Chapter 408 Threat
Ethan and Alice didn't mind; they decided to just go with the flow.
But Herong, who came in later, didn't ignore them. Not seeing Lilia, he walked straight to Ethan and Alice.
"I can tell you're a Half-Step Grandmaster too!" Herong suddenly said, staring at Ethan.
Ethan hadn't even realized Herong was a Half-Step Grandmaster until he pointed it out.
"Why are you getting close to Lilia?" Herong asked, squinting his eyes.
"Are you paranoid?" Ethan asked, amused.
"What do you mean?" Herong looked confused.
"I just met Lilia today because my fiancée Alice is friends with her. Alice wanted me to check on the King since he's sick. Why would there be another reason?" Ethan said seriously.
"What if I don't let you treat the King?" Herong asked, sounding hostile.
"Sorry, no one tells me what to do, including you. I don't need your permission," Ethan said, shaking his head with a smile.
"So, you're defying me and becoming my enemy?" Herong's tone grew more menacing.
"Think what you want. That's why I said you're paranoid. You think too highly of yourself," Ethan mocked calmly.
"Fine, you've angered me! I don't care if you're a Half-Step Grandmaster or where you're from; you won't leave Norway alive!" Herong decided to kill Ethan and didn't hide it.
"That depends if you can," Ethan shrugged, unfazed by the threat.
Just then, a middle-aged man in luxurious attire and a golden crown walked over with Lilia. It had to be King Ryan of Norway.
"Herong, why aren't you going in?" Ryan asked expressionlessly.
"I ran into Lilia's friends and stayed to chat. You seem well; no episodes lately, right?" Herong's gloomy expression vanished, and he smiled at Ryan.
"Not dead yet," Ryan nodded, then looked at Ethan and Alice.
"Your Majesty!" Alice bowed to Ryan while Ethan stood still, meeting Ryan's gaze calmly.
"Is this the renowned doctor from Vexa Lilia mentioned?" Ryan asked indifferently.
"Your Majesty, I am Ethan," Ethan nodded politely.
"Dad, Ethan is a renowned doctor from Vexa. He came to treat your illness. Why not let him examine you now?" Lilia suggested softly, holding Ryan's arm.
Ryan showed a hint of emotion. If not forced, he wouldn't want to be threatened by Herong and forced to marry Lilia off to him.
"No, my treatment is at a critical stage. Anyone else treating the King now would ruin my efforts. Please consider carefully, your Majesty!" Herong stepped forward, reminding Ryan before he could speak.
Hearing Herong's warning, Ryan looked torn.
Ryan disliked Herong but at least Herong could treat his strange illness. Compared to the unfamiliar Ethan, he hesitated.
"Dad, it's just an examination. If Herong won't even allow that, maybe he's hiding something in his treatment," Lilia said, seeing Ryan's hesitation.
She trusted Ethan and wanted him to have a chance to examine Ryan.
"Lilia, are you doubting me? Your Majesty, you too? If so, I won't treat you anymore. If they can't cure you, don't come back to me. I can't bear the shame or the accusation of harming the King!" Herong said, looking livid.
He was trying to force Ryan to choose between him and Ethan.
"No need for an examination!" Ethan suddenly said.
"Ethan, what do you mean?" Lilia asked, surprised.
Had Ethan been intimidated by Herong?
"Do you already know what's going on?" Alice asked, seeming to understand Ethan better.
"Mr. Winston is so nervous about the King and won't let me examine him. Isn't that enough to explain the problem? He's guilty!" Ethan said seriously.
"That's right. You won't let Ethan examine the King because you're guilty!" Alice accused Herong angrily.
"Are you accusing me? Your Majesty, I think these two suspicious people are the ones to be doubted. I'm only concerned about your health. You wouldn't trust two outsiders over me, would you?" Herong countered.
"They may be outsiders, but am I an outsider? This is my father. If anyone should be trusted, it should be me, not you! Ethan only wants to examine my dad, but why are you reacting so strongly? If you're not guilty, what are you afraid of? Wait for Ethan's conclusion before you jump to refute!" Lilia retorted.
Herong was speechless. He could call Ethan and Alice outsiders, but Lilia was Ryan's beloved princess. How could she be an outsider?
"An examination is fine, but the King's identity is special. For safety's sake, we should be cautious," Herong said, hesitating before compromising.
Refusing Ethan's treatment now would only make him seem more suspicious, and Ethan might not even find anything.
"What do you propose?" Ethan asked with a cold smile.
"You can examine the King, but if you can't find the cause or cure him, what then? Anyone treating Ryan could affect my previous treatment. Will you take responsibility for that?" Herong asked sinisterly.
"Stop beating around the bush. You're just trying to make me back off. How about we make a bet? If I can't cure the King, you can do whatever you want with me!" Ethan interrupted impatiently.
