Chapter 138 Danielle Found Out They Were Getting Divorced
"Jonah, Danielle, why are you back so suddenly?" Jessica asked, feeling a bit flustered.
"We have a little something going on, so we came back for lunch. How did you and Gabriel come back without letting us know? If we had known earlier, we would have asked the maid to prepare some dishes you both enjoy," Danielle asked.
Jessica smiled. "Danielle, no need to bother. It was a last-minute decision for us as well. Nothing major; we'll be leaving soon and won't have lunch at home."
"Having lunch won't take too long. Just wait a moment. I'll ask the servant to prepare a few more dishes." Danielle said, heading toward the kitchen.
Jessica immediately said, "Danielle, , it's not necessary. Gabriel and I have some things we need to take care of."
With that, Jessica tugged on Gabriel's hand.
Gabriel knew she was asking for help.
Normally, he would be more than happy to help, but this time, he selfishly thought that if Danielle knew about their impending divorce, maybe she could help him keep Jessica.
Maybe they wouldn't have to get divorced after all.
"What important thing can't wait an hour?" Danielle asked.
Jessica was never good at lying, so she looked up and smiled brightly, trying to hide her inner turmoil with her smile.
"Danielle, the place closes at noon. Gabriel and I wanted to get there in the morning."
Danielle sighed, her mood dropping. "If that's the case, then go ahead. I won't keep you."
Jessica stepped forward, linking arms with Gabriel. As they turned to leave, Jonah suddenly called out, "Jessica."
As soon as he spoke, Danielle immediately grabbed his hand, giving him a stern look.
"Jonah, what's up?" Jessica turned around.
"Nothing." Jonah waved his hand, his strong voice suddenly sounding old, "I just wanted to say, come back and have meals with us more often when you have time."
"Okay," Jessica replied reluctantly.
After speaking, her heart was filled with bitterness.
Sorry, this time, she lied.
After the divorce, she would rarely come back here. She probably won't come back unless she missed Xavier.
Watching their figures fade into the distance until they were out of sight, Danielle immediately turned around, covering her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes.
"If you guessed it, why didn't you let me try to save it?" Jonah helped her to the sofa.
Danielle wiped her tears, choking up as she spoke. "Didn't you see Jessica's attitude and expression? She's determined to get a divorce. Do you think a few words from you could change her mind?"
As a woman, she understood that kind of resoluteness and hopelessness all too well.
Danielle continued, "Besides, if anyone should try to save it, it should be Gabriel. Maybe it's for the best. Let Gabriel suffer a bit. Just looking at him makes me angry. I wish I could knock some sense into him. Who told him not to cherish his wife and mess around with other women?"
Danielle was initially very sad, but thinking about Gabriel's usual behavior made her anger replace her sadness.
In the end, Danielle became more and more furious.
Jonah could only try to calm her down.
After a long time, Danielle's emotions finally settled a bit.
Jonah still frowned, unable to relax. "I'm just afraid that after the divorce, they'll never have another chance."
This also struck a chord with Danielle.
She remained silent for a while before speaking calmly. "It depends on his ability. If he knows how to repent and cherish, he will find a way to win Jessica back. If he really misses the chance, he can only blame himself."
With a heavy sigh, Danielle lost her appetite and went upstairs alone.
She said that, but in reality, she couldn't bear to see them divorce.
Jessica was not only the granddaughter-in-law that Xavier had carefully chosen. Before Xavier passed away, he repeatedly urged them not to let the two get divorced.
Now that they were really going to divorce, how could she face Xavier?
Moreover, it wasn't easy for Jessica and Gabriel to become a couple. If Gabriel got divorced, he would lose a good life partner, and she wouldn't be happy as his mother.
But Danielle also knew clearly that Jessica had made up her mind. Her eyes and words were so determined, leaving no room for retreat.
What could they change even if they tried to persuade her?
It wouldn't change anything, and it would only make Jessica distance herself from them.
That's why she pretended not to know.
Picking up her phone, Danielle immediately called her secretary, asking her to use a company matter as an excuse to get Gabriel back to the office quickly.
Danielle thought, 'Gabriel, this is the last thing I can do for you. I hope you learn to cherish from now on.'
After hanging up, Danielle took a small white pill from the medicine box, swallowed it with warm water, and then lay down for a nap.
Leaving the Ancestral villa, Jessica checked the time on her phone and then looked at Gabriel. "The court closes in an hour. It takes half an hour to get there from here, so we should have enough time. Let's go!"
With that, Jessica walked ahead alone.
Gabriel watched her back, feeling a mix of sadness and bitterness.
"Jessica," he suddenly called out to her back.
"What's wrong?" Jessica turned around, facing the bright sunlight. Her face looked soft as she gazed at him. Her whole body was bathed in golden sunlight, exuding warmth and beauty that was captivating and impossible to look away from.
So, even after many years, Gabriel would still clearly remember her gentleness and beauty at this moment.
"I'm Sorry, but there's an urgent matter at the company. I might not be able to go to court with you," Gabriel said.
For the first time in his life, he told such a big lie.
And it was a lie full of holes, completely unconvincing.
"Do you really have to go back to the company now? Can't it wait an hour?" Jessica asked.
Gabriel looked at her apologetically. "Yes, it's very urgent. I have to go back right now."
Jessica looked down, considering for a moment, then looked up and asked, "How long will it take? Can you finish by 4 PM?" she asked again.
If he could finish by 4 PM, they could still make it to the court by 5 PM to divorce.
Since it was a lie, Gabriel didn't think much and said casually, "Maybe, I'm not sure."
Jessica nodded. "Okay, then you go. The company's matters are important. I'll wait for you."
Gabriel said softly, "It might be very late. Are you sure you want to wait for me? I can have someone take you back first."
"It's okay. I don't have anything else to do. You go handle the company's matters, and I'll wait for you there," Jessica affirmed.
