Chapter 283 Defying Fate
Everyone stared at Ethan, astonished that he didn't realize the trouble he had caused and was even feigning innocence! Only Lyra suppressed a laugh, feeling immensely satisfied as she looked at the car with its crumpled front.
"If you don't give me an explanation today, don't even think about leaving! So many people are watching; do you think I won't call the police and have you arrested right now?" Hubert warned through gritted teeth.
"It's up to you. Suppose you want to, go ahead. But I just heard you say this was a birthday gift from your dad, right?" Ethan responded with a nonchalant chuckle.
"That's right! Let me tell you, my dad is Roy, the general manager of Zenith Group! He can easily deal with you," Hubert boasted immediately.
"Is your dad that impressive? Where is he? It's your birthday; he should be here," Ethan said. He had planned to attend this so-called birthday party. But now it seemed that Hubert's birthday party was just a gathering of him and his rowdy friends, not a formal event at all.
Even the Regal Hotel, with its façade, was at most a four-star establishment, not a place where someone of Roy's stature would frequent. It was more suited to these mischievous noble offspring.
"What do you mean? If my dad were here, your situation would be even worse!" Hubert didn't expect Ethan to bring up Roy and immediately asked with a suspicious look.
"But I am not afraid of it. If you can get your dad here, I'll compensate you for the car today. How's that?" Ethan smiled as he laid out his terms, deciding to cut the nonsense and not waste time with these kids.
"Ridiculous! My dad isn't someone you can meet. If you don't compensate for the car, I'll call the police right now!" Hubert sneered, pulling out his phone to threaten.
"Hubert, I suggest you do as he says. If your dad finds out you called the police on my boyfriend, he might hit you!" Lyra, fearing nothing with Hubert, reminded with a light laugh before Ethan could speak.
"Who exactly is he?" Hubert's face changed immediately upon hearing this. Though he was a playboy, he wasn't stupid. Seeing Lyra and Ethan's confident demeanor, he realized there was more to this man than met the eye.
For some reason, Hubert suddenly felt a sense of impending doom.
"Before you call the police, you should call your dad. You're rich enough to afford the call. Just tell him my name is Ethan, and I'm the one who crushed your car," Ethan said with a smile.
"Fine, I'll call. You wait!" Hubert, suppressing his unease, made a threatening remark before dialing Roy's number.
Initially, Roy was surprised to receive a call from Hubert, knowing his son was celebrating his birthday with friends today. He thought Hubert might be missing him. But when Roy heard that the car he had just gifted Hubert had been crushed, he immediately sensed something was wrong.
"What did you say his name was?" Roy, thinking he had misheard, quickly asked for confirmation.
"He said he is Ethan and that you should come over immediately if you want him to compensate for the car." Hubert's voice trembled as he sensed Roy's unusual tone.
"Ethan? How could it be Ethan? Listen to me, don't do anything, wait for me to get there!" Roy said before hanging up immediately.
Roy's reaction upon hearing Ethan's name was so intense that Hubert, listening to the busy tone on the phone, realized he was in deep trouble.
"Don't be nervous. You're the one causing me trouble; I should be the nervous one," Ethan reminded Hubert, who was sweating profusely.
"I think you're the real waste!" Lyra scoffed, unimpressed by Hubert's pathetic demeanor.
Seeing this, Hubert's friends also realized that Ethan was no ordinary person and that they had likely provoked someone they shouldn't have. Reflecting on their earlier mockery, everyone began to feel uneasy.
"Actually, I'm not much older than you. It's normal for young people to be arrogant, but you need to have the means to back it up. Relying solely on having a powerful dad and thinking you're invincible is extremely foolish," Ethan said, glancing at the group of spoiled noble offspring. He sighed, feeling no desire to continue toying with them.
"Ethan, you're so cool! These little brats actually had the nerve to look down on you!" Lyra, full of excitement, gave Ethan a thumbs-up.
Soon, a black Mercedes arrived at the scene. Clearly, Roy had rushed over immediately after receiving Hubert's call. When Roy saw Ethan standing opposite Hubert, his expression was quite complex, and any last shred of hope vanished.
Roy's biggest question at that moment was how Ethan had gotten involved in a conflict with Hubert. He pondered, 'Is Ethan targeting me? Or did he discover something?'
Trying to appear calm, Roy pushed through the crowd and came into view.
"Dad, you're finally here!" Hubert felt a wave of relief upon seeing Roy, as Roy always brought a sense of security.
"Mr. Wilson, what happened?" Roy ignored Hubert and approached Ethan with a frown.
"Roy, I didn't expect we'd meet again! Hubert is quite something. Why don't you ask him what happened?" Ethan said with a smile, glancing at the anxious Hubert.
"Why did you offend Mr. Wilson?" Roy demanded.
Under Roy's stern gaze, Hubert reluctantly explained what had happened. When Roy heard that Ethan had targeted Hubert because Hubert was pursuing Lyra, he felt relieved. He said to himself inwardly, 'I was overthinking it. This is just a coincidence.'
"Hubert, you're still a student. All you think about is dating. Have you forgotten what you should be doing?" Roy scolded Hubert after hearing his explanation.
"Roy, if Hubert hadn't mentioned your name, I wouldn't have known you are his dad. If I had known, I wouldn't have crushed his car." Ethan sighed helplessly.
"Mr. Wilson, you're too kind. It's my fault for spoiling Hubert. How dare he offend you!" Roy thought about Hubert's earlier behavior and felt a mix of speechlessness and fear.
He thought, 'Fortunately, Ethan has a good temper and only crushed the car. If it had been someone else, Hubert might have been in trouble.'
