Chapter 110 The Last Three Days
Hannah invited hopefully, “Ethan, why don't you come over for dinner tonight? I still haven’t thanked you for helping Camila.”
“Sure, I'll come over. No need for a big fuss. Didn't you say you’d be taking Camila to a school? Did you settle the kindergarten issue?” Ethan slightly changed the topic, feeling a bit awkward.
Hannah explained while smiling, “This area is a bit remote, and the nearest kindergarten is about six miles away. It's a private one, and I've already enrolled her. I can send her there tomorrow morning.”
As a single mother, she could only rely on herself.
During dinner, Camila refused to get off Ethan's lap, and it was the latter’s first time pampering a child. He happily fed the little one, finding it quite enjoyable.
“Ethan, Camila can eat on her own. She's always been so independent, even refusing help from my mom. I don’t know what’s wrong with her today,” Looking at Ethan, Hannah felt like she was at home. Even though she said that, her expression was satisfied.
“It's fine. I really like Camila as well!” Ethan was focused on Camila, casually replying without much thought.
“I also like Daddy Wilson!” Camila happily said, making him burst into laughter.
Hannah suddenly changed the subject, “Oh, Ethan, there's a jewelry exhibition at the convention center tomorrow. That jade you had carved into a fairy will be showcased, so it’ll surely create a sensation and boost our company's reputation. Do you have time to come with me?”
“I might not have the time tomorrow, since I have other things to attend to. However, I'll let you know if I have time,” he wasn’t enthusiastic about this kind of thing, and he noticed Hannah's expectations, so he decided to distance himself from her.
Hannah couldn’t hide her disappointment, “Alright then.”
“Having the chairman is enough to attract attention. Whether I go or not isn’t important!” Ethan said with a smile. In reality, he wasn’t very interested and also didn’t want to draw too much attention, since that could backfire.
After all, the Wilson family was watching him in secret, especially after the Seattle incident. They might not act reckless in the short term, but they’d definitely observe his every move.
Beverly's warning earlier today already indicated that.
After finishing dinner, Hannah cleaned the dishes while Ethan looked after Camila. Just then, his phone suddenly rang.
“Chloe? Isn't it a bit early for a call today?” he answered the phone and chuckled, accustomed to Chloe usually calling before bed.
“I know, I just missed you... Are you okay?” her voice came from the other end, filled with a deep affection that left him reluctant.
“I'm good. I just finished dinner, and I was planning on calling you after my shower. Is something wrong? You seem a bit off.”
Ethan was puzzled. Since his return, he noticed that Chloe changed a lot. Not only did she lose weight, but her attitude was also a little strange.
“It's nothing... I just wanted to hear your voice. Anyway, there’s nothing else, so I'll hang up now.” Chloe finished speaking on the other end.
Ethan frowned as he listened to the busy signal coming from his phone. He felt a sense of unease and restlessness.
After Chloe ended the call, she turned back to look at Greg behind her. Her face was filled with pain as she asked, “Why isn’t she keeping promise? Won’t she even give me my last two months?”
Greg helplessly sighed, “There's a reason this time, Miss. The young master is coming to visit next week, and it’s most likely for your engagement. If you don't return, it’d be impossible. That’s why the Madam asked for your early return!” Although it hurt him to see Chloe’s current state, from his view, this wasn’t such a bad thing for her and Ethan.
Since they knew they couldn't be together, why sink deeper into it?
“Is that also what my grandfather wants?” Chloe asked with a desperate look.
“He's still at Fragrant Garden...” Greg didn't finish his sentence, but it was clear what he meant.
She knew her grandfather's health was not good. He was seriously ill and had been undergoing treatment at Fragrant Garden. He hasn’t been involved with the Miller family’s matter recently, but that was because he was unable to!
As for Fragrant Garden, ordinary people might’ve never heard of it, let alone knew what that seemingly-inconspicuous clinic was.
“I'll call my father!” Chloe took a deep breath, clearly not giving up.
Since her mother couldn't help, she could only start with her father, Munro. Perhaps she could still fight for a chance.
As long as she could be with Ethan, she wouldn’t give up even with slim chances.
“Chloe? Didn't your mom say you were returning in a few days? Why are you calling me again?”
However, as soon as the call connected and Munro’s voice came through, Chloe's face, filled with anticipation, instantly showed sadness.
“Dad, can I not return for a little while?” Breathing deeply, she decided to fight for one more chance.
“Of course not! Didn't Greg tell you that Kenny’s coming for the engagement next week? He's coming specifically for you, so what’ll he do if you’re not around?” Munro's reproachful tone left no room for doubt, his attitude already clear.
Her last glimmer of hope completely shattered. She knew that unless her beloved grandpa returned from Fragrant Garden, her fate was already sealed.
She was silent for a while until Munro warned her, “Throw away your unrealistic ideas. Don't forget you’re my daughter, the Miller family’s heiress. Your future doesn't belong to just you!”
These words were so piercing and ridiculous, leaving her face filled with sadness.
Being this so-called heiress, she’d rather not have such a status and become an ordinary person instead!
Munro immediately continued, “Don't think that I don't know what you're doing in Novaria just because I'm in Houston. I know what you're thinking; If you don't want the Wilsons to find out about that banished man, it's best you don’t act impulsive!”
At that moment, Chloe felt as if she had been struck by lightning.
Munro already knew about Ethan's situation, and he was using the latter to threaten her.
Her father perhaps wouldn't really do anything to Ethan, but her own paranoid mother might.
“Get ready; you have three more days. After that, I want you back here immediately!” Munro wasted no more words and ended the call after giving his daughter one final deadline.
