Chapter 317 Let Fate Decide
Ethan was floored by Jesse's response. Man, this guy was persistent!
"Not scared I'll kill you right now?" Ethan's face darkened as he threatened.
"You saved my life. If you want to take it back, I won't complain," Jesse said, getting up from the bed.
Gotta admit, Ethan's medical skills were top-notch. Jesse still had some internal injuries, but he could move just fine.
"You should rest. I can talk to Ronald and get you a place to recover. You've hit rock bottom, so why not just give up?" Ethan was baffled by Jesse's willingness to risk his life for those two beads.
But honestly, compared to Ronald and Larry, Jesse was more tolerable.
"Wherever you go, I go!" Jesse shook his head, refusing.
"Are you nuts? I'm serious. If you don't rest, even if you get your strength back, you might suffer permanent damage. You might never reach master level again. You sure about this?" Ethan rolled his eyes, reminding him again.
Jesse stubbornly shook his head.
"Why are you so stubborn? How did you end up being chased by thugs for money when I met you in the capital? Were you really looking for a lady?" Ethan couldn't help but admire Jesse's determination and asked curiously.
Jesse looked shocked, then his pale face turned red.
"Wait, is it true?" Ethan was particularly curious if Jesse had actually sought out a lady.
"Well..." Jesse stammered.
"Did you ?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, pressing on, clearly not letting it go.
"This... there's a misunderstanding. I can't explain it right now. Just keep it a secret and don't bring it up again!" Jesse was clearly embarrassed.
Ethan found Jesse's embarrassed look amusing, thinking he wasn't so annoying after all, but rather endearing.
"If you don't want me to ask, then stop following me. Otherwise, every time you show up, I'll ask until you tell me!" Ethan, having found Jesse's 'weakness,' wasn't about to let it go and threatened him.
"Why do you have to make things difficult for me?" Jesse asked, his breath catching, his face full of helplessness.
"You're the one making things difficult for me," Ethan reminded him earnestly.
"Fine. After completing the task, I'll accept punishment!" Jesse seemed to have an epiphany and made a decision that left Ethan dumbfounded!
Seeing Jesse's sad and resigned look, Ethan felt a bit embarrassed to keep pushing.
"Alright, let's drop it. By the way, you mentioned your master sent you. Who is your master?" Ethan waved his hand, trying to change the subject.
Jesse just shook his head slowly, clearly not planning to spill the beans.
"Not saying again? I'm your savior, remember? How do you expect to make friends like this?" Ethan complained, feeling exasperated.
"Friends?" Jesse pondered. It was the second time he'd heard the word from Ethan, but it seemed like he didn't really know what a friend was.
"Don't tell me you don't even know what a friend is. Do you not have any friends?" Ethan asked, amazed at Jesse's contemplative look.
"I know what a friend means... but I've never had one. Since childhood, apart from my master, I've only had my fellow disciples. I've never made any friends," Jesse explained earnestly.
"Then your master and your fellow disciples must all be as clueless as you!" Ethan rolled his eyes, unsure whether to feel sorry for Jesse.
"How did you know?" Jesse looked surprised, as Ethan's casual remark had hit the mark.
"Just by looking at you! If there were anyone normal around you, they wouldn't have raised someone who knows nothing but to follow the master's words," Ethan explained.
"Isn't it right to follow the master's words?" Jesse asked instinctively.
"I'm not saying it's wrong to follow the master, but as an individual, shouldn't you have your own opinions? Are you telling me that even at your age, you still need the master to tell you what's right and what to do?" Ethan asked, lost for words.
But Jesse was stubborn and wasn't about to change his ingrained beliefs because of a few words from Ethan.
"I don't quite understand. Isn't the master supposed to teach and enlighten? It's only natural to listen to him!" Jesse shook his head repeatedly, clearly not taking Ethan's words to heart.
"Forget it. I can't explain it to you. Let's make a bet." Ethan came up with another idea.
"A bet?" Jesse looked puzzled.
"Didn't you say you can't disobey your master's orders? Which is more powerful, the fate or your master?" Ethan asked with a smile.
"Of course, the fate is more powerful and even more unchangeable!" Jesse nodded as if it were obvious.
"Then why don't we let fate decide our matters?" Ethan raised an eyebrow and asked.
