Chapter56 Unfair Wager
He was almost certain that James and Edwin were here to swindle money. It seemed that the Harris family's financial power was currently under Sarah's father. That's why James used such a trick, actually using his own grandfather to satisfy his own selfish interests!
“Ten million dollars? Are you genuinely asking that amount? Money is not an issue. As long as you cure Grandpa, I guarantee that you won't miss a penny. However, before he’s cured, you won't get a single cent!” Sarah obviously understood James' little tricks and couldn't possibly be fooled!
“What’re you saying, Sarah? Do you not want to save Grandpa?” James suddenly became furious. He needed that one hundred million to live a luxurious life!
“Can I see Grandpa Clarence?” Ethan suddenly spoke up, asking Sarah.
The closer they were to the old man, the strong the bead’s energy was. Since they were so close, Ethan also wanted to see the situation here!
“You want to see Grandpa?” Sarah was instantly stunned by his words.
“Ethan, do you know medicine?” Chloe looked at Ethan with a puzzled expression, tilting her head.
“Just a little bit!” Ethan casually lied, saying he just wanted to take a look and wouldn't make a mess.
James stared at Ethan mockingly, “What’s this joke? Do you think you're a miracle doctor? So many doctors couldn't treat him, and now you want to check on him? You'll be responsible if anything goes wrong, you know?”
“If your friend can treat Grandpa, then why can’t mine? Ethan, go ahead and take a look. Even if you can't figure anything out, it wouldn't make a difference!”
Sarah was initially slightly hesitant, but after hearing James' words, she wanted to anger him!
In any case, Ethan was just taking a look. Even if he couldn’t discern anything, it would be fine.
James snorted with an ugly expression, “Fine, check on him and see if you, pretending to be a doctor, can figure anything out. If anything happens to Grandpa, none of you will be able to escape!”
Ethan approached the bed and placed one hand on Clarence’s left wrist. The bead on his chest indeed reacted, just like before. It was constantly absorbing something from Clarence’s body, but this time, it wasn't cold air. Instead, it was a thick and sticky aura. The speed at which these auras were absorbed was slower compared to the cold air, but as soon as they passed through Ethan's palm, they immediately transformed into that cold air before being completely absorbed by the bead.
Ethan could even sense that the cold air, transformed through this process, was even cooler and more concentrated. It was as if it were undergoing some kind of purification, and even the cold air in his own body grew stronger alongside it.
Furthermore, as these dense auras were sucked out and transformed, Clarence's deathly pale face visibly lightened. Realizing this, Ethan's heart skipped a beat. Could it be that these auras were the reason behind the old man’s sickness?
These were toxins, no? This meant that the bead also could detoxify and purify things!
“After pretending to look for so long, what can you actually see?” James spoke impatiently.
Only then did Ethan retract his hand and ignore James. He then looked at Sarah and said, “I’ve already figured out Clarence's condition. If you trust me, I can detoxify him right away!”
Hearing this, everyone present was shocking, thinking that they had misheard!
“Ethan, are you really sure you can detoxify him?” Chloe asked with concern.
“Nonsense! You’re saying you can treat him? Who are you trying to fool? No, I absolutely disagree with this guy's reckless actions!” James jumped up, speaking bluntly to the three of them.
“What's all this noise about? We could hear you from afar! Don't you know this is Grandpa's room?” Just then, a man's voice grew closer as a group of people appeared at the door.
“Dad, please tell Sarah to stop. She actually brought in some stranger who claims he can treat Grandpa!” James shouted even louder when he saw the newcomer, explaining to the middle-aged man leading the group.
The man was none other than Alan, Clarence's eldest son. He was wearing suit and was quite overweight, giving him a somewhat silly appearance.
“Sarah, what’s going on here?” Alan furrowed his brows, asking Sarah after looking at Ethan.
Sarah defended herself in front of Alan, “Uncle, don't listen to him. Ethan is just my friend who came with Chloe today to hang out! On the other hand, James invited some foreign doctor to treat Grandpa. However, he asked me for ten million before even treating the illness!”
James immediately shouted at her, “Edwin said he can treat him, but you clearly refused. Seems like you really don’t want Grandpa to recover, since you’re asking this stranger to treat him instead. You must want to harm Grandpa, right?”
“Enough, why are you arguing as a family? Both of you have mishandled this matter. Treating Dad is such an important thing, so why didn’t any of you wait for my arrival first?” Alan scolded, displaying a business-like attitude as he didn’t favor anyone.
He suspiciously asked Ethan, “Anyway, you’re saying you can treat Dad? Are you a doctor?”
“I’m not a doctor, but I can indeed neutralize the strong poison in Clarence’s body. Besides, I’m not asking any payment for this!” Ethan explained calmly, shading James with his last sentence.
James couldn't help but notice Ethan's intention as he angrily said, “Dad, don't listen to him. He's still so young, he can't be that capable!”
“If you won’t let me examine, then how do you know I definitely can't treat him? Or do you not want to save your own grandfather?”
“I’m offering this for free, too!” Ethan chuckled, seemingly unimpressed. However, him mentioning that it was free almost drove James crazy.
In reality, he didn't want to please the Harris family. Had it not been for the poison in Clarence’s body, he wouldn't be acting so kind right now.
The converted poison had this purer coldness that reeled him in.
James retorted angrily, “Don't wrongly accuse people here. Fine, if you insist, then you’d better explain if it doesn't go well. The Harris family isn't a place where you can act recklessly!” He was truly angry now. If Ethan wanted to treat Clarence so badly, then so be it! However, if he failed, James would make sure to teach him a lesson! From his perspective, Ethan would definitely fail!
“Then how about a bet? If I can cure your grandpa, you have to kneel down and apologize to me. On the contrary, if I can't, I’ll kneel down and apologize to you!” Ethan narrowed his eyes and proposed a bet to James.
James scoffed mockingly, “What a joke! Who do you think you are? Why should I bet with you? Moreover, you even want me to kneel and apologize to you? You're quite ambitious. Are you even worthy of that?”
“So you aren’t confident? What, are you scared of losing to me?” Ethan raised his eyebrows as he provoked James.
“Ridiculous! How could I possibly lose? If you really want to bet, then I have another condition. If you lose, not only do you have to kneel down and apologize, but you also have to imitate a dog and lick my shoes clean!” James lifted his left foot, showing Ethan his shoe’s dirty sole with a cold and sinister expression.
“James, you're going too far!” Chloe didn't expect James to propose such an unfair condition; he was really going overboard. Her expressions changed as she angrily reprimanded him.
James smirked triumphantly, “That's my condition. If you don’t like it, then you can leave!”
“Alright, sure.” Ethan agreed without hesitation.
Hearing this, everyone was stunned. They didn't expect Ethan to agree to such a condition. It was either he was extremely confident or he had gone insane!
“Ethan!” Chloe couldn't help but worry as she looked at him, wanting to persuade him.
Ethan replied confidently, “Don't worry, just trust me!”
“Just do your best. If it doesn't work out, don't force yourself. Grandpa's health is the most important!” Chloe reminded him with concern.
“I don't want any disturbances while I treat him, so all of you must leave!” he turned his head and said to the Harris family members.
Everyone was surprised.
“Why? What if you want to harm Grandpa?” James was dissatisfied at this.
“Your dad and Sarah can stay in the room, but you have to leave because you’re noisy. They can watch over me fully here, so don’t worry!” Ethan pointed at Alan and Sarah, explaining with a smile.
James clenched his teeth angrily and coldly snorted, “Alright, let's see what tricks you have. If you can't save Grandpa, you're done for!"
