Chapter 223 Merrick's Choice
Ethan had just walked out of the hall with Lyra and the other girls when he saw her father, Merrick, approaching.
"Mr. Wilson, can we talk?" This time, Merrick directly asked Ethan in front of Lyra and others no longer avoiding the topic.
"You all wait for me at the entrance," Ethan said, then turned back to Merrick, curious about what he wanted to discuss.
Once the girls had walked away, Merrick said, "Ethan, I left you my number last time. I thought you would contact me directly."
"Is there something you need, Merrick? We're all family here, so say it," Ethan asked straightforwardly.
"I want to collaborate with you," Merrick revealed as he hesitated for a moment, sensing that Ethan was deliberately keeping his distance.
"Merrick, you must be joking," Ethan remarked and chuckled upon hearing this.
"What I mean is a personal collaboration between us, unrelated to the family," Merrick quickly clarified.
"Is that really necessary?" Ethan questioned as he raised an eyebrow.
"Absolutely. As you can see, Cherry and Munro don't like you and even hold hostility towards you. Although Percival supports you, he can't fully manage many things. Even if Percival is capable, he still needs Cherry and Munro to execute many tasks, which will cause you considerable trouble," Merrick reminded him, seriously.
"So, Merrick, are you willing to help me solve these troubles?" Ethan asked with a smile.
"I know what you're thinking, and that's not my intention. When Percival was sick, I did consider competing with Munro for the inheritance. But now that Percival is back and with you around, I don't think Percival will have any issues for a while. I'm not crazy enough to go against Munro!" Merrick gritted his teeth as he spoke, showing his utmost sincerity to Ethan.
"I don't quite understand!" Ethan remarked. He was genuinely surprised. He thought Merrick would ask for his support to become the future head of the Miller family and offer him some promises.
"I just want to secure my share, including what will be left for my son in the future! That shouldn't be too much to ask. You can see Cherry and Munro's personalities. I've always played the role of a follower around them. Even after Percival got sick, I was almost reduced to the family's butler. They won't give me any real power," Merrick explained as he laid out his predicament, his tone full of resentment.
Ethan was stunned; he hadn't expected Merrick's life in the Miller family to be so difficult! But thinking about Munro and the strong-willed Cherry, he wasn't surprised.
"If you really want a chance to prove your abilities, I do have a way. But don't count on Everglow City," Ethan stated. He was silent for a moment, then thoughtfully came up with a plan.
"You mean, you want me to leave Everglow City?" Merrick inquired, staring intently at Ethan, full of astonishment.
He thought, 'The Miller family's main assets and core are in Everglow City. Although they have investments in other provinces and cities, those are merely external investments without any actual management. How much could I achieve if I managed the Miller family's assets in other regions? At least in Everglow City, I could still be involved with the family's core assets!'
"If you truly have no intention of competing for the main position and are only thinking about your son, does it matter? Chloe is a girl and has no brothers. In your son's generation, as long as he is capable, the main position could very well be his!" Ethan reminded him with a smile.
"But if I leave Everglow City, where can I go?" Merrick's face turned grim as he asked.
"Novaria! If you're willing, you can go to Novaria. I've already discussed it with Percival; we will establish a branch office in Novaria and set up a research institute as the new company's R&D base. If you go to Novaria, I can arrange a suitable position for you. Additionally, Chloe and Sarah will also be working at the Novaria branch!" Ethan explained his plan.
If Merrick truly had no intention of vying for the main leadership role, Ethan was willing to help him out of respect for Chloe.
"The Novaria branch!" Merrick remarked excitedly. He was immediately tempted!
His interest wasn't just because of the opportunity presented but of Ethan himself.
Merrick was well aware of Ethan's standing between the Miller family and the Harris family and was impressed by his capabilities. Establishing a connection with Ethan, or even just maintaining good relations with Chloe and Sarah, could ensure his future success.
Seeing Merrick's hesitation, Ethan smiled and said, "Don't rush to agree. Take your time to think it over. Once you've made up your mind, you can have Chloe call me anytime."
"Alright, I'll give you my answer as soon as I've thought it through!" Merrick replied while he nodded heavily in agreement.
When Ethan walked out of the Miller family mansion, he saw the three girls standing outside, discussing something. As soon as they saw him, all three pairs of eyes focused on him.
"Is there something on my face? Why are you all looking at me like that?" Ethan asked, touching his face in confusion.
"Ethan, what did Merrick just say to you?" Chloe asked curiously.
"Nothing much. He just wanted to know if there was a position for him in our newly established company," Ethan casually answered. He didn't hide the matter; there was nothing to hide.
"My dad wants to work for you?" Lyra's eyes widened upon hearing this.
"Don't put it that way. The new company also has a share of the Miller family. Your dad wants to contribute to the Miller family. I'll arrange for him to go to the Novaria branch." Ethan shared his thoughts in front of Chloe.
In fact, splitting the new company into two parts, one in Everglow City and one in Novaria, had its advantages. It allowed Ethan to make strategic choices. The core of the future company, which was the research institute in Novaria, had to be under his control.
With the right people in the Novaria branch, even if something happened between the Miller family and the Harris family, he wouldn't have to worry too much.
Although Merrick was Munro's younger brother, placing him in Novaria meant Ethan didn't have to be overly cautious. Merrick was more suitable than others for this role.
First of all, he was indeed capable, and second, he wouldn't be on the same side as Munro, eliminating some potential risks.
"Are you planning to use Merrick to counter my parents?" Chloe inquired, she immediately understood Ethan's strategy.
"Don't make it sound so harsh. I'm just making the most appropriate choice," Ethan explained with a wry smile.
"If my dad goes to Novaria, what about my mom and me? My brother and I are still studying in Everglow City!" Lyra asked anxiously. She was stunned upon hearing this. She was very attached to her father, which was evident from her attitude. Their relationship was much better than Chloe and Munro's. In this regard, Ethan preferred Merrick more.
"It's not like going to Novaria means he can't come back. We're all family, working for the same company, so there will definitely be frequent trips back and forth. If you want to go to Novaria, you can still go," Sarah said with a laugh.
"That's true!" Lyra replied, realizing she didn't need to worry about it, and laughed awkwardly.
