Chapter 162 First Day at Work

Jessica shook her head and said, "Nothing!"

She had already expressed certain sentiments before. She no longer had the courage to reiterate them.

"Since I'm the younger sister, I should fulfill my role as a sister. You too, should fulfill your role as a brother." After saying that, Jessica quickly closed the door and left.

Angered by him and chilled by the cold night air, she suddenly felt much more awake.

She had initially planned to return home, but upon opening the door to the pitch-black night, clad only in her pajamas and shivering from the cold, Jessica decided against it.

After hesitating for a moment, she turned around and went back, heading to the guest bedroom.

Maybe it was the alcohol, but as soon as she got under the covers, she quickly warmed up, and sleepiness soon overtook her.

The next day, Jessica's alarm clock went off early.

She didn't stay in bed; she got up as soon as she heard the alarm.

Fortunately, since she hadn't relocated all her clothes yet, Jessica had some extras to wear.

After washing up, she went downstairs and saw Gabriel already there, with breakfast prepared.

"Come over and eat," said Gabriel.

Although he was quite angry with her last night, he was still worried that she might have a headache or an upset stomach from drinking.

So he had gotten up early to make her breakfast.

Jessica glanced at the time, then at the sumptuous breakfast on the table, finding it hard to admit that she wasn't tempted.

But she also had her pride.

"No need, it's my first day reporting to work, and I'm about to be late," Jessica refused.

Seeing her heading out, Gabriel called out to her. "Are you sure you can get a cab? Sit down and have breakfast, and I'll drive you afterward."

Gabriel's words hit Jessica's problem directly.

It was indeed hard to get a cab here.

She could get one, but by the time it arrived, she would definitely be late.

"Are you sure you'll drive me to the hospital?" Jessica asked uncertainly.

"Do I look like I'm joking?" Gabriel countered.

She relented and started eating breakfast.

The breakfast was just the right temperature, especially the oatmeal, cooked to a thick consistency she enjoyed, warming her stomach.

After eating, Jessica sincerely thanked Gabriel.

Then, the two of them left together by car.

The trip took about half an hour and they arrived quickly. As Jessica exited the car, she tipped him the money.

"Thank you, but I don't want to owe you."

Gabriel looked at the 5 bucks that she had handed him, fuming.

Jessica had completely used him as a driver.

Once at the hospital, Jessica first went to the HR department to report, then went to find her mentor, Mrs. Hernandez.

The moment she saw Mrs. Hernandez, she felt especially warm and close.

Mrs. Hernandez, whose name was Kathleen, was a rare talent in cardiac surgery and an authority in the field. As a woman, becoming a professor of cardiac surgery at her age and standing out among male doctors was truly impressive.

So Jessica's admiration for Kathleen came from the bottom of her heart.

She remembered that during school, her lecturer had talked about some of Kathleen's cases. She was a medical fanatic who could go months without going home for research.

Jessica didn't understand at first, but after going home and looking up Kathleen's information on her computer, she was completely won over.

At that time, she had a small wish in her heart, hoping to one day become Kathleen's apprentice and work under her.

She never thought it would actually come true.

When Jessica entered Kathleen's office, she was scolding someone, her voice loud and her attitude stern.

It was a completely different Kathleen from the one she had seen when she and her classmates went to their lecturer's house for dinner.

So Jessica was a bit surprised.

She stood at the door, not wanting to interrupt, and waited until Kathleen was done before going in.

When she went in, Jessica felt a bit surreal, as if she were in a different world, and was dazed for a moment.

It was Kathleen who spoke first, "Scared?"

Jessica shook her head immediately and said, "No, I just don't know how to address you. Should I call you Mrs. Hernandez or Dr. Johnson like everyone else?"

Kathleen smiled kindly and shook her head, "Neither."

"Huh?" Jessica was instantly flustered.

"In the hospital, call me Dr. Johnson like everyone else. In life, you can call me Kathleen," said Kathleen.

"Okay, Dr. Johnson, I'm here to report today."

Kathleen nodded in satisfaction and then asked, "Did hearing me scold someone on your first day scare you?"

"No," Jessica immediately shook her head.

"Since you witnessed it, I'll tell you in advance. In life, I'll try to take care of you young people, but at work, I'm known for being strict and won't tolerate any sloppiness."

"Mistakes are allowed, but try not to make them; the same mistake repeatedly is absolutely not allowed. Also, your attitude towards medicine is very important."

"Take your time to understand these words," Kathleen said in advance to avoid misunderstanding.

After reporting to Kathleen, Jessica returned to the HR department.

The HR department had arranged an orientation for new employees, mainly to introduce the hospital and the rules and regulations to follow.

The morning flew by, and the training was fairly straightforward.

At lunchtime, Jessica had just lined up in the cafeteria when a cheer erupted.

Immediately, she saw everyone smiling at her.

Especially the young female doctors and nurses, each with a more radiant and gentle smile than the last.

Those smiles were so overwhelming that even Jessica couldn't handle it.

She was puzzled; such enthusiasm couldn't be for a newcomer like her.

So? What was it for?

Finally, after getting her food, Jessica found a random seat. Soon, Tina eagerly sat next to her.

Tina was a new colleague who joined at the same time and was in the same department. They were in training together.

After spending an entire morning together, they were already quite familiar.

"Jessica, did you see that just now?" Tina asked excitedly.

"See what?" Jessica asked, confused.

"Dr. Smith!" Tina said, so excited she hadn't even started eating.

Jessica replied, "Okay."

Tina reached for her cup, about to drink water, when suddenly a strikingly handsome man sat diagonally across from her, next to Jessica with one seat in between.

Tina was instantly stunned, her voice becoming stammered. "Dr. Smith, hello!"

Hearing this, Jessica turned her head and also greeted, "Dr. Smith."
