Chapter 220 Witnessing Her Happiness with My Own Eyes
When they got to the second floor, Vincent had already forgotten that he was still holding Jessica's hand.
Jessica glanced down and reminded him, "Vincent?"
Vincent snapped out of it and quickly let go. He immediately apologized, "Sorry."
He released her hand, but the warmth lingered in his palm.
Her hand was so small and soft.
Softer than he had imagined.
"My mom probably said a lot downstairs. She might've misunderstood something. Don't take it too seriously," Vincent explained.
She asked, "Misunderstood what?"
Jessica was puzzled. She was just visiting; there shouldn't be anything to misunderstand.
Vincent coughed lightly, a bit embarrassed. He explained shyly, "She might've thought there's something between us, maybe even that you're my girlfriend."
Jessica was immediately surprised. She said in disbelief, "No way."
"Absolutely," Vincent said.
Jessica suggested, "Should I go explain to Mrs. Lucas? It'd be awkward if your real girlfriend comes over in the future."
"No need," Vincent said. "I don't have a girlfriend right now."
Jessica thought for a moment, then blinked her long eyelashes as she looked at Vincent. She remarked, "You're so outstanding; there must be many girls chasing after you. When you do have a girlfriend, don't forget to invite me for coffee."
"Sure," Vincent agreed and nodded.
He looked at Jessica with a complicated expression.
At that moment, he didn't know whether to feel happy or sad.
Happy that he hid his feelings well, and she never noticed a thing.
Or sad that she didn't notice he had a crush on her.
"Jessica?" Vincent called her name, feeling a pang in his heart.
Jessica answered, "Yes?"
Vincent inquired, "How are things between you and Gabriel now? Last time was too rushed, and I forgot to check on you guys. It seems like he also got seriously injured. How is his recovery going?"
"Gabriel is recovering well," Jessica said, smiling gently at Vincent. "And Gabriel and I have reconciled."
"Really?" Vincent replied, surprised.
Jessica reminisced fondly, "Yes, we have. We've resolved all our issues and confessed our feelings to each other. This time, when I was kidnapped, Gabriel came back from abroad specifically to save me. He spent a lot of money and even took a bullet for me."
She said confidently, "So, I'm very sure now that he loves me."
She revealed happily, "Vincent, I'm very happy and content now. I also told him my secret, that he's the one I've loved for ten years. He was so happy, like a child."
Jessica's smile was constant.
That kind of smile, gentle and faint, gave a special sense of peace and stability.
Vincent knew that this smile was genuine happiness.
It was the kind of joy that only a truly happy person could express from the heart.
Vincent commended, "That's great."He nodded, feeling even more complicated inside.
After leaving her, in the middle of the night, when he thought of her, he had regretted it.
He even wondered if he had stayed with her, would he have had a chance.
But now, he suddenly felt relieved.
As long as she was happy, that was the best outcome.
Her happiness was his joy.
Changing the subject, Jessica asked, "Why are we talking about me? I came to see you, Vincent. How's your wound healing? Does it still hurt?"
Vincent reassured her, "Don't forget my profession. This kind of injury is nothing to me. I'm healing well."
Jessica remarked, "That's good."
Jessica continued, "Seeing you like this, reassures me that your recovery is going quite well, so I feel much relieved. By the way, how did you end up there that day?"
Vincent explained, "Mike, the kidnapper, is a key suspect we've been tracking for a long time in a complex case, making him a crucial point of investigation."
He added, "Later, we got intel that he had kidnapped someone to extort money from the top of the mountain. We moved in, but our actions were sloppy and it jeopardized the attempt to arrest them. Not only did we fail to help you, but we also put you in more danger."
"Vincent, it's not your fault. Besides, how could I blame you? Nothing's ever foolproof. It was just an accident," Jessica reassured him.
Vincent said honestly, "Luckily, you're okay. Otherwise, I'd be feeling guilty."
"Now you can relax. I'm really fine. Look at me, I'm like a lively little rabbit, perfectly fine," Jessica assured him while she moved her legs and arms to show him that she was okay.
They chatted for a bit longer until Jessica got a call from Gabriel.
Jessica greeted sweetly, "Hello, Gabriel."
Gabriel asked softly, "Are you done visiting?"
"Yeah, almost," Jessica replied.
Gabriel said, "Okay, come out. I'm waiting for you at the hospital entrance."
"You're at the hospital?" Jessica remarked and was surprised. "But Vincent's been discharged. I'm at his house now."
Gabriel suggested, "Alright, wait there. I'll be right over."
With that, Gabriel hung up.
At the same time, he urged Oscar, "Drive faster, get there quickly."
He had been on his way home but felt uneasy about his wife visiting Vincent, who had a crush on her. So, he decided to wait at the hospital instead of going home.
He would only feel at ease once his wife was out.
If it were anyone else, it wouldn't matter, but it was Vincent.
Vincent, from the Lucas Family, was someone he genuinely admired for his excellence.
So, he had to be extra cautious.
Jessica hung up the phone and looked at Vincent. She mentioned, "Since you're recovering well, I'm relieved. I'll head home now. By the way, Mrs. Lucas mentioned wanting me to stay for lunch. She might already be preparing the meal."
Vincent assured her, "No worries, I'll handle my mother."
Jessica said appreciatively, "Thank you, Vincent."
They went downstairs together.
As soon as they saw them, Alexis said, "Jessica, come, sit with me. I've already asked someone to..."
Before she could finish, Vincent interrupted, "Mom, Jessica has something to do. She won't be staying for lunch. I'll have lunch with you."
"But just now..." Alexis's smile faded a bit mid-sentence, and she looked a little disappointed.
Vincent walked over and whispered something to her, which seemed to ease her mood. She smiled again, and said, "Alright, next time then. Next time, I'll make sure to have you stay over for a meal."
Jessica replied politely, "Sure, Mrs. Lucas. Next time, I'll definitely join you for a meal."
Satisfied, Alexis said, "Good."
As Vincent walked Jessica out, Alexis sighed reluctantly.
Ennifer had already seen through her mother's thoughts. She peeled a grape and asked nonchalantly, "Mom, do you like Jessica?"
"Yes," Alexis said.
She seemed to have a realization, her gaze suddenly becoming distant.
Alexis remarked helplessly, "Ennifer, I don't know if it's because I'm getting old or what. The first sight of Jessica, I thought she was quiet and graceful, so I liked her."
Alexis added, "But the more I think about it, the more she resembles someone, it's really uncanny. I'm not sure if it's my failing eyesight or if my memory is playing tricks on me."
"Mom, you probably haven't met her before," Ennifer said.
Alexis suggested, "Yes, this is the first time. Maybe I'm mistaken. Ennifer, go see her off."
Ennifer instructed, "Madison, take care of Mom. I'll go see Jessica off."
Madison replied obediently, "Alright, Ennifer, go ahead. I'll stay with Mom."
Ennifer, in her high heels, stepped outside and immediately saw a familiar luxury car.
It was identical to her own, except for the license plate. There were only two such cars in the entire city.
So, she recognized it instantly.
