let Grandpa down. I'll live a happy life."

"Mm," Danielle replied.

After parting with Danielle, Jessica immediately called Vincent. "Hey, Vincent, got some awesome news. Dr. Turner agreed to treat Mrs. Lucas."

Vincent got all excited. "For real?"

"Yep, totally. Send me all of Mrs. Lucas's medical records and test results, and I'll pass them on."

"Okay, I'll send them right now."

After getting the records, Jessica quickly forwarded them to Danielle.

In the hospital room, Vincent was still buzzing with excitement.

"Vincent, what's up? Haven't seen you this happy in ages," Madison asked first.

"Ennifer, Madison, there's hope for Mom's illness now. Jessica just called and said Dr. Turner agreed to treat her," Vincent replied.

Madison practically shouted with joy, "Really? Vincent, am I dreaming? You're not messing with me, right?"

Ennifer's eyes went wide, her face lit up. "Dr. Turner really agreed?"

"Yep, Jessica said to get all of Mom's records ready so she can send them over." Vincent confirmed with a nod.

The hospital room was suddenly filled with joy and hope.

Dr. Turner showed up at the hospital the next day. After checking things out, he scheduled surgery for the next morning.

Since he'd been retired for a while and hadn't been in the OR, he wouldn't be the main surgeon.

But he'd be there the whole time, guiding the surgery.

The surgery kicked off at nine in the morning. Jessica really wanted to check it out, but her department was slammed, and she couldn't find the time.

During lunch, Jessica quickly ran upstairs.

She didn't go in; just watched from a distance for a bit and didn't disturb them.

As she left, she shot Vincent a text: [Don't stress. The surgery's gonna be a success.]

Vincent: [Let me know when Mrs. Lucas is out.]

When Vincent got the Facebook message, he instinctively glanced down the hallway. Sure enough, he saw Jessica's back as she was turning to leave. He immediately started running to catch up with her.

He caught up with her at the elevator just as she was about to step in. He quickly called out, "Jessica!"

Hearing that familiar voice, Jessica stopped and turned around.

Seeing Vincent, she was a bit surprised. "What are you doing here? How's the surgery going?"

"We don't know yet. Mrs. Lucas went in at nine, and there's been no news so far," Vincent replied.

Jessica listened and let out a sigh of relief. "No news is good news for now."

'Cause if the surgery had gone south, they'd be calling for signatures on some critical condition notice or something.

"Jessica, I don't know how you pulled off getting Dr. Turner, but I gotta thank you personally today. Not just me, but the whole family's grateful," Vincent said sincerely.

"Don't sweat it. You've helped me out plenty of times. Remember those times you saved my butt?" Jessica said.

"That's different. Saving you was my job, my duty, and what I should do as a friend," Vincent said.

Jessica nodded. "You're right. So helping you is also what I should do as a friend. Mrs. Lucas is still in surgery. You should go be with her. She might come out soon."

"Okay, I'll catch you later," Vincent said.

"Mm, go ahead," Jessica responded.

At five in the afternoon, Jessica got a call from Vincent.

His voice was bursting with excitement. "Jessica, it's amazing! My mom's surgery was a success. Dr. Turner said it went really well."

"Really? That's awesome." Jessica clutched her phone, feeling a wave of relief.

That was great. She finally felt at ease.

The first thing Jessica thought of upon hearing the good news was to share it with someone.

Her fingers instinctively dialed Gabriel's number from memory.

"Hello," his deep, strong voice came from the other end.

"Gabriel, thank you. Mrs. Lucas's surgery was a success. I'm so happy," Jessica said.

Unexpectedly, a cold voice came from the other end, "You called to tell me that Vincent's mom was saved? So, Jessica, do you think I should be happy with you and celebrate? Or do you think I'd be cool with you being happy for another guy?"

His voice was so cold, almost devoid of any warmth.

Jessica's excited heart immediately sank. The happy expression on her face vanished.

Her smile faded, and she clutched her phone, biting her lip as she softly apologized, "I'm sorry, Gabriel. I didn't mean it that way. I called to tell you that as a doctor, seeing a patient's successful surgery makes me very happy. Also, Mrs. Lucas reminds me a lot of my mom. Her successful surgery brings me great comfort. I also wanted to personally tell you and express my gratitude. It wasn't what you thought."

After Jessica finished speaking, there was silence on the other end. So quiet that aside from breathing, there was almost no sound at all.

Ten seconds, twenty seconds...

Three minutes later, if it weren't for the call interface still being active, Jessica would have thought he had hung up.

"Sorry to bother you. If you don't want to hear what I have to say, I'll hang up now," Jessica said, lowering her eyelids.

However, just as she was about to hang up, a deep voice came from the phone, "Wait...!"
