Chapter 545 Useless
Ethan eyeballed Norman and the crew from a distance, then gave the Grail a little shake and hollered, "This thing right here? Yeah, it's your so-called magical artifact. Basically, it just sucks up power."
Norman and the gang looked at each other, their faces going all kinds of weird.
"That Black Magic Wand from the Pantheon legend? Yeah, it’s supposed to gather energy too, like, make you super strong for a bit or even bring someone back from the brink," Phoenix chimed in, looking all deep in thought and nodding slowly.
Ethan sighed, "Yeah, the Grail does something similar, but it's kinda shady and not for the average Joe."
"What do you mean by that?" Phoenix shot back, eyebrows knitting together.
"To handle this thing, you need some serious mental mojo. Only when your mind power, or spiritual sense, hits a certain level can you make it do its thing."
Ethan had to break it down again. The reason he could mess with the Grail, making it grow and shrink, was 'cause his spiritual sense was off the charts. Besides Neil, who was still holed up in Celestia Vale, and the mysterious head honcho of Celestia Vale he hadn't met, no one else, not even Phoenix or Raymond, had the mental chops like him.
"Oh, gotcha. I was always using super energy to fire up the Grail before. No wonder it was a bust," Phoenix said, nodding like a light bulb just went off.
Norman, all curious, piped up, "Ethan, can you show us a demo?"
"Since you asked, I guess I can't chicken out," Ethan said with a wry smile, then zoned in on the Grail with his spiritual sense.
The once golden Grail lit up like a supernova, floated out of Ethan's hand, and hung in the air.
With his mind in control, Ethan made the Grail morph into a giant thing, just like Angela had seen before. The energy waves it threw off were intense, making Norman and Remington step back a couple of paces.
Luckily, Phoenix shot out two streams of energy to help Norman and Remington handle the pressure, and they started looking normal again.
Ethan broke it down slowly, "This Grail is mainly a defensive beast. When it gets big, it can smash stuff with its power and energy, and it can also shield its owner inside the cup, making them untouchable. Unless the enemy's strong enough to bust this thing, the person inside is pretty much invincible."
"This thing is seriously awesome!" Norman and Remington couldn't help but exchange looks, realizing just how extraordinary the Grail really was.
"But it's kinda useless to you guys since none of you can actually use it," Ethan hesitated for a sec but decided to keep it real with Norman and Remington, seeing how pumped they were.
Phoenix suddenly piped up, "Let me give it a shot!"
"Sure thing," Ethan chuckled, then pulled his spiritual sense out of the Grail. It shrank back to its original size and plopped into Ethan's hand.
Ethan casually tossed the Grail to Phoenix.
Phoenix caught it and immediately tried to inject his spiritual sense into it like Ethan had shown, but his face soon twisted into a weird expression.
"What's up?" Norman asked, noticing Phoenix's odd look.
"I..." Phoenix trailed off, looking deep in thought.
Only someone with a strong enough spiritual sense could control the Grail, as Ethan had shown by handling it from a distance. Clearly, Phoenix wasn't there yet, so while Ethan could make it float and change size, Phoenix couldn't get it to do squat.
Norman asked, "So, you can't control it either?"
"Yeah, this Grail is definitely an artifact, but it needs a super strong spiritual sense to work. Without that, it's just a fancy paperweight," Phoenix nodded with a bitter smile.
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but the thing you've been busting your butts to get is actually useless to you," Ethan reminded Norman and Remington.
Norman and Remington exchanged glances, even Bennit frowned, clearly bummed out by this turn of events.
"Phoenix, since this thing is useless to both of us, why not give it to someone who can actually use it?" Norman suddenly suggested to Phoenix.
Phoenix replied with a smile, "This thing was never mine to begin with, so do whatever you want with it. I won't butt in."
"Norman, are you thinking of giving the Grail to Ethan?" Remington was surprised by Norman's suggestion but quickly caught on.
Ethan quickly jumped in, "Hey, I'm not trying to snag this Grail. Even if it's not super useful to you, it's still a big deal for folks in Cross Christianity. Having it isn't totally pointless."
Honestly, after snagging the Requiem Tower, the Grail didn't really do it for him. He could see what Norman was getting at and didn't want to owe anyone for something he didn't really need.
