Chapter 210 Thrilling Rescue 2
As they made their way down the mountain, Gabriel held Jessica's hand.
Her hand was small and soft, and he felt a comforting tenderness holding it.
Watching them leave, someone stepped forward, and asked, "Mr. Gonzalez, are you really letting them go?"
Mike replied, "Yeah."
Mike's face was cold as he spat out the word.
Another person stepped forward, and questioned, "Mr. Gonzalez, will Mr. Walton really give us the remaining four million?"
"I don't know," Mike replied.
Someone chimed in, "Mr. Gonzalez, what should we do then? Just give the order, and we'll go capture them right away."
Mike turned and slapped the person hard on the head, and said, "It's too late now, idiot."
Mike reminded sternly, "Didn't you hear what he said? If we don't release his wife, he'll have us all killed."
"Mr. Gonzalez, why are you afraid of them? We've already got a huge sum of money, at worst..." the underling said as he made a throat-slitting gesture.
Mike slapped him hard again, saying, "All you think about is killing? Once we kill someone, I'll become a nationally wanted criminal, living worse than a rat. Even if we don't get that four million dollars, six million is enough."
Mike warned, "Besides, the boss gave strict orders recently not to cause trouble. If it weren't for my gambling debts, I wouldn't have resorted to this. Everyone listen up, if anyone dares to let the boss know about today's events, I'll kill them."
The underlings replied, "Yes, Mr. Gonzalez."
Just then, they received a text message.
It was from Gabriel, with the location of the hidden money.
When they dug it up, there was indeed two million.
Ten minutes later, Gabriel and Jessica had already covered a quarter of the distance, and Mike had received two million dollars.
Looking back, there was indeed no one following them.
Jessica finally breathed a sigh of relief, and asked, "Gabriel, are we safe now?"
"Not yet, we need another ten minutes," Gabriel said.
Jessica questioned, worried, "How do you know they'll definitely let us go?"
Gabriel explained patiently, "Between a guaranteed large sum of money and certain death, no one would choose the latter. That's human nature. Besides, I had Oscar investigate this guy; he has a complicated background but one thing is clear, he values his life."
Gabriel added, "So, I'm betting he wants to live."
Jessica asked, "What if he really fired the gun?"
The thought of the gun pointed at their heads terrified Jessica.
Gabriel held Jessica tightly, his rapid breathing audible in her ear, and confessed, "Jessica, I'm not afraid of dying, I'm afraid of you dying."
Gabriel assured her, "But I won't let you die."
Jessica caressed his face and replied, "Idiot, but I'm also afraid of you dying!"
Gabriel said confidently, "Alright, alright, Jessica. Look, I'm here in front of you, alive."
"Mm!" Jessica nodded vigorously in agreement.
They gazed deeply into each other's eyes. Gabriel kissed Jessica's hand and then continued to lead her down the mountain.
Just then, shouts came from behind.
Mike commanded, "Catch them, quickly catch them."
He insisted frantically, "We must catch them."
"You dared to call the cops, I'm gonna kill you," this was Mike's furious voice threatening.
"Did you call the cops?" Jessica asked.
Gabriel quickly replied, "No time to explain."
Gabriel grabbed Jessica's hand and started running down the mountain.
Gabriel advised, "Jessica, hold on tight, we need to get down quickly."
Jessica agreed, "Okay."
Jessica nodded in acknowledgment and kept pace without hesitation.
But their pursuers knew the terrain well and were used to running in the mountains. The downhill path was like flat ground to them.
Soon, the group was closing in.
Mike's eyes were bloodshot, and ordered, "Shoot, just shoot."
The forest echoed with gunfire.
Jessica was terrified, holding Gabriel's hand with one hand and covering her head with the other, running as fast as she could.
Suddenly, a bullet whizzed past her ear.
She immediately hugged her head, trembling all over.
Gabriel quickly shielded her, half-carrying her as they ran downhill.
The pursuers were closing in, running frantically.
After a few minutes, Gabriel suddenly stopped, pulling Jessica to a halt.
He looked ahead and saw a steep cliff.
Though not a bottomless abyss, the cliff was almost vertical, jagged with rocks, and terrifying to look at.
The bottom of the cliff was out of sight.
The voices behind them grew closer, saying, "There's a cliff ahead, they have nowhere to run, quick, catch them alive."
Gabriel yelled, "Jessica, come here!"
Jessica walked over and stood beside him.
"Are you scared?" he asked her gently.
"I was very scared," Jessica said, then smiled, "But with you here, I'm not scared at all."
Gabriel advised, "Good, hold me tight."
Jessica hummed in agreement, "Mm."
Jessica reached out and hugged Gabriel tightly. He also wrapped his arms around her, protecting her head.
Mike remarked, "They can't run anymore, catch them."
Just as the group was about to catch them, Gabriel suddenly jumped off the cliff with Jessica in his arms.
They rolled down the steep rock face.
Mike ran forward frantically, shooting at them as they rolled down.
Mike ordered, "Shoot them."
At his command, everyone started shooting wildly at Jessica and Gabriel.
Suddenly, Gabriel's pupils dilated as he saw a bullet flying towards Jessica.
Without thinking, he pulled her tightly into his arms.
The bullet hit Gabriel's arm without any deviation.
He frowned, stifling a groan.
Jessica asked worriedly, "Gabriel, are you okay?"
"My finger just got bent a bit, it's fine now," Gabriel shook his head, and assured her, "Don't worry."
The gunfire above was relentless, raining down on them.
Jessica didn't dare stop or think.
As the dense gunfire echoed in her ears, Jessica's emotions broke down.
She clung tightly to Gabriel, asking, "Gabriel, are we going to die?"
"No," Gabriel said firmly.
Because he wouldn't let her die.
Just as the gunfire was at its peak, a group of police officers suddenly rushed in.
Instantly, the gunfire intensified.
It lasted for about ten minutes.
Suddenly, the forest became quiet.
After a while, Jessica peeked out from Gabriel's embrace and asked softly, "Are we safe now?"
To her surprise, Gabriel shook his head, replying, "Our people haven't arrived yet."
Jessica was puzzled, and asked, "Didn't you call the cops to come and save us?"
