Chapter 529 She's Got A Lot Of Guts
What on earth did she do wrong?
Sophia's cell phone suddenly rang. Without thinking twice, she knew it was from her home.
They must have called her after ascertaining the authenticity of the marriage certificate! Otherwise, they wouldn't wait until now to call her.
The sadness in Sophia's heart grew even more intense. She took out her phone and hung up without checking. Then she turned off her phone.
Watching the screen go completely dark, Sophia felt a bit more comfortable. She got up from the sand, picked up her backpack, and headed back.
On the other side, the Buick family.
"I'm sorry. The number you have dialed is not reachable. Please try it later."
Collin's expression changed slightly as the intercept message came from the phone.
Oh no. Just now, he was able to get through it but now, Sophia had turned off her phone. She must be so pissed with him!
He hung up angrily.
With the marriage certificate in her hand, Bell still couldn't believe it. "Dad, do you think this is real?"
Collin glared at her and said, "We have already checked with the Civil Affairs Bureau. What do you think?"
Bell was speechless.
......
The moon glowed in the sky. It was already late at night.
Sophia walked slowly until she reached the roadside. As this was a coastal area, there were not many cars and pedestrians at night, so she waited for a long time because she was able to hail a cab.
She got into the car and told the driver, "Go to the Aegean Villa Park."
After thinking for a while, she turned on her mobile phone and was ready to call Jem Kilney.
Jem was her high school classmate. She came from a well-off family and had a fiery temper. The two of them were very close at school. Jem was the one who always stood by her side, even at her most difficult time two year ago. Hence, apart from the Buick family, Jem was the only one who knew of her return to the country.
Nevertheless, as soon as Sophia found her number, her cell phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID was a series of unfamiliar digits.
Sophia frowned slightly. She got a new number when she returned to Ascijan. No one knew about it except Collin.
Collin must have found that he couldn't get through with her phone, so he had tried calling her another number.
Sophia sneered. After hesitating for a second, she hung up the phone.
She didn't want to go home right now, as she didn't want to hear any snarky remarks from them!
However, as soon as she hung up, the phone call came in again.
She hung up again.
Another one came.
Again, she hung up.
Three minutes later, the mobile phone was still ringing tirelessly, as if it would not stop until it was connected.
Sophia was speechless. Couldn't these people just leave her alone?
She was a little angry, but at the same time, she also felt that they went too far. Wasn't it enough for them to scold her at home?
Sophia gritted her teeth, answered the call, and yelled at the phone, "That's enough! Stop calling! I'm telling you, I won't admit to things that I have never done! I won't listen to your nonsense anymore!"
After that, she hung up the phone.
At the other end of the phone.
Standing on the spacious balcony and looking at the screen that had been faded to black, Roland was stunned for a moment.
Following that, his facial expression darkened.
This woman! Forget it if she didn't pick up his call. How dare she yell at him like that?
"She's got a lot of guts!"
Just as he was about to call again, he suddenly remembered what Sophia had said just now. What did she mean when she said she won't admit to things that she had never done before?
What had she done?
When Roland realized that something was off, his brows twitched and he gave up on calling Sophia. Instead, he called Collin.
The phone rang twice and was connected. "Hello!"
Roland was not in the mood to beat around the bush with Collin. He came straight to the point and asked, "Where's Sophia?"
The person on the other end of the line seemed to be stunned and asked, "Who are you?"
"Roland."
......
Sophia arrived at the Aegean Villa Park soon.
The Aegean Villa Park was a high-class villa park for the wealthy. She couldn't enter it without an access card, so she could only wait outside.
She called Jem again and again but no one answered.
She looked at the time and found that it was only past nine o'clock at night. It was impossible for Jem, a nocturnal person, to fall asleep.
Why didn't she pick up the phone then?
Sophia was a little depressed. Jem was the only friend she could trust, but she still couldn't get through her. It seemed that she could only stay in the hotel tonight.
Thinking to herself, Sophia pinched the bridge of her nose, then said to the driver, "Hey, could you please drive me to the nearest hotel?"
The driver was a middle-aged man in his forties. He was a little fat with a pair of beady eyes. He glanced at Sophia and said with a smile, "What's wrong? You can't get through to your friend's number?"
Sophia felt a little speechless. Wasn't he stating the obvious?
However, she still did not show it on her face. She just said indifferently, "Yeah."
The driver then said, "Well, it's not safe for a little girl like you to stay in a hotel. How about this? I have a spare room in my house. Let's go to my house tonight."
Though the driver had tried his best to be friendly, it was still quite shocking for a stranger to invite a young lady to his house to spend the night.
Sophia shot him a wary glance and shook her head. "Thank you, but there's no need for that."
"You lass, listen to my advice. Do you know how dangerous the hotel is now? Well, you've seen the news that a female guest was dragged away by someone in the hotel corridor, right? Those criminals specifically target young girls like you who are all by themselves. It's really dangerous!"
Upon hearing his words, Sophia was reminded of the news she had seen last time.
But compared to returning home with a stranger, she still felt that it was safer to stay in a hotel, so she refused adamantly, "No, thank you for your kindness. Please take me to the hotel."
The driver did not show any annoyance at all. He looked at Sophia's stern face through the rearview mirror and sneered at the bottom of his heart.
Fifteen minutes later, the taxi suddenly stopped on the side of a desolate road.
"What's going on?" Sophia asked nervously.
The driver shrugged and said, "I don't know why but the engine was turned off. It might be an engine failure."
Sophia was clueless about these, so she could only ask, "Then what should we do?"
The driver also pretended to be helpless. "It's not a convenient time to call someone to repair the car. We can only stop the car here first."
Sophia looked around and was panicked when she found that the car was stopped at a remote area surrounded by woods.
Her expression changed slightly as she took out two hundred-dollar notes from her wallet and handed them to the driver, saying, "Sorry, I have something else to do, so I won't stay here with you. These 200 dollars are to compensate for your loss. I'm really sorry."
As soon as Sophia finished her words, she wanted to get out of the car, but the driver grabbed her by the wrist.
She turned her head and saw the driver's glum expression on his face.
"Humph! 200 dollars? Who are you kidding?"
