Chapter 92 Vincent Carries Her Down the Mountain
"Vincent, what are you doing here?"
Jessica was really surprised to meet Vincent here.
"Today is my father's death anniversary. Our whole family came to pay respects to him. What about you? Why are you here?" Vincent's voice was particularly low.
"I apologize for bringing up your difficult situation. I came to visit my mom too."
"Are you alone?"
Vincent was naturally surprised.
After all, he already knew about Jessica and Gabriel getting married, so Jessica's mother could be considered Gabriel's mother-in-law.
Both logically and emotionally, he shouldn't have let his wife come to pay respects to her mother alone.
Jessica nodded. "Yes, I haven't been here for a while. I miss my mom a lot, so I wanted to come and see her."
At that moment, another thunderclap sounded.
Soon after, raindrops began to fall.
It started as a light drizzle, but within two minutes, the raindrops were as big as beans.
The heavy rain poured down, quickly shrouding the entire mountain in mist.
Jessica and Vincent hastened their pace downhill.
But because she was worried about her baby and the slippery mountain path, Jessica didn't dare to move forward boldly.
"Don't be afraid. Follow me."
At that moment, Vincent's voice sounded in her ear.
The next moment, Jessica felt warm when a pair of large, gentle hands grabbed hers.
"Special circumstances, no offense."
Through the rain curtain, Vincent’s considerate voice sounded gentle.
The burden in Jessica's heart lightened a lot.
Despite the heavy rain, she knew that, as a married woman, she shouldn't let a man hold her hand. This gesture was inappropriate, no matter how she looked at it.
But thinking about her baby, she didn't resist or refuse.
There were several more flights of stairs ahead, and the mountain path was excessively slick. If she were alone, she might easily fall.
She couldn't bear to imagine what would happen if she fell down.
With Vincent holding her hand, Jessica felt much more at ease and dared to move forward boldly.
In the rain, Vincent held her hand and walked ahead, with Jessica following behind.
Through the hazy rain curtain, Jessica suddenly felt a strong sense of bitterness in her heart, because Vincent’s broad and tall figure reminded her so much of Gabriel. She felt a deep familiarity with this figure.
How could it be so similar?
In that instant, she even thought it was Gabriel coming to meet her.
Behind them, the rain grew heavier and heavier.
The sky flashed with lightning, and the rain poured down like water.
As they descended the first flight of stairs, Jessica didn't see the path clearly and suddenly stepped into empty space.
She stumbled, her body losing balance and falling abruptly.
In that moment, her heart seemed to stop.
For a moment, her mind went blank, completely forgetting to think.
She was too scared.
It wasn't until she felt a strong embrace and realized that her body didn't feel the expected pain that she opened her eyes.
Jessica immediately felt a sense of relief realizing she had been caught. "Thank you, Vincent. I’m so scared."
She had really been scared, to the point where her heart almost stopped.
Fortunately, he caught her.
"How's your foot? Did you twist it?" Vincent inquired, lowering his head.
Jessica moved her foot and found that she could do so freely without any major issues. However, her sandal broke after the recent misstep, making it embarrassing for her to walk properly.
"My shoe seems to be broken," Jessica said, then bent down, took off her shoe, and said, "I'll walk barefoot!"
"No," Vincent immediately denied, then explained, "It's too dangerous to walk barefoot on a slippery road on rainy days."
"But my shoe is seriously damaged. I probably can't wear it anymore. It's okay. I'll be careful and walk slowly," Jessica said.
At that moment, Vincent suddenly bent down in front of her, saying with his low and firm voice, "Come up, I'll carry you down."
Without hesitation, Jessica directly refused, "No, I've already troubled you enough. If I let you carry me down, I'll feel even more guilty."
Moreover, such an action was too intimate, and she was a married woman.
Vincent understood her concerns.
He turned around. His eyes were as serious as stars and moons when he looked at Jessica. "I understand your concerns. Don't burden yourself. Whether as a police officer or as a friend, I will step forward at this time."
"Over the years, I have been involved in many storm rescues. Ninety-year-old grandmothers, twenty-year-old girls, or newly married pregnant women -I have carried them all, so don't feel embarrassed. This is my duty."
"In my heart, you are all the same. You are all my rescue subjects, so don't think too much about it."
Vincent's persuasion was indeed powerful.
After he said this, Jessica felt much more relaxed.
"If you get tired, just tell me at once. I can walk down by myself at any time."
"Okay."
After receiving his promise, Jessica bit her lip and climbed onto his back little by little.
After Vincent carried her, he picked up the shoe she had placed on the ground.
"Let me take the shoe!"
Jessica responded immediately, then reached out to take the shoe.
The rain intensified as they descended a few more steps, shrouding the entire mountain in a thick fog that made even visibility blurry.
At that moment, Vincent's phone rang.
His phone had been ringing all along. Jessica thought it must be his family worrying about him.
"Vincent, please put me down. I can walk by myself." Jessica really felt guilty.
No one had ever treated her like this, so meticulously and protectively. At this moment, despite the pouring rain, she felt a strong warmth in her heart.
"It's okay, I can."
As Vincent spoke, he carried Jessica down the last flight of stairs.
Although it was still a distance to the main gate at the foot of the mountain, they had already descended the stairs, and the path ahead was mostly flat concrete with occasional slopes, which was much better.
Several earth-shattering thunderclaps struck.
Vincent looked up at the sky, then immediately said, "The rain may get heavier. Jessica, hold me tight. There's a pavilion ahead where we can take shelter from the rain."
"Okay."
Jessica hugged his neck tightly.
Vincent, carrying her, began to run frantically.
Finally, a few minutes later, Jessica saw the pavilion close by.
At that moment, she pointed at the pavilion excitedly and said, "Vincent, I see the pavilion. We're almost there."
"Okay."
Two minutes later, Vincent carried Jessica to the pavilion.
Jessica immediately got off his back and hurriedly handed him a bottle of mineral water from her bag. "You must be tired. Drink some water."
Indeed, Vincent was a bit tired. He took a few sips of water and finished the entire bottle of mineral water.
Upon noticing the empty mineral water bottle in front of her, Jessica suddenly realized a dilemma.
She appeared to have given him the wrong water!
