Chapter 271 Must Go
Remington, who was having breakfast in the dining room, immediately put down his utensils when he saw Ethan come in and said to him, "You're just in time. I was about to see Luke. Come with me!"
"Remington, you were already prepared for this, weren't you?" Ethan laughed heartily.
"Is it that hard to guess? Once you're done with your business in Everglow City, you'll be heading back to Novaria. If you don't come to see us before you leave, you might as well not come next time!" Remington glared at Ethan angrily.
"How dare I forget you and Luke?" Ethan nodded with a wry smile.
"Alright, after breakfast, accompany me to Fragrant Garden. I'll have Bennit meet us there!" Remington got up and tidied up, then instructed Ethan.
"Bennit is coming, too?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, asking.
"Don't play dumb with me. Don't forget how you got your consultant position. Some things need to be settled, and we must brief you before you leave!" Remington explained seriously.
"I don't mind, but I'm in Novaria. I might have no time to keep running back to Everglow City," Ethan said helplessly.
"You don't need to worry about that. The military will arrange everything properly. There will be training bases in both Everglow City and Novaria, but the details must be kept confidential. You can't leak a word!" Remington warned again.
"No problem!" Ethan promised confidently.
This time, they didn't ask Lysander to drive. Ethan drove Chloe's car and took Remington directly to Fragrant Garden.
When they arrived at Courtyard No. 1, they saw Luke practicing judo in the garden. Remington and Ethan didn't disturb him, so they waited until Luke finished his routine and walked over.
"You're leaving Everglow City, aren't you?" Luke asked with a beaming smile when he saw Ethan.
"In the next few days. The matters in Everglow City are mostly settled, so it's time to return to Novaria," Ethan explained.
"It's good to go back early. The energy project you're working on with the military is a great thing for the country and the people. You must take it seriously and handle it well," Luke advised earnestly.
"Don't worry. The laboratory in Novaria is already being prepared. I believe it won't be long before it gets on track. The new energy engine system will not only benefit the civilian sector but also bring significant advantages to the military," Ethan said.
"That's good! Since you're leaving, play a game of chess with me," Luke said with relief, instructing the caretaker to bring the chessboard.
"Another game of chess?" Ethan smiled wryly.
"Don't look so reluctant. Many people would love to play chess with Luke but don't get the chance. We'll play while we wait for Bennit," Remington said as he helped set up the chessboard.
"This time, we must have a winner. Don't you dare lose on purpose again!" Luke reminded Ethan before they started.
"I'll do my best, but I'm afraid I might not be a match for you!" Ethan smiled.
As they played chess, Remington watched with great interest. Halfway through the game, Bennit appeared in the courtyard. Seeing Ethan playing chess with Luke, Bennit stood quietly by the side like Remington.
"Luke, my apologies!" The game ended with Ethan's victory. This time, Ethan didn't lose on purpose but won the game in the shortest time.
"No need to apologize. Young people should have an indomitable spirit!" Luke shook his head with a smile.
"I just saw that Bennit is already here and wanted to finish the game quickly to avoid delaying important matters," Ethan said, glancing at Bennit.
"So it's my fault? I didn't ask you to finish so quickly!" Bennit looked speechless as if Luke lost quickly because of his sudden appearance.
"Alright, Ethan is right. Let's get down to business first," Remington immediately interrupted, reminding them.
"Here are the documents for the Nightfall Brigade. Take a look." Bennit opened his briefcase and handed Ethan a file.
Ethan felt like Bennit was reporting to him, thinking to himself how tempting the feeling of power was.
"Nightfall Brigade? That's quite a bold name. How come there are 2,200 people? Didn't you say the number wouldn't exceed a thousand?" Ethan asked in surprise after reading the first page of the introduction.
"These are over 2,000 specially selected from the entire military, each with a martial arts background and the potential to become warriors. The 2,000-plus is just a pool for you to select from. The final unit will be capped at 800, meaning more than half will be eliminated," Bennit explained seriously.
"I can't guarantee that I can train 800 warriors in a short time. While I can help them create energy centers, whether they become warriors depends on their talent," Ethan reminded just as seriously.
"Just do your best. Everything has a process, and you're a warrior yourself. You should be more than qualified to be their instructor." Bennit had no intention of letting Ethan off the hook, but he was still looking to exploit him.
"Didn't we agree I'd be a consultant? How did I become an instructor?" Ethan immediately protested.
"Is there a difference? 'Consultant' is just a title; 'instructor' is the actual job. As a consultant, you're essentially their head instructor for this 2,000-plus team," Bennit explained earnestly.
"So, these 2,000-plus people have to listen to me?" Ethan's eyes lit up, his mind racing.
"Yes, but only regarding training matters. Don't even think about using them for personal gain, or the military leaders will have you court-martialed before I even get involved," Bennit warned, seeing right through Ethan's thoughts.
"You're making it sound like I'd disguise personal gain as public service. Do I look like that kind of person?" Ethan retorted.
"You'd better not be," Bennit snorted noncommittally.
"Alright, Bennit is right. Training the military is important. Don't even think about slacking off. If something goes wrong, I won't be able to protect you," Luke also advised earnestly.
"Don't worry. I would never do such a thing, and besides, I'm not going to war. What could I possibly use the military for?" Ethan promised confidently.
"When you return to Novaria, are you planning to visit Misty Ridge?" Luke suddenly changed the subject.
"Phoenix did ask me to go before she left. How did you know, Luke?" Ethan asked in surprise.
"You should go. Phoenix must have something important to tell you, something very significant to you personally," Luke said solemnly.
Ethan was surprised. Phoenix didn't make herself very clear when she left, but it was clear she had left a hint with Luke, making it impossible for Ethan not to go.
"Do you know what it's about?" Ethan asked, frowning.
"I don't know the specifics. Phoenix asked me to tell you this before she left, so it must be something important. Of course, whether you go or not is up to you. I hope you won't regret it." Luke shook his head noncommittally.
"Since you put it that way, it looks like I have to go," Ethan said with a wry smile.
He was increasingly curious about what Phoenix had to tell him, which could only be said at Misty Ridge. Why couldn't she have said it while in Everglow City?
