Chapter 628 Actively Seeking Reconciliation
"What do you mean by that?" Dirk's heart skipped a beat, and he shot a glare at Hugo.
"Kirk played you all! Did Ethan really think his limited strength could easily defeat a top grandmaster? It's laughable!" Hugo sneered.
"Are you saying Kirk isn't dead?" Dirk's eyes widened, his face lighting up with joy.
"That's right. What just disappeared was just a puppet Kirk created! It had some of his strength and mental control, but the body wasn't strong enough, so Ethan found a chance to shatter it!" Hugo explained, not holding back.
"I should thank you, Ethan. I almost fell for Kirk's trick!" Hugo looked at Ethan and smiled, then his gaze shifted to Orla, who was glaring at him angrily, with undisguised greed in his eyes.
"Yeah, it must be the Puppet Manipulation Technique. No wonder the puppet's body was so weak. Seems like this world doesn't have good enough materials to make high-level puppets, so you took him down easily!" Angel's voice echoed in Ethan's mind.
"Don't you think saying that could really mess with our morale? We just got rid of a big problem, and now another one shows up. Think about how to deal with Hugo!" Ethan grew anxious. After the recent battles, he looked fine on the outside, but he was actually exhausted. He might still have a chance against Dirk, but against Hugo, he had no confidence at all.
"I know what you're thinking. Honestly, infusing my spiritual power into your body like that drained me too. I don't know how long it'll take to recover, so don't count on me doing it again!" Angel saw through Ethan's thoughts and spoke frankly.
Ethan's heart sank. It seemed he had been too optimistic, and now even Angel couldn't be relied upon. But even so, Ethan still pretended to be indifferent and sneered at Hugo, "No need to thank me. I didn't expect you to have some insight, seeing that Kirk was just a puppet!"
"You figured it out too?" Hugo looked at Ethan, surprised.
"Of course, did you really think you were the smartest person in the world? Not only did I see that Kirk was a puppet, but I also know you're just a puppet too. The difference is he used a puppet he created, and you used another person's body. Am I wrong?" Ethan looked at the cross in Hugo's hand, which was still glowing, and sneered dismissively.
Hugo's expression darkened, clearly not expecting Ethan to discover his secret. "Are you Ethan?" Hugo asked calmly.
"Seems like I'm quite famous in Cross Christianity! Who are you?" Ethan chuckled and asked bluntly.
"Indeed, young and fearless. I quite admire that!" Hugo chuckled and then said expressionlessly, "Since you've figured it out, I might as well tell you directly. I am Salvatore, the third leader of Cross Christianity! We'll have many opportunities to interact in the future!"
Hearing this, Ethan thought, 'Does that imply that Salvatore never intended to kill me today, or that he simply can't? If he wanted to kill me, he wouldn't be talking about the future.'
"It's a pity you got Moonhowl! But don't get too happy. Both Kirk and Cross Christianity are very interested in Moonhowl. Even if you have it now, let's see if you can keep it!" Salvatore let out a weird laugh, then turned and left swiftly, leaving Dirk and Ethan stunned.
They didn't expect Salvatore to just expose Kirk's puppet, throw out some threats, and then leave without doing anything else. The tense atmosphere turned into an eerie silence.
Dirk, who had been freaking out over Kirk's sudden death, now looked thoughtful after learning it was just a puppet. Ethan didn't act rashly either, but he had no intention of letting Dirk off easy.
"Ethan, I must say you've surprised everyone, including me! How about we end today's matter here?" After a long pause, Dirk surprisingly offered to make peace with Ethan.
This was Dirk's choice after weighing the pros and cons. Even Hugo retreated decisively when facing Ethan, let alone him. Plus, Ethan destroyed Kirk's puppet. Dirk didn't think he had the strength to do the same.
In short, there were too many mysterious aspects about Ethan, who was only at the initial master level, so Dirk decided to make peace with him. Even if Kirk pursued the matter later, he would have an excuse. After all, if even Kirk's puppet couldn't handle Ethan, what could he do?
"You're not planning to fight me for Moonhowl anymore?" Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"Master, my name is Orla!" Orla reminded Ethan with a somewhat resentful tone.
"What? She acknowledged you as her master?" Dirk was now shocked to hear Orla calling Ethan master.
"Are you jealous? Too bad your strength and character aren't up to par!" Ethan mocked dismissively.
Dirk's face turned grim. He couldn't believe Orla had been so easily tamed by Ethan. At the same time, Dirk felt relieved about his choice. Given the current situation, a truce seemed the best option. He couldn't beat either Ethan or Orla, let alone both of them together.
"You've won this time, but don't get too happy. Kirk is determined to get Orla, and you destroyed his puppet. He won't let you off!" Dirk warned Ethan seriously, clearly not happy about the situation.
"I think you should worry more about yourself right now!" Ethan sneered.
"What do you mean? I've already decided not to trouble you. Do you still want to fight to the death?" Dirk's heart sank.
At that moment, Orla suddenly tensed up, looking up at the increasingly round and bright moon in the sky, as if sensing something.
"What's wrong?" Ethan immediately frowned and asked Orla.
However, Orla seemed entranced by the moon, not responding to Ethan. Then, to Ethan's surprise, she leaped back to the giant rock at the mountain's peak and began howling at the golden moon.
