Chapter 279 Mourning Grandpa

Diana leaned in, "Jonah and Danielle are all about their image. If they see it with their own eyes, and everyone else does too, and then I drop the bomb that Jessica and Gabriel are splitsville, Gabriel's got no choice but to marry me, even if he hates it."

Sarah's jaw dropped. "Diana, you're spot on."

"And..." Diana's eyes went icy, "Don't forget the Bush family. At Xavier's memorial, the Bushes will be there for sure. If they see me and Gabriel back together, they'll back me up and push Gabriel to marry me. Those folks are the biggest opportunists. They'd jump at the chance to climb the social ladder."

"Diana, chill, I got your back. That night, I'll make sure Gabriel drinks the water, but how are you gonna get in?" Sarah asked.

"Xavier's memorial will be packed. The Walton family's security will be slack that day, and they won't expect me to be walking again. I can just stroll in, and no one will stop me."

"Alright, once Gabriel's out, I'll take him to the west side room to crash. You wait there."

"Got it." Diana nodded.

Thinking about the plan, Diana's face lit up with a wicked grin.

Perfect, just perfect!

Xavier never liked her, did everything to split her and Gabriel up, right?

She'd make sure to be with Gabriel that day, right at his memorial.

She wanted him to watch, to regret, and to die with his eyes wide open.

Thinking of this, she couldn't help but laugh out loud. Her face twisted with a sinister and terrifying expression.

Soon, that day would come, and her good days were just around the corner.

As for getting pregnant? She had plenty of tricks up her sleeve, no biggie.

The memorial for Xavier was on a Saturday, so Jessica didn't need to take time off.

She woke up at dawn, and just as she finished dressing, she got a call from Gabriel. "I'm waiting for you downstairs."

"Okay, be right down," Jessica replied.

Since it was a memorial, both of them wore long black clothes with a white flower pinned to their chests.

Their moods were heavy, and neither of them talked much, staying silent the whole time.

Just before getting out of the car, Gabriel pulled out a jewelry box and took out a jade bracelet, saying, "My folks still don't know about our split. Last time you didn't wear the bracelet, they got suspicious. And this bracelet was a gift from Grandpa himself. Since we're here to see him today, you should wear it."

This time, Jessica didn't argue. She took it and put it on without a second thought.

If Xavier could see her from up there, she knew he'd want her to wear this bracelet.

Just like the day Xavier kicked the bucket, the weather was absolute trash today.

As soon as Jessica and Gabriel stepped out of the car, a gust of wind smacked them in the face.

Gabriel grabbed Jessica's hand and said, "The wind's brutal, let's stick together."

"Alright," Jessica replied.

When they got there, her in-laws were already hanging around.

The four of them paid their respects to Xavier together.

"Dad, we're here to see you!"

"Grandpa, we're here to see you!"

Danielle chimed in, "Dad, you've been gone a while now, but I gotta fill you in on the family. Don't worry, we're all good. Jessica and Gabriel are still together, no divorce, no disappointments. As for the Walton family business, Gabriel and I are on it. We won't let it slip into the wrong hands."

Listening to this, Jessica felt a knot in her stomach. She knew she had let her grandfather down. She couldn't bring herself to tell him that she and Gabriel had been divorced.

She couldn't bear to tell him that she hadn't been able to protect his great-grandchild, that she couldn't bring him to see the little one today.

Thinking of the baby, Jessica's mood took a nosedive.

Since there were still guests at home, Danielle and Jonah took off first.

Jessica and Gabriel hung back a bit.

"I need to talk to Grandpa alone," Gabriel said.

"Sure." Jessica went to wait on the side.

As soon as she left, Gabriel dropped to his knees.

"Grandpa, it's your screw-up grandson Gabriel. I'm sorry for letting you down. Jessica's such a good girl, and I blew it. I hurt her and lost her. I didn't protect her and the baby, causing her so much pain. Grandpa, I get it now. Don't worry, I'll win her back. No one can take away the granddaughter-in-law you approved of."

After saying this, Gabriel got up and left.

Since the path out of the cemetery was long, he kept holding Jessica's hand.

At the cemetery entrance, Jessica spotted her in-laws not far ahead, and it looked like they were in a heated argument.

Danielle, fuming, glared at Jonah. With one hand pointed at him, she declared, "Jonah, forget it. If that woman shows up, I'm outta here. Besides, I just swore to Dad that I'd protect the Walton family business and not let anyone else get a piece."

Jessica immediately started to walk forward but was pulled back by Gabriel.

"Let them sort it out. My mom didn't argue in front of us because she didn't want us to worry. If we show up now, it'll just embarrass her."

"So we just ignore it?"

"Don't sweat it, my dad will cave eventually," Gabriel said.

For the first time, Jessica felt curious about her in-laws' relationship.

She didn't get why, despite everything, they never thought about splitting up.

"Want to know why?" Seeing Jessica's curiosity, Gabriel asked.
