Chapter 463 Dust Settles
"Mr. Torres, why are you here?" Gary's eyes nearly popped out of his head. He'd been on the fence about calling Robert for backup, but here he was, invited by the enemy. Talk about a plot twist.
What really messed with Gary's head was how Robert was all respectful towards Ethan. That was a real gut punch.
"Are you seriously asking me that, Gary? What kind of Bankgok defense officer are you?" Robert looked like he was ready to pop a cap in him.
"Mr. Torres, there's gotta be some mistake here, right?" Gary was sweating bullets now, totally freaked out.
Ivan and Enrique were already toast, taken out by Ethan without a second thought. No way was Gary gonna risk his neck for two dead guys and go against Robert. Even if he wanted to, he didn't have the guts or the muscle for it!
"No mistake." Robert didn't even hesitate, just kicked Gary to the ground.
A bunch of armed soldiers swooped in and pinned Gary down.
"You check out the info I sent?" Ethan asked, cool as a cucumber, eyes narrowed.
"Yeah, Mr. Wilson. I can't believe this crap went down in Bankgok. Total fail on my part! Don't worry, I'll dig into this and make sure the people of Bankgok get some answers." Robert couldn't even look Ethan in the eye, sweat dripping down his face. He could feel Ethan's anger like a heatwave.
"I took care of Ivan and Enrique, but their evil deeds can't be wiped clean just by their deaths. You better handle the rest right. I don't wanna see this kind of stuff in your turf again. Last warning," Ethan said, voice like ice.
"Totally, Ivan and Enrique had it coming. If you hadn't done it, I would've. The evidence you gave me is enough to fry them a hundred times over." Robert kept his head down, barely breathing, like a mouse in front of a lion.
"Those two, and anyone else tied to them, don't let any of them slip away. I'll be watching." Ethan pointed at Gary and Jimmy, making sure Robert got the message.
"Got it, I'll take care of it and make sure you and the people of Bankgok get some answers. Plus, Jared's wrongful conviction will be cleared up in the media to set the record straight." Robert knew the whole deal and nodded like a bobblehead.
"I don't need to spell it out for you; you know the drill better than I do. Jared's name needs to be cleared. Your screw-up shouldn't ruin his rep. Shouldn't the state also make it up to Jared for what he went through?" Ethan reminded him.
"Absolutely, Jared got a raw deal. Clearing his name and compensating him is the least we can do." Robert wiped the sweat off his forehead, nodding like crazy.
"Alright, I'll leave the rest to you. Jared just got out of the slammer; we need to give him a proper welcome back." Ethan patted Robert on the shoulder, then turned to Jared and the others with a smile. "It's all sorted. Jared, Gerald, ready to head back?"
Gerald and Jared were still reeling. Ethan's sudden takedown, Robert showing up, and Gary's instant downfall—it all happened way too fast. They could hardly believe it.
"Let's chat in the car," Jessie quickly nudged Gerald and his family.
Even after piling into the car, Gerald's family was still shell-shocked from the whirlwind of events.
Ethan and Jessie exchanged a knowing look, realizing they just had to let them process it all.
"Mr. Torres, please, you gotta help me. My family still..." Gary was straight-up terrified now. After Ethan and the crew left, he dropped to his knees, begging Robert.
"Help you? I'm about to raid your house and the Coleman family! You think I didn't know about your dirty dealings in Bankgok all these years? I just didn't think you'd be this ruthless. If you were just corrupt, you might've kept your life. But you teamed up with Ivan and Enrique to commit murder, and you expect me to save you?" Robert kicked Gary over before he could finish.
Seeing Robert's serious intent, Gary's face went pale. He knew he was done for.
"Mr. Torres, can you at least tell me, who the hell is this Ethan?" Gary croaked out.
"Someone you should never mess with. Even I have to watch my step around him. Who do you think you are to cross him? Blame yourself for your evil deeds, and blame Ivan and Enrique." Robert snorted, showing zero sympathy for Gary, who didn't deserve any.
Back at Smith Village, Ethan's car pulled up in front of Gerald's house.
As soon as Ethan and Jessie got out, they saw the Smith family getting out of the car behind them, dropping to their knees.
"Gerald, Emily, what are you doing?" Jessie was startled and rushed over.
"If it weren't for you and Ethan today, we wouldn't have cleared our names, let alone come back alive," Jared said seriously, staring at Ethan.
"Get up, Jared." Ethan sighed, and then Jared felt a force lifting him off the ground, like magic.
"Ethan." Jared looked at Ethan in amazement, eyes wide with awe.
"We're family. No need for thanks. Even though we only met a couple of times when I was a kid, you're still my cousin. How could I not help you?" Ethan said with a smile.
"Gerald, Emily, it's my bad. I should've come back to see you guys a long time ago," Jessie said, full of regret.
She thought if she had come back to look after the Smith family after Carl and Nicole died, Gerald's family wouldn't have ended up like this.
"How can this be your fault?" Gerald said, looking anxious.
"Alright, the past is the past. We need to look forward and think about our future. Jared's back now, isn't this a happy ending?" Ethan couldn't stand the heavy mood and tried to lighten things up.
