Chapter 139: Chloe Miller's Despair

Sarah betted that Bennit would get upset if he realized Clarence and Ethan were tricking him right now. Even if the Walker Family avoided contact with the four major families, shouldn't they be grateful for a life being saved?

They owed Ethan and the Harris family a favor. How could they feel right about not helping out in a time of need?

The young guy and the old man were as cunning as foxes, and Sarah had to admit that their cleverness impressed her.

"Where are we heading to? We can't move too far, but we also can't stay in Novaria."

Sarah's thoughts shifted instantly to her upcoming trip with Ethan.

"I purchased two tickets to Eastshore Isle for some beach leisure, but Ethan is worried that he could be seen by the military on a flight, so he proposed taking a pleasant drive somewhere. You two can work it out yourselves!"

Clarence laughed and added that he was quite happy with Ethan's approach this time.

He would have a strong case to convince Chuck Townsend, the boss, to take Ethan under his wing if he could use this to create an implicit alliance with Ethan.

Sarah asked with her eyes focused on Ethan, "Have you already made a decision?"

"I do want to visit a location in the coming days. However, it's not for leisure. I can go by myself if you find it boring," Ethan said indifferently.

"Absolutely not, don't even think of leaving on your own. Don't you dare leave me behind, wherever you're heading to! Anyway, where are you planning to go?"

Sarah made a somewhat humorous warning face, pouting as she demanded.

"I'm heading to Baytown."

Ethan revealed his future trip without hiding it.

Anyhow, that was all part of his scheme. He had to make this journey even if it had nothing to do with his business with the Harris family.

But in Baytown, there was something very important waiting for him.

"Baytown? That's toward Houston, right? What's so important there? It'll take us at least two and a half days to get there if we drive." Sarah murmured, looking puzzled while even Clarence's look was full of curiosity.

"It's personal. Once we arrive, you'll understand. It really doesn't affect anyone else but me," Ethan said, anxious to move on from the subject.

Clarence didn't question Ethan behind his visit to Baytown as they could tell he was reluctant to elaborate.

All Clarence did was urge him to be careful with Sarah and to stay in touch.

Ethan nodded quickly.

On the other hand, the Miller family was located in far-off Houston, thousands of miles away.

Since her return, Chloe Miller had seldom been outside her room. Her mother had forcefully taken away her phone, cutting her off from any communication with the outside world.

In a few of days, Chloe had become noticeably more pale and thinner. Her beautiful face was marked by fatigue.

"Give it up. That boy hasn't texted or even given you a call! Do you still think he's worthy of your love?" Her mother's tone was harsh with mockery.

The door suddenly opened. Chloe's mother, Vivian Miller, walked right in and threw her phone onto the large bed. She obviously no longer thought it was worthwhile to deny her child access to her phone.

"Isn't all my fault, right? He must be furious, no?" Without even glancing at the returning gadget, Chloe muttered softly.

"Furious? That boy's probably having the time of his life. He's all cuddled up with Sarah now! Moreover, it seems like they've even announced it, and even Clarence seems to agree. Although he's only been gone for a few days, he's already found someone else, and it's even your best friend! Do you still think he's worth it?"
Vivian gave a disdainful sneer.

"They're together at last, huh? Maybe it's not such a bad result." Chloe showed no signs of disappointment. She paused, then bowed her head as grief filled her face.

"In any case, you have no connection to that man anymore from now on. Just stay put at home. John Ashton is arriving in a few days to formally announce the engagement, so I want you to be the best version of yourself when you meet him. After all, only a man like John Ashton is suitable for a Miller heiress!" Vivian's voice was stern with no room for negotiation.

"I want to sleep now, so please leave." Chloe replied emotionlessly, clearly not interested in further talks as she covered herself with the blanket.

"I'll get several outfits made for you by renowned designers. Since you're exhausted, get some rest," Vivian said, annoyed. Mustering her composure, she turned and walked out of Chloe's room.

Chloe was lying in bed as she stared at the wall, reliving every romantic moment she had with Ethan. Tears uncontrollably ran down her cheeks.

A long time passed before there was a knock on the door.

With a hint of annoyance in her voice, Chloe wiped the tears from her face. "I said I wanted to relax, didn't I? Let me have some peace, please."

"Miss, it's me!"

Greg's voice could be heard through the door.

As soon as she heard the voice, she sprung from her bed and opened her bedroom door.

"Greg, what brings you here?"

When she saw that she was the only one at the door, she couldn't help but ask.

"Your mother has given you permission to go out, Miss. Obviously, we're free to see you right now."

Greg explained, smiling with a strain.

She had watched Chloe grow up. She felt a twinge of grief in her heart as she looked at Chloe’s red eyes, as though she'd just cried recently.

"Is there a solution to the issue?"

Chloe's voice sounded worried and tense.

"The Johnsons have filed for bankruptcy and were forced to leave Novaria, just as you'd hoped. They will no longer be a threat to Ethan. Moreover, that was the head of the house's decision as well. He claimed that you were doing that young guy a favor by helping him one final time. However, if you oppose..."

Greg didn't finish her sentence. She didn't need to do that; after all, Chloe knew her father's insinuations well.

It was a warning for her not to get any other ideas; a threat. If not, the Miller Family will turn Ethan into an enemy.

"Doing him a favor? Do I, his own daughter, even have any influence in front of him? I'm simply a helpless creature, powerless even in deciding her own fate. It's ridiculous to think about influence! He's only protecting the Miller family's unchangeable reputation!"

Chloe gave a scornful snort.

Given that she was only a servant, Greg couldn't argue and was clearly ashamed.

"Okay, Greg. Thank you, nevertheless of anything. Let's put a stop to this Ethan-related issue, and please don't come searching for me; I need some alone time."

Chloe sighed and told Greg what she wished.

"Okay. Take care, Miss." Greg smiled and added, "I won't bother you any longer." before nodding and leaving Chloe's room.

Then, with longing in her eyes, Chloe's gaze lingered on the three pieces of jewelry that Ethan had personally gifted her. But eventually, as if to bury her love for him, she removed them and put them into her vanity's drawer.
