Chapter 307 I'm Sorry, Gabriel

Jessica couldn't bring herself to look at him; it felt like her heart was being shredded.

She knew she had messed up.

Seeing her all quiet and head down, Gabriel got even more pissed. He grabbed her shoulder and barked, "Jessica, look at me."

He was seriously mad, his voice cold as ice.

Jessica kept her head down. She couldn't look up, didn't want him to see her tear-streaked face and messy hair.

Gabriel, even angrier now, said, "Jessica, I'm not asking again. Look at me."

This time, Jessica had no choice. She fought back her tears and looked up.

Seeing her red, teary eyes, Gabriel's anger melted a bit, replaced by pain.

"Tell me, why do you think we can't be together? Why do you want to break up?" His voice was softer now, though still hurt.

"Was everything fake? I never pushed you because you asked for time, and I gave it to you. You said you wanted to take it slow, so I did.

"But I thought you were just waiting for the right moment to say yes.

"Do you know why I didn't come to pick you up today?"

Jessica's voice shook as she asked, "Why?"

Gabriel replied, "Because I was waiting, hoping. I bet that if I didn't come today, you'd call me. Jessica, do you know how happy I was when you called?

"I was thrilled. I couldn't focus on work all day, just waiting to see you tonight.

"But now, you're telling me it was all fake. You don't want me? Jessica, it hurts so much.

"Tell me why. I know you didn't feel this way before. Why now?"

Gabriel's face was full of pain.

The hurt on his face was so clear, so deep, like a knife to her heart.

If she could, she wouldn't want him to suffer. She wished he could be a bit happier.

"I'm sorry."

That's all Jessica could say.

But Gabriel wasn't having it.

"Don't say sorry. I don't want to hear it. Tell me the real reason." He was trying hard to keep it together.

Jessica said, "I'm really sorry. I just don't want to be with you anymore. I already said, getting divorced and remarried is tough. I don't want to go through that again. That's the reason."

"No." Gabriel shook his head, "That's just an excuse. I want the real reason. Jessica, tell me. We'll figure it out together, okay? We've come so far. We can't just end it like this."

Gabriel reached out and held her hand tight.

His voice was still gentle.

Jessica's heart hurt even more.

She shouted, "What I'm saying is the real reason. There's no other reason. Why don't you believe me?"

Gabriel said, "Because it's a lousy excuse, of course, I don't believe it."

Jessica looked at him, her face full of sorrow, and asked, "Gabriel, do you really need to know the reason?"

"Yes." He nodded firmly, "I need to know the real reason."

Jessica didn't say anything, just looked out the window.

Outside, it was pitch black and dead quiet.

There weren't even any stars, just a pitch-black sky.

Taking a deep breath, she looked at Gabriel and asked again, "Do you really want to know?"

"Yes."

"Alright, I'll tell you."

With trembling fingers, she slowly unbuttoned her nightgown, revealing a prominent bruise on her neck.

"Who did this? What happened?" Gabriel rushed over, his voice filled with worry.

Jessica rolled up her sleeves, showing more bruises.

He grabbed her arm, "What happened? Tell me."

Jessica closed her eyes, tears streaming down, "Fine, I'll tell you. The scars on my forehead, the bruises on my neck and arms, my tardiness... I was kidnapped at night, and..."

She couldn't continue. The memories were too painful.

But he needed to know.

"And, I was..." Jessica choked, "I'm sorry, Gabriel. I was raped. I let you down!"

With that, she ran back to her room, crying.

Gabriel was left alone in the living room, fists clenched, veins bulging on his forehead.

He was filled with a terrifying, cold rage.

He was on the verge of losing it. If he didn't control himself, he would have gone out to find the man responsible.

He had suspected something was wrong ever since he saw her in the square. Maybe she had been punished or caught up in a medical dispute.

But he never imagined this.

Now, he was both furious and heartbroken.

If he felt this bad, how much worse must Jessica feel?

After a while, he calmed down and walked to Jessica's room.

"Jessica." He knocked softly.

Jessica leaned against the door, sliding to the floor, hugging herself and sobbing.

Hearing his voice, she covered her mouth, trying not to make a sound.

Gabriel asked, "Jessica, can you open the door? I want to talk to you face to face."

Jessica took a deep breath, trying to calm down, "I'm sorry. I want to be alone for a while."

Gabriel didn't want to push her, so he agreed.

"Okay," he said, "But I need to say a few things.

"Jessica, I will make sure whoever did this pays. No matter who it is, they will be punished.

"I know you're hurting. When you're ready, we'll talk. Rest well tonight."

Jessica heard him leave.

She cried even harder, but silently, biting her lip.

She knew he would mind.

She had hoped, naively, that he wouldn't, but it turned out to be wishful thinking.
