Chapter 206 First Meeting with Orion
Percival's recovery naturally delighted Chloe; it was the happiest event for her in a long time. After having dinner with him at Fragrant Garden, she stayed behind to take care of him alone, as they still had some heart-to-heart conversations to share that evening.
Ethan left Fragrant Garden with Sarah right after dinner.
It was quite a hassle for Edward's driver, Lysander, who waited foolishly in the car outside for several hours. When Ethan finally remembered, he felt embarrassed and kept apologizing as he got into the car.
"Mr. Wilson, don't worry about it. The most important thing for a soldier is to follow orders; waiting for a few hours is no big deal! Back when Edward was in office, I once waited for him at the headquarters for a whole day and night. In wartime, no matter how long it takes, we must wait as long as we're alive!"
Lysander clearly had a typical soldier's temperament. Even if he was angry, Ethan's sincere apologies had already dispelled it.
"You look like you're in your 30s. Have you been with Edward for a long time?" Ethan asked curiously as he looked at Lysander.
"I'm 38 this year. I joined the army at 18 and entered the guard company. At 20, I was fortunate enough to become Edward's driver. At that time, he was still a lieutenant colonel. After that, 18 years passed by in a flash. After he retired from his high position five years ago, I've continued to be his driver!"
Lysander reminisced while driving, a smile on his resolute face as if he cherished the time he spent following Edward.
"Didn't you ever think about advancing further after Edward retired? Even with a colonel's rank, you have no real power as his driver. Given how long you've been with him, I'm sure he'd arrange a satisfactory position for you if you asked. Do you really want to be his driver for life?"
Ethan was even more puzzled. If he didn't have a good impression of Lysander, he might've suspected there was something wrong with him for not being promoted. But on second thought, it was unlikely. If Lysander had any issues, how could Edward keep him so close?
"It might seem dumb to other people, but I think being Edward's driver is pretty good! He's someone I want to follow and learn from all my life, and he's one of the people I respect the most besides Luke. To be honest, even if I were offered the chance to be Luke's driver, I wouldn't take it!" Lysander shook his head earnestly.
Ethan felt genuine admiration for Lysander's high level of awareness.
He pondered, 'Nowadays, many officers are focused on how to get promoted and gain the most power, forgetting why they joined the military in the first place. How many officers like Lysander are there?'
The car soon arrived at the Harris family's estate. After getting out with Sarah, Ethan said to Lysander, "Thank Edward for me when you get back. I'll visit him when I have the time!"
"Sure, Mr. Wilson, I'll pass on the message! Also, here's my personal contact information. If you run into any trouble in Everglow City you need help with, feel free to contact me. I can handle most situations!"
Lysander agreed and handed Ethan a piece of paper that had his number on it.
Ethan looked at the paper, his heart stirring.
This seemed like a personal gesture, but Ethan knew that Lysander wouldn't have done this without Edward's approval!
Lysander's identity as Edward's driver meant that everything he said and did represented Edward himself!
"Thank you, Lysander. Remember to thank Edward for me when you return!" Ethan nodded heavily. This time, his gratitude toward Edward was different.
Lysander smiled knowingly, waving before he drove away.
"Now you're really something. With Edward's driver backing you, anyone here who wants to mess with you will have to think twice about their strength!" Sarah teased from the side, smiling widely out of joy for Ethan.
"It's not as exaggerated as you say. Edward having Lysander come to talk to me shows that he can't always step in. I can handle most things on my own, and in truly troublesome situations, no one knows what choices will be made at critical moments."
Ethan wasn't overly optimistic. Whether it was Edward or Luke, they couldn't help him completely. They couldn't protect him like their own child, or they'd be seen as biased.
In other words, was it a favorable circumstance when the elderly failed to maintain their dignity in old age?
At that moment, the Harris family's estate gates opened, with Isolde walking out.
Seeing Ethan and Sarah, her face immediately soured.
"You two still have the nerve to return here?" Her question momentarily stunned them.
They were wondering what they had done to the Harris family that was so bad that they couldn't even return.
"Isolde, make yourself clear. Why can't we return? Don't forget, I'm also a member of the Harris family!" Sarah angrily asked, her brows furrowed.
"You still consider yourself a family member? Look at what you've brought back! I know about Ethan causing a scene at the engagement party today, dragging the Harris family into it! If we get on the Ashford family's bad side, you two will be the main culprits!" Isolde scolded, pointing at them.
"Setting aside whether we harmed the family, I'm curious—didn't Carlos ground you? How did you get out? Aren't you afraid of being punished if he finds out?" Ethan laughed in exasperation, mockingly reminding her.
"My grandfather was just putting on a show. Do you really think he'd do anything to me? He released me as soon as he returned today; what can you do about it?" Isolde replied smugly, "I'm going out to have fun with my friends now. What business is it of yours?"
In reality, she had begged for a long time and finally convinced Carlos to lift the restriction reluctantly. If he knew she was causing trouble for Ethan the moment she regained her freedom, he would probably be furious!
"What are you arguing about at the gate?" At that moment, a middle-aged man walked out from the courtyard with a displeased tone.
"Dad, you're back in Everglow City?" Sarah's eyes lit up upon seeing him.
It was Orion, and this was Ethan's first time meeting him in person. Although Ethan had been interacting with Sarah and the Harris family for a while, this was indeed his first time meeting Orion, who was now practically his father-in-law！
"Orion!" Ethan quickly greeted him as he came to his senses.
Isolde snorted coldly when seeing Orion, walking away in her high heels.
According to their family hierarchy, he was her uncle. But evidently, aside from Clarence, she didn't regard the family branch in Novaria all. She only recognized the family's main bloodline!
