Chapter 547 Taking Her Business In His Hand
If Marty remembered correctly, it should have been eleven or twelve years ago when Finneas had left Flaucford with his family.
At that time, Evelyn should be about nine or ten years old.
In other words, Finneas had died not long after the Hussain family left Flaucford?
So for so many years, Evelyn was brought up by her trashy adopted father who had been bullying her?
At this moment, Marty couldn't tell whether he was more distressed or regretful.
He felt sorry for what she had gone through. In fact, he regretted that he had never paid attention to the Hussain family all these years and never thought about looking for her.
A friendship between children was always the purest but also the easiest to forget.
Even he had remembered the little girl who always followed him around when he was a child. But before he developed feelings for her when they met again, he never thought of looking for her on his own initiative.
And this was how, most of the time, people would unconsciously miss out on the most important thing and the most important person in their lives.
Marty was silent for a long time until the car stopped at the downstairs of the apartment and Evelyn was ready to get out of the car.
"Wait a minute."
Evelyn was stunned and turned around.
However, he had already got out of the car hastily and walked towards her from the other side of the car.
Evelyn pursed her lips and asked, "Anything else?"
Marty looked at her. For the first time, there was no longer a trace of coquetry in between his delicate eyebrows and eyes but replaced with a flash of complication and forbearance in his eyes.
He said in a low voice, "I'll take you upstairs."
Evelyn was a little surprised, but she didn't say no. She just nodded silently.
She turned around and went inside. Marty hurried to follow her.
Although a lot of things had happened between the two, this was the first time Marty came to her place alone.
Previously, Evelyn was arranged by Starlight to stay here in this apartment. Later, she made some money and didn't want to move to any other place, so she simply bought the apartment.
After taking the elevator to the 18th floor, Evelyn took out the key and opened the door. The two of them entered the room.
The house was not big. It had two bedrooms and one living room. Nevertheless, it was decorated by her with warm colors in a cozy manner.
After putting her bag on the table, Evelyn took out a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet, and said, "There are no slippers for men, only women's. Just make do with it."
After that, she changed her shoes.
Marty glanced at the slippers beside his feet. They were pink in color with floral print, looking sweet and lovely.
He paid no attention to it. He took off his shoes, put on his socks, and stepped onto the floor.
When Evelyn saw that he was not wearing those slippers, she was slightly stunned. Without saying anything, she continued walking toward the house.
"Do you want some water?"
"Yeah," Marty said. Then, Evelyn took a cup of warm water and handed it to him.
Marty walked around the room. After appreciating the rest of the room, he said, "This is a nice place. It suits you very well."
Evelyn smiled faintly. "It's just a place with a roof over my head. As long as it's fit to live in, I'm fine with it. It doesn't matter if it suits me or not."
It didn't sound like what an A-list actress would say. After all, all the stars with the same social standing as her were staying in big houses and driving luxury cars. No one would want to live a humble lifestyle as she did.
Marty looked at her and frowned slightly. After a long while, he asked, "You don't have anything to say to me?"
Evelyn looked up, looked at him in the eyes, and then moved away in a flash.
She knew what he wanted to ask. Those words had been lingering in his mind countless times but died in his throat eventually.
Seeing that she was silent, Marty could only take the initiative to ask, "What about your mom? Where is she now?"
Evelyn pursed her lips. After a while, she said, "She's not in good health and in a nursing home now."
Marty frowned.
"A nursing home? What happened to her?"
Evelyn forced a smile and pretended to be relaxed. "You know, it's just an illness common in old age. It's not a big deal."
She didn't seem to want to continue this topic, so she glanced at him and said, "Well... You can sit here for a while. I'll get changed first."
Her clothes had been ripped, and she was still wearing Marty's coat outside.
Marty nodded when he saw this.
It was already ten minutes later when Evelyn got changed.
When she came out, she saw that Marty had already walked to the balcony, leaning against it and looking outside. She didn't know what he was thinking.
She thought for a moment, then walked over and asked, "What are you thinking?"
Marty turned around. There was a complicated look in his pitch-dark eyes in the darkness. He looked at her quietly. His voice was low and husky as if it came from a distant place.
He asked, "I've been thinking whether I should have cared about you more for the past few years. If I have made a call to you, you might not have to go through what you've been through all these years?"
Hearing that, Evelyn was stunned. She didn't expect that he was thinking about this.
She was silent for a moment before she pursed her lips.
After a while, she smiled and said, "Well, that's not true. You see, we're neither relatives nor close friends..."
However, Marty interrupted her before she could finish her sentence.
"We're neither relatives nor close friends?" He sneered and stepped towards her. "Do you really think that's how we're like?"
Evelyn was stunned. Her words got stuck in her throat.
She looked at Marty and sighed. "That's not what I meant."
"I don't care what you mean," Marty said coldly, "Since I've already known the truth, I can't let you deal with all these by yourself."
Hearing that, Evelyn frowned.
She didn't expect Marty to say that.
But she knew too well what kind of person her adoptive father was. That was why she didn't want Marty to know her actual situation. She just wanted him to stay away from this whirlpool.
Although she also knew that Marty was crafty, a scoundrel like her adoptive father was not someone that could be dealt with easily.
Besides...
She forced a smile and said, "Your words don't make sense at all. Who am I to you? Why do you have to meddle in my affairs?"
Her words made Marty freeze for a moment. Suddenly, something occurred to him, and his eyes instantly turned cold.
While laughing, Evelyn ran her fingers through her hair and said casually, "I am engaged. I will go to my fiancee if I ever need help. But what about you, Mr. Blaine? Who are you to me?"
As soon as she finished his words, Marty, whose eyes had turned cold, suddenly had a grim expression on his face.
All of a sudden, he came over and pressed Evelyn against the wall. His voice was hoarse and cold.
"Oh, you don't need my help? Then who was the one who refused to let me go and begged for help at the bar just now?"
Hearing what he said, Evelyn choked and did not know what to say for a moment.
