Chapter 282 Never Intended To Pay Up
What Ethan did not expect was that after Lyra counted those four, she seemed unsatisfied. Finally, she spread out her thumb as well and, with a flushed face, said, "Ethan, do you think I can count as one of your women, too?"
Ethan's hand slipped on the steering wheel, nearly driving the car onto the greenbelt. He immediately slammed on the brakes, causing Lyra to lurch forward and scream in fright.
Fortunately, there were no cars closely following behind, or there would have been a rear-end collision. Even so, it drew curses from the drivers of several cars behind them.
"Ethan, how are you driving? Why did you brake suddenly?" Lyra's voice was full of complaints, which made Ethan glare at her.
"It's all because of your reckless talk. I'm your brother-in-law. What are you thinking?" Ethan said irritably before starting the car again.
"I didn't know you'd react so strongly!" Lyra pouted, feeling wronged.
"If Chloe hears this, you'll never hear the end of it!" Ethan warned, rolling his eyes.
"I think you're just afraid of Chloe hearing it. Honestly, besides Chloe and Sarah, have you ever had such thoughts about other women, like Alice, right?" Lyra asked curiously, pouting.
"What's wrong with you today? Trying to get me to say something to tell Chloe, huh?" Ethan asked warily.
"Forget it, anyway. My classmates say that men are no good. I don't believe in men who can resist temptation!" Lyra lost interest when Ethan didn't respond.
Ethan smiled bitterly in his heart. Although he couldn't answer Lyra's sensitive question, he already had an answer within himself.
Ethan didn't consider himself a saint. He admitted he was affectionate but not promiscuous. He couldn't accept purely physical enjoyment without emotional involvement. He didn't love Alice or Hannah so he couldn't have sex with them.
More importantly, he had to be responsible for Chloe and Sarah. No matter how many beautiful women surrounded him, he couldn't love one after another.
With these thoughts, Ethan drove up to the entrance of the Regal Hotel.
As soon as the car stopped, Ethan saw a figure leading a group of people out of the hotel—it was Hubert.
"Lyra, I didn't expect you to really come. I thought you were joking!" Hubert's eyes were only on Lyra, instinctively treating Ethan as if he were invisible.
Seeing his affectionate manner, Lyra frowned and shrank behind Ethan.
"If Ethan hadn't agreed, I wouldn't have come!" Lyra said, clinging to Ethan's arm.
"Lyra, isn't this man your driver? How rude!" Before Hubert could say anything, a sarcastic voice came. The speaker was a young man with effeminate mannerisms.
"What nonsense! This is my boyfriend. He is not a driver." Before Ethan could react, Lyra angrily pointed at the effeminate man and scolded him.
"Lyra, even if you don't want to be with me, you should not hire an actor. I've already checked this car. It belongs to a woman named Chloe, who should be your sister, right? You claim this man is your boyfriend, but why would he be driving your sister's car?" Hubert said with a disdainful look, clearly having investigated the car Ethan was driving a few days ago.
"This is indeed my sister's car, but she lent it to us," Lyra was taken aback and then tried to defend herself vigorously, as she couldn't say that Ethan was her brother-in-law.
"Fine, even though he's not a driver, he has to borrow your sister's car. He must be a poor wretch. Such a worthless man doesn't deserve you," Hubert retorted dismissively.
"So, whoever has a better car is worthy of Lyra?" Ethan asked with a smile.
"You could say that. At least a car is a symbol of financial power. A poor man like you doesn't understand the gap between rich and poor!" Hubert sneered with contempt.
"In that case, your car must be quite impressive." Ethan nodded in agreement.
"Of course, see that car over there? It's mine, a birthday gift from my dad. You couldn't afford it in your lifetime," Hubert said proudly.
"Hubert, Don't go too far, or I'll smash your car." Lyra was furious and disgusted by Hubert's smug face, especially since he looked down on Ethan.
"Lyra, I'm just telling the truth. You're still young and don't know love. Without financial strength, how could he ever make you happy?" Hubert said, looking at Lyra with a face full of affection.
"Well, you do have a point. This car must be worth one million dollars. I really need to take a good look!" Ethan said, his eyes gleaming as he walked towards the car.
Seeing Ethan's seemingly ignorant demeanor, Hubert dismissed him even more, and the group of spoiled noble youths behind him burst into laughter.
"Never seen a sports car before, huh?"
"Being able to drive a car is already a blessing for him, and he still wants to compete with Hubert for a woman?"
"Don't touch it. Even a scratch on the paint is more than you can afford!"
The mocking voices were relentless, and they were particularly grating to Lyra's ears. She couldn't understand how Ethan could hold it out.
Just as she was about to lose her temper, she heard another collective gasp, followed by a loud crash. She saw Ethan actually jump onto the hood of the car.
The hood immediately caved in, and she heard Ethan click his tongue and say, "This is a million-dollar sports car? It's so flimsy. It's way worse than mine!"
"You bastard, this is my brand-new car, my birthday gift!" Hubert's eyes turned red as he looked at his car's miserable state, on the verge of tears. Who would have thought Ethan would have the guts to damage his new car?
"Sorry, I just wanted to test how sturdy it was. With such a fragile body, if you got into an accident, you'd be dead. I'm saving your life, so you don't need to thank me!" Ethan jumped out of the car and said earnestly.
"You're done for! You couldn't pay for it anyway!" Hubert felt his heart bleeding and glared at Ethan with gritted teeth.
"Really? But I never intended to pay," Ethan said innocently, blinking his eyes.
