Chapter 727 They Are Lying

"What?"
Nora was stunned and propped herself up in bed.
Once again, Clarissa pushed hard to open the door, but still, the door didn't budge. It was then she knew she was not mistaken—the door was indeed locked from the outside.
Frustrated and angry, she turned and walked back to the bed, ranting pensively,
"Things are looking bad. I suspect they found out that we are not who we say we are."
Nora was equally frustrated and whinged, "Oh no. What should we do?"
Before she answered, Clarissa thought for a while.
"Let's not rush. Let's see what they are up to first. If it turns out bad, then..."
If it turned out bad, then it would be a head-on fight.
Even when the situation turned for the worse, Nora and she must not separate at all cost.
Suddenly, Clarissa remembered the piece of paper that she hid in the corner of the bed. She took it out and examined the map that she had drawn on the paper. When she was done, she folded it and put it in her pocket.
Softly, she proposed to Nora, "I think we won't be able to get out tonight. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Tomorrow morning, remember to act like we don't know that the door is locked from the outside. Act normal. If things turn bad, we'll knock them out, tie them, and flee from here."
However, Nora had her doubts, "Didn't you say that this won't work? The neighbors will help them capture us."
Clarissa sighed, "That was then. Now, the situation is different. We have no choice but to take the risk."
As she spoke, she began to pack together a few of the essential items that they needed.
She explained further, "At that time, we thought that we have a month for you to recover from your fracture. Now things are different as they have found out our true identities."
"They will try to get rid of us as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary trouble. That will be dangerous for us. We must make contingencies immediately to avert the danger."
Nora nodded in agreement.
When Clarissa was done with packing, she heaved a huge sigh of relief.
Then, she ground the flowers that she picked in the morning into a fine powder. She gave Nora a small bag of the powder and kept one for herself.
She said, "I don't know if this concoction will work. Just keep it. If it doesn't work, use it as lime powder."
Nora nodded, then suddenly drew out a small knife from under her pillow.
The knife gave Clarissa a shock.
"Where did you get this?"
Nora said nonchalantly, "It's always with me."
Her answer left Clarissa dumbstruck.
"How can you have a knife on you without me knowing? I have been sleeping next to you all this while."
Her innocent question brought a smile to Nora's face, "Of course, you won't notice it because it is hidden in the most secretive place. The knife is small but unfolded to be a dagger. I have this specially made. It fits nicely in the waistband without anyone noticing."
Clarissa nodded.
With a small weapon with them, Clarissa felt more secure.
Then, she told Nora, "We'll play it by ear tomorrow. Don't be impulsive."
Nora nodded, "Yes, I understand."
With their discussion completed, they knew that there was no use to continue to feel fretful, and they could only wait for what the morning would bring.
After chatting a while longer, they went to sleep.
Meanwhile, things were also happening in the room downstairs.
Beside the bed by the light of a small oil lamp, Aunt Emma was mending clothes.
With his pipe in his mouth, Uncle Jasper paced up and down the room restlessly.
After he strolled back and forth more than a few rounds, Aunt Emma finally looked up and grumbled, "Quit pacing. You're making me dizzy. I can't see clearly."
Immediately, Uncle Jasper stopped and asked coldly, "Did the two girls do anything different today?"
Aunt Emma continued to mend the clothes with her head bowed and answered, "What can be different? After all, they are just two rich, pampered young ladies from the city with only romance and love in their heads. What else can there be?"
Uncle Jasper snorted coldly.
"Don't be fooled by them. I'm telling you they are not some ordinary rich, pampered ladies from the city!"
His sharp retort shocked Aunt Emma.
She looked up in confusion.
Meanwhile, Uncle Jasper was back to pacing the floor.
It was a long while before he continued, "Some outsiders came to the village today."
That was a surprise to Aunt Emma, so she asked,
"Outsiders? Who are they?"
"Humph, who else?" Uncle Jasper replied coldly, "They're here to look for these girls."
The news left Aunt Emma stunned.
Sharp pain in her finger snapped her back to reality as she accidentally poked herself with the needle.
Grunting in pain, she quickly sucked on her finger to get rid of the bloodstain, and then said, "They managed to find here so quickly."
Uncle Jasper looked uncertain as he turned and added,
"They are not ordinary folks. That's why they are here so fast. Do you know what they are carrying?"
His question confused her as she stared blankly and asked in return, "What are they carrying?"
"Guns!"
"What?"
With a surprised yelp, she covered her chest in fear as she turned pale.
His pacing was getting more and more furious as Uncle Jasper looked more and more worried.
"These two girls are not telling the truth. If they are just ordinary women, why would armed men be looking for them? Maybe they are spies from the frontline where the war is raging. It isn't easy for us to flee from the war and find a peaceful place to stay. We stay safely hidden in this small village. No one can destroy this peace that we enjoyed. We must get rid of these girls as soon as possible!"
His rough talk disturbed Aunt Emma as she lowered her head and asked,
"What can we do? Didn't you promise to sell them to Albert and the others?"
"I can't anymore."
As he was saying this, Uncle Jasper suddenly paused for a while before continuing in a hoarse voice, "Albert and the others are from our village. If those men found the ladies here, that would be a disaster for us. We must find ways to sell them somewhere else."
Aunt Emma frowned in deep thought.
Looking at her husband, she suggested,
"Why don't we just let them go? We will not only avoid trouble but also..."
"Nonsense!"
Uncle Jasper interrupted before she could finish.
Angrily, he turned and faced her, "The money is in the pocket. How can I let them go? They are worth tens of thousands enough to feed us for a few years. If we let them go, will there be another such opportunity?"
He continued coldly, "Besides, they crash-landed here on their own. I did not trick or drag them here. We cannot reject such rich gifts delivered to our doorsteps."
