Chapter 723 Breaking the Engagement 2
"Hello, Jessica!"
Grace answered the phone, groggy from sleep.
"You're still sleeping? Get up and watch the news."
"What news?"
"Get up and see for yourself. I'm not telling you first."
As soon as she hung up, Linda's call came through seamlessly.
"Grace, hurry and watch the news. Congratulations, you finally got a good result."
"This time, Mr. Taft deserves high praise. His action is simply amazing."
Early in the morning, Jessica and Linda were more excited than she was.
And with Linda's enthusiastic praise of Quentin, Grace thought it was related to Marlon.
But Grace didn't expect that when she saw the top trending topic, she would be completely shocked.
She couldn't believe her eyes. She stared at the words, reading them over and over again, carefully, before daring to read the news out loud, word by word.
#BreakingNews Quentin announced the cancellation of his engagement with Caroline.
#BreakingNews The president of the Taft Group is now single.
#EngagementNews Announced: Quentin and Caroline have suddenly called off their engagement.
Grace held her phone, her fingers trembling.
In her immense shock, Grace hadn't yet recovered.
Outside, a loud voice called out, "Grace, come out here."
"I'll be right out," Grace replied.
There was no mistaking that voice; it was Quentin's mother, Ruby.
"Mrs. Taft, Mr. Taft has instructed that you cannot go in," the maid outside was desperately trying to stop her.
"Get out of my way. I'm going in today, and I want to see who dares to stop me."
"Mrs. Taft, please calm down. Mr. Taft will be angry."
Ruby didn't care. She forcefully ordered the people she brought with her, "Break down the door."
Grace knew Ruby wouldn't give up easily, and she had seen Ruby's fierceness.
So she immediately got up to change out of her pajamas.
Unexpectedly, just as Grace got out of bed, the door was smashed open.
Ruby stormed in furiously.
When she saw Grace lying in bed, Ruby couldn't hold back any longer and rushed over.
Without a moment's hesitation, she slapped Grace. "Grace, how shameless can you be?"
Fortunately, Grace reacted quickly and caught Ruby's hand.
"Mrs. Taft, please have some self-respect. What right do you have to hit me? This is illegal entry; I can call the police right now."
Ruby sneered, "Go ahead, call the police. Better yet, broadcast it live online. I want to see when everyone knows you ruined Quentin's engagement with Caroline, that you couldn't stand being lonely and became the mistress, if they will forgive you. How will you return to the entertainment industry then?"
Grace had always been proud.
But the term of mistress always hit her hardest.
Ruby knew exactly how to hurt her.
"What? Afraid now?"
"Grace, didn't I warn you? No matter what, my principle is that Quentin absolutely cannot marry you. His wife can only be Caroline, must be her."
"But now he's canceled the engagement for you."
These were words Grace had anticipated.
But since Grace chose to be with him, she wouldn't back down.
Seeing Grace's calm demeanor, Ruby became even more furious.
"Grace, don't think that just because he canceled his engagement with Caroline, I'll agree to let you marry into the Taft family."
"I'm telling you, neither I nor the elders of the Taft family will ever let you marry."
"Your status will never be recognized."
Grace just smiled indifferently.
"Mrs. Taft, if that's how you see me, then you're gravely mistaken."
"Do you think I care about marrying into the Taft family?"
"That's all your imagination. The only thing I care about is Quentin."
"As long as he's willing to hold my hand firmly, regardless of the challenges that lie ahead, I am prepared to face them alongside him. As for those superficial titles, I have never placed any value on them."
Ruby sneered, not believing a word.
"Grace, it seems you're not only shameless but also hypocritical."
"Your lies are endless. If Quentin weren't the president of the Taft Group, without the status and power of the Taft family, without his current influence and wealth, if he were just an ordinary office worker."
"Making a thousand dollars a month, unable to give you luxury cars and mansions, unable to give you gold and jewelry, unable to give you a lavish lifestyle, would you be with him? Do you think I'd believe you're not in it for the money and status?"
This time, Grace didn't back down or show fear.
She walked step by step, confidently towards Ruby.
"Then I think you're truly pitiful. The love you define is only about money; that's not love, it's a transaction."
"I admit, he does have excellent conditions—money, status, all of it. It indeed brings great convenience to my life."
"I won't pretend I don't love money; after all, who doesn't? But Mrs. Taft, there's romance in wealth and romance in poverty. If from this moment on, he were just an ordinary office worker, I would still love him and be with him."
"I've driven enough luxury cars and lived in enough mansions."
"As long as he's with me, I'll cherish it all."
Ruby just looked at her with an unchanged expression.
Finally, Ruby said with extreme disdain, "You're naive."
"Grace, you'd better remember what you said today. If that day ever comes, don't come pleading to me."
"Quentin is my son. He's been accustomed to a privileged life since childhood. Do you think he'll endure hardship with you?"
"Just wait. I'll watch you get caught in your trap."
Grace crossed her arms, looking at Ruby with determination.
"Don't worry, even if I lose, I won't plead with you."
Ruby was already upset, and Grace's retort made her even more so.
"Don't be too happy too soon. I'll do everything I can to make him marry Caroline."
Grace simply replied, "We'll see."
Ruby hadn't been so frustrated ever before. Especially seeing Grace's confident, calm demeanor at this moment, Ruby found it even more unbearable.
Having missed the slap earlier, Ruby remained resentful.
Seizing the moment, she suddenly raised her hand. However, at that moment, a familiar voice suddenly came to Ruby's ear, "Mrs. Taft, where are your manners? Your grace?"
Ruby and Grace turned around in shock simultaneously.
"Quentin!" Ruby quickly withdrew her hand in surprise.
Grace stared at Quentin in a daze. He stood with his arms crossed, leaning casually against the door frame, a faint smile on his lips.
Grace hadn't expected him to be there.
So, had Quentin heard everything she just said?
