Chapter 64 Jessica, I'm Sorry
Gabriel rubbed his temples; he felt particularly confused right now. Especially seeing her crying, he felt an indescribable discomfort. But soon, he forced himself to forget that feeling.
When he looked at Jessica again, his gaze became piercing, and his voice came out coldly, "Today was my fault, but Diana wouldn't call me for no reason, especially not this late; she must have something important."
"Jessica, I'm sorry, but I have to answer this call." Jessica smiled. It turned out that every time she insisted, it was to prove that her persistence meant nothing. She blinked, suddenly feeling that the man in front of her was a stranger.
"Gabriel, this call is something you must answer, right?" Her voice suddenly became calm, with no trace of the previous hysteria, nor the sharpness and confrontation from earlier. After glancing at her, Gabriel finally uttered one word, "Yes."
Alright, the expected answer. For some reason, hearing this word made Jessica even calmer. She reached out and took out the phone hidden behind her back. Then, holding it in both hands, she respectfully handed it to Gabriel. Watching her do this, Gabriel felt extremely uncomfortable.
He held her hand and comforted her gently, "Jessica, don't be like this. I’m just answeringed a phone call."
"Is that so?" Jessica replied calmly, without saying another word.
She lowered her gaze, wrapped herself in the blanket, and then reached out to turn off the lights in the room, leaving only a dim yellow bedside lamp emitting a faint light to prevent the room from being too dark.
Two minutes later, Gabriel called back.
Jessica was almost entirely hidden under the covers, with only a small head peeking out.
He hesitated for a moment and looked at her before speaking, "Diana's car broke down on the hill. I'm going to pick her up and will be back soon."
Jessica blinked her eyes but didn't say anything.
Gabriel leaned over the bed, his slender fingers pushing aside her bangs, and then lowered his head to kiss her forehead.
As if sensing it, Jessica immediately turned her head and quickly avoided it.
Gabriel's hand awkwardly froze in mid-air.
He withdrew his hand and whispered, "I'll be gone for a while, but I'll definitely be back tonight."
He then changed his clothes, opened the door, and prepared to leave.
Suddenly, Jessica's voice came from the darkness, "Gabriel, you made such a good promise. Have you ever thought about how embarrassing it would be if you couldn't didn’t come back tonight?"
"I will definitely come back tonight," Gabriel said firmly.
"Is that so?" Jessica laughed.
"But your promises are worthless to me now, they all sound like poor lies."
She had been naive and foolish, believing his words, but what did she get in return? Not gratitude and guilt from him, but deception time and time again.
"Jessica," Gabriel called her name, and from the tone of his voice, it was clear that he was angry.
"Do I have to recount your promises to you one by one?"
Jessica painfully recalled the lies that had left her battered and bruised.
"That night, you received a phone call, and when I asked what it was about, you said it was nothing. But as soon as I fell asleep, you got up and left, not returning for the whole night. Gabriel, you thought I didn't know, but I knew everything. I didn't say anything, I just didn't feel like exposing you."
"And now, you said it was just to answer a phone call, but within five minutes, it turned into going out to pick her up."
"You say you'll come back tonight? Do you think I'll believe you?"
Jessica's voice was so calm.
The calmness made her even feel like she was not the one involved in these matters.
"Gabriel, I may be a bit slow, not belonging to those exceptionally intelligent people. But I'm just a little slow, not dumb."
"How ruthless must your heart be to repeatedly hurt me like this?"
"Just leavego!"
When Jessica said these three words, she suddenly felt relieved.
Gabriel suddenly turned around and pounced on the bed, tightly embracing Jessica: "I'm sorry, Jessica, I didn't know I had hurt you so much with my actions."
"I promise, I will definitely come back tonight, rain or shine."
After saying that, Gabriel left.
The room suddenly became empty.
Jessica wrapped herself tightly in the blanket and closed her eyes.
Soon, sleepiness came, and thatis night, she found that it wasn't so difficult to sleep without Gabriel by her side. Actually, she could fall asleep on her own too.
It's just that she couldn't let go of her thoughts before, always subconsciously telling herself that Gabriel needed to be with her, sleeping next to her, in order for her to fall asleep.
But in reality, habits can be changed.
One day, all the habits regarding Gabriel will definitely be completely abandoned.
She woke up in the morning, the room was empty with only herself.
Jessica just glanced at the empty spot next to her lightly, maybe she had never held any hope, so she wasn't disappointed either.
However, when she was folding the blanket, Jessica discovered that the other side of the bed was unexpectedly warm.
She reached out and touched the spot next to her, and it was also warm.
Could he have come back?
But she didn't care anymore.
In the dining room, there was a beautifully set table for breakfast.
Because they were all small portions, there was a wide variety.
Pasta, sandwiches, buttered bread, coffee.
Almost everything was her favorite.
When Jessica saw Gabriel coming out of the kitchen wearing a dark gray apron, she was surprised.
She thought they had ordered takeout, but it turned out that he had made everything himself.
Taking off the apron, Gabriel brought Jessica's favorite items in front of her.
"Thank you!" Jessica said gently.
Upon hearing those words, Gabriel was momentarily stunned.
She was thanking him.
Throughout the entire breakfast, no one spoke again, and the dining room was filled with silence.
Finally, breakfast was over, and just as Jessica was about to get up, Gabriel looked at her and spoke, "Oscar Murdock said you have an interview today. I'll wait outside for you."
"No need to wait for me."
Without hesitation, Jessica directly refused.
"Wasn't the interview at Central Hospital? I can drop you off on the way," Gabriel said.
"Yeah, it's there, but the written test is in the afternoon, so I'll go by myself," Jessica replied.
"Alright, you go by yourself."
After saying that, Gabriel walked off by himself.
Sitting in the car, he immediately called Oscar. Murdock: "What time is Jessica's interview?"
"It's at 9 in the morning!"
"Are you sure it's 9 in the morning?" Gabriel's voice suddenly turned cold.
"Of course, I'’m sure, Jessica and I agreed that she would take the 8 o'’clock car."”
He hadn'’t guessed wrong.
Jessica had indeed lied to him.
Did she dislike him so much? Dislike him to the point where she wouldn'’t even want to ride in the same car as him?
