Chapter 214 Reluctant to Let Go
Jessica didn't hesitate this time.
She reached out, hugged Gabriel, and kissed him. The people around them turned away, giving them privacy.
Before, Jessica would've been shy and embarrassed. But now, she didn't care about anything else.
She just wanted to love him, to feel his warmth, to be close to him.
In his arms, she felt soft and almost powerless.
Suddenly, her hand touched something sticky. She pulled back, eyes filled with worry. Jessica insisted, "You're still hurt. We need to get you to the hospital to remove the bullet."
"I don't want to go. I can't leave this moment," Gabriel said.
The wound hurt, but he was happy.
Gabriel remarked, "With my girlfriend being so proactive, it's even harder to let go."
Gabriel pressed his forehead against hers, breathing heavily.
Jessica blushed at his words, feeling shy again.
Jessica advised gently, "But you need to treat your wound first."
Gabriel asked, "Will I still get this kind of treatment after I'm healed?"
"Yes," Jessica said, looking down.
Then she leaned in, kissed him gently, and added, "There will be even better treatment."
Gabriel's eyes lit up in excitement.
He touched his arm and smiled bitterly. Gabriel remarked, "I really hope it heals soon."
At the hospital, Gabriel was taken in for surgery. Jessica waited outside.
Even though it was a minor surgery and the bullet hadn't hit any vital organs, she was still worried.
She was also worried about Vincent.
His injury was more serious due to an infection. The surgery needed to be extra careful, and recovery would be harder.
Since it was the same type of surgery, their operating rooms were close to each other.
When Gabriel's surgery light went off, Jessica ran forward.
"Dr. Martinez, how did it go?" she asked nervously.
Alexander Martinez nodded in reassurance. He replied, "It went well. Just a routine minor surgery, nothing to worry about."
Jessica said appreciatively, "Thank you, Dr. Martinez."
As soon as she finished speaking, Vincent's surgery light went off, and she ran over.
Hearing the doctor tell the other officers that the surgery went well, Jessica finally felt relieved. She still had to take care of Gabriel, so she spoke briefly with the officer looking after Vincent.
Jessica greeted, "Hi, I'm Jessica."
Brian greeted back, "Hi, I'm Brian Rodriguez."
Jessica handed two candies to Brian. She requested, "Please give these to Captain Lucas and tell him to take care of himself. I'll visit him when I can."
Brian replied, "Okay, thank you, Ms. Morgan."
"By the way, Ms. Morgan," Brian's gaze shifted to Gabriel and asked, "is he your boyfriend?"
Jessica proudly replied, "Yes."
Brian's eyes dimmed.
He had been excited.
Having been with Vincent for so long, he could tell that Captain Lucas liked Jessica.
Vincent had finally met a girl he was interested in, but she had a boyfriend.
Fate, it seemed, was beyond their control.
Brian assured her, "Alright, Ms. Morgan, I'll relay your message to Captain Lucas."
Jessica replied, "Thank you."
Jessica accompanied Gabriel to the ward.
After about an hour, the anesthesia wore off, and Gabriel woke up.
Jessica had just stepped out to get some hot water. When Gabriel didn't see her, he got gloomy.
Jessica hadn't expected that after staying by his side the whole time, he'd wake up the moment she left.
"Where did you go?" Gabriel asked as he grabbed her hand, looking upset.
Jessica stroked his hair and softly said, "I just went to get some hot water."
Gabriel said sadly, "I thought you left me."
Jessica was stunned.
She gently pinched Gabriel, and said, "Why do I feel like you're acting like a child now?"
Gabriel remarked, "Men are like children in front of the women they love. They like to act spoiled."
"Oh." Jessica smiled deeply, asking, "So, Mr. Walton, were you just acting spoiled with me?"
"Is that not allowed?" Gabriel said, adding, "Yes, I was acting spoiled to seek affection."
Jessica was silent.
After a moment, she touched her heart.
For a moment, it felt like something was gently squeezing her heart, making it soft.
Who could resist that?
After resting a bit more, by evening, Gabriel's spirits had improved a lot.
Thinking about Jessica's kidnapping, his mood immediately darkened.
At that moment, Frank came in.
"Have you found out?" Gabriel asked.
Frank nodded in confirmation, then reported, "Yes, we've got everything. The leader is named Mike Gonzalez, and Ms. Morgan was kidnapped by him."
Gabriel inquired, "Do we have a grudge against him?"
"No," Frank said truthfully, adding, "Ms. Morgan wasn't directly kidnapped by him, but by..."
Frank hesitated, glancing at Jessica.
"Let me explain!" Jessica said as she took over.
Frank immediately said, "Mr. Walton, I'll leave now."
Gabriel agreed, "Okay."
Although she didn't want to recall that day, Jessica forced herself to remember.
Jessica recalled, "A few days ago, when you were abroad, Carter suddenly came to me, asking for two hundred thousand dollars. I refused."
She added, "But he was very aggressive and unreasonable."
Thinking about her background, Jessica's mood became heavy, then revealed, "He said that I'm not actually his daughter, that my mother married him after getting pregnant with me, and that my biological father is someone else."
Jessica explained, "I was devastated and shocked. He used this to threaten me, saying that if I didn't give him the money, he would expose my illegitimate status and not let my mother rest in peace after her death."
She continued, "I had no choice but to try to gather the money. Grace was in an isolated training those days, and I couldn't reach her, so I called you."
Jessica hesitated, "But..."
Eventually, Jessica stopped speaking.
Because of the kidnapping, they had deliberately ignored some things. Because in the face of life and death, many things seemed so small and insignificant.
For example, why they had been cold to each other.
But now, as everything was brought up, both of them fell silent. The room's atmosphere suddenly became cold.
Jessica twisted her fingers, trying several times to speak, but each time she felt a stabbing pain in her heart, and the words got stuck in her throat.
Finally, Gabriel spoke, "But when you called, you heard another woman's voice on my end, so you didn't mention it, right?"
"Yes." Jessica nodded heavily.
"And now?" Gabriel's dark eyes questioned as he looked at her, "Do you want to ask me, to hear my explanation?"
