Chapter 1018 A Thief
Mr. Ramsey introduced everyone present to his wife one by one.
Finally, he looked at everyone. "Let me introduce you. This is my wife, Elsie."
Jameson and Lauren quickly stepped forward and greeted her politely. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Ramsey."
Mrs. Ramsey appeared to be in her forties. Her face was a touch pale and gaunt, but her facial features were quite delicate. She should have been a stunning beauty when she was younger.
She smiled and said, "It's cold outside. Come in and have a chat!"
As she spoke, she twisted her body to let them in.
Then, they entered the house. The heater warmed the entire house up. Afterward, Mrs. Ramsey told the servants to come up and grab their coats.
Since Clarissa and the rest came out in a hurry, they were still dressed in their formal attire from the banquet, with a coat on the outside.
Fortunately, the house was warm, and they wouldn't be cold even without their coats. Thus, they took it off.
"What's going on? Isn't the jade home all this time? Why is it gone all of a sudden?" Mr. Ramsey anxiously asked.
Speaking of this, Mrs. Ramsey didn't look too good.
"I don't know what happened either. It has always been there, and no one has ever moved it. You just called for me to open the safe to get it out. But when I opened it, I found that they were gone."
In an instant, Mr. Ramsey's expression became clouded.
"I'd like to check it out."
So, a group of people went to the second floor.
Jade of Heaven had previously been kept in the safe box.
Even though it was quite likely to be a fake in Mr. Ramsey's opinion, he believed it was a good piece of jade.
As a result, Mr. Ramsey kept it in the safe box.
It was placed in the bedroom on the second floor.
When a group of people arrived, they discovered that the safe box had been opened with some cash and documents inside. There was a black velvet box next to it. However, there was nothing inside it.
Without hesitation, Mr. Ramsey strode forward and picked up the box.
"Did you put Jade of Heaven in this box before?" Clarissa inquired.
Mr. Ramsey nodded.
His demeanor didn't seem well. He examined the box several times before turning his attention to the safe box within. "Is the box open when you first see it?" he inquired, his voice low.
Mrs. Ramsey shook her head.
"It wasn't open; it was locked. I was ready to pull out the jade since I thought it was inside. But I noticed that the box was significantly lighter when I picked it up. Then I realized something wasn't quite right. I wasn't expecting to see it missing when I opened it."
Mr. Ramsey's face became glum almost instantly.
Mrs. Ramsey had been married to him for nearly twenty years and could be completely trustable. But apart from the two of them, the servants weren't allowed to enter the bedroom without permission. So, where did the jade go?
Thinking of this, he turned to look at Jara.
"Mr. Holland, I'm really sorry. I thought I could help you, but now..."
Jara raised his hand and interrupted him.
"Nobody expected this to happen. I believe in your good intentions. Now that it is gone, if you are willing to, we will help you to find it back."
Lebbey nodded his head.
"Of course, I'd like to, but... how do we find it?"
He was a good businessman, but he had no idea how to catch the thief.
Jara then turned his gaze to Mrs. Ramsey.
"Can you tell me when you guys put the jade in?"
Mrs. Ramsey answered softly, "It had been a long time. Roughly five years ago."
"Has it been inside the whole time?"
"No." Mr. Ramsey added, "We do business and own properties everywhere. This is just one of them. I live here since I sometimes have to stay here for a long time for business. When I think of the jade, I'll occasionally take it out to play, though it's not much."
"If you remember, Mr. Ramsey, when was the last time you saw it?"
"About... three days ago?"
With some thought, Mr. Ramsey went on to say hesitantly, "At that time, I wanted to give it to Elicia for her, but then I remembered it was fake and was afraid it would bring her bad luck. So, I put it back."
"That is to say, the jade was lost within these three days. Has anyone else entered the house in the past three days?"
"No."
Mrs. Ramsey replied, "Only Dick and I live here. We don't have any children, so no one else will come here. The servants are usually upstairs. Besides, I personally manage the bedrooms and the study rooms on the second floor. Outsiders are not allowed to enter."
Lauren exclaimed with a chuckle, "That's strange. Can it vanish into thin air if no one came in?"
"It's totally impossible for it to disappear just like that."
"Only the two of you know the password to this safe box?" Jara inquired as he came forward and carefully checked the safe box.
"No, my nephew knows it too since he helped us set up the safe box. We have no children, so we treat him as if he were our own. That's why we didn't hide it from him. Well, in the event of an accident, he could be able to assist us with certain things."
Hearing this, Jara nodded.
He checked the safe box first, then went outside to inspect the bedroom door.
Not knowing what he was looking at, Emmeline glanced at him curiously.
Jara asked, "Where's your nephew now?"
"Oh, he's at Mrs. Ethanbez's birthday banquet."
"He went to the banquet as well?" Lauren was surprised.
"What's his name? I don't think I've seen any new faces today."
After all, she had been married to Jameson for so long and had met all of the Ethanbez family's relatives. Moreover, she had an excellent memory.
Not to mention whether she could remember everyone's name, at least she could remember faces that she had seen before.
Mrs. Ramsey said doubtfully, "You've not seen him? It's impossible. He personally informed me that he would be attending."
"May I ask your nephew's name?" Jameson asked.
"His name is Benson Melton."
Benson?
Lauren and Jameson looked at each other.
It was, after all, a birthday celebration. All of the attendees were expected to bring gifts.
When receiving gifts, they would usually jot down the names of the guests.
As Elicia's only grandchild, Jameson naturally glanced over the list.
