Chapter 909 Just A Substitute
Stunned, Anderson looked up at her.
Then he responded with a smile, "Maybe."
The two talked for a while. Seeing that it was getting late, they went back to their rooms to have a rest.
At this time, on the other side.
In Luca's manor.
Kayla sat in front of the dressing table, gazing in the mirror at her beautiful face.
She believed she was attractive, but why was it that no matter how hard she tried, she could never win him?
For him, she put her life on the line to come to this place to stay with another man, but all he cared about was that woman.
When she thought of that woman, she couldn't help but grit her teeth in hatred.
"Oh, Emmeline, I wonder where you are now."
"This time, it's fine if you're dead, but if you're not..."
Her eyes grew gloomy instantly. At this moment, the bedroom door was suddenly pushed open, and Luca walked in, reeking of alcohol.
Kayla was startled and leaped to her feet.
She turned around and walked over to him, forcing a smile.
"Mr. Marsh, you're back."
Luca fixed his gaze on her. Although he was still sane at the time, his mind wasn't exactly clear as he had drunk too much.
As he watched the woman approach slowly, a familiar face appeared in his mind, as if he had traveled back in time.
He couldn't help but reach out and caress her face, his voice filled with infatuation.
"My dear..."
The smile on Kayla's face froze.
Everyone assumed she was happy with Luca. After all, Luca had been incredibly gracious to her. Not only did Luca take her wherever he went, but he also pledged to marry her.
Many women wished for this, but they couldn't have it.
Only she knew that every night when he returned and looked at her, he called the name of another woman.
Therefore, the love and admiration in other people's eyes weren't actually for her.
Instead, they were all for the other woman, while Kayla was just a substitute for his ex-wife.
Thinking of this, she couldn't help but feel a sense of self-mockery.
Luca did not feel the change in her mood and continued to speak.
"My dear, you're back, aren't you? You'll never leave me, right? My dear..."
Kayla grabbed his hand in hers, put him on the bed, and said softly, "Yes, I'm back. I'll never leave you again. Mr. Marsh, can I wipe your face with a warm towel first?"
As she spoke, she was about to turn around to the bathroom.
However, Luca grabbed her as soon as she got up.
Puzzled, he looked at her and murmured, "Don't go, my dear. Don't leave me."
Kayla paused for a moment.
Even though her heart was full of bitterness, she remained Sonia. She then calmly said, "I'm not leaving. Mr. Marsh, can you let go of me first? Your clothes are dirty. I'll get you a clean cloth to change and then clean your face. Is that okay?"
The man looked up, uncertain if he had heard her correctly, and his blurry eyes seemed to have sharpened a little.
"Okay." He nodded.
After, Kayla got up and went to the bathroom.
Soon, she got a clean towel and fetched him a set of clean clothes.
She wiped his face, changed his clothes, and assisted him in lying down.
"My dear, come and sleep with me." Luca urged, holding her hand with a gentle and doting smile on his face.
With that, Kayla nodded and snuggled up to him.
Of course, he had been in a daze for a whole night.
Bit by bit, time passed. Kayla awoke all of a sudden.
She opened her eyes and saw that her surroundings were pitch-black. After a long while, she was finally able to make out what was around her.
She was still in the Marsh's manor's bedroom, lying on a massive bed. She was alone at the time and had no idea when Luca had gone.
In her head, she was startled and swiftly turned over, sat up, and stepped out.
A dim light came from the study.
She walked all the way out of the study in the dark. She spotted Luca seated inside, smiling at a large screen in front of him through the thin crack of the door.
On the big screen was a video of a woman painting. Her face was gentle and beautiful. She looked at him with a bright smile and asked, "Luca, is my painting nice?"
Then she heard a man's voice. "Yes, it's nice."
The woman chuckled happily. She appeared like a beautiful princess in the palace as the sun shone brightly on her face.
Kayla's fingers suddenly froze upon seeing this.
A shiver ran down her spine when she observed what was going on within.
Not daring to make any sound, she turned around and proceeded to the bedroom.
The next day.
Early in the morning, Jara had summoned Quan to ask about the results of his investigation.
Quan told him the latest update. Soon, Jara shared the information with Anderson and Clarissa.
They had discovered the whereabouts of the Marsh Family's three men, who had appeared in Emmeline's final missing spot.
They were at F Country's underground casino. Besides, they were not being watched or controlled in any way.
As he studied the investigation materials, Anderson's brows furrowed tightly. He somehow felt everything was odd.
"Did you alert them?" he asked in a husky tone.
Quan shook his head and said, "No. I returned as soon as I discovered where they were hiding. Although I have sent people to keep an eye on them, I have instructed them not to act rashly and alert them."
Anderson nodded.
Jara then stood up and said, "I'll go to F Country now."
After he finished his sentence, Anderson quickly stopped him.
He asked, "Hm... Do you want to meet Luca first?"
Hearing this, Jara immediately looked gloomy.
Anderson explained, "They're from the Marsh Family. Besides, we aren't sure if the mysterious force is the Marsh Family. If it's not necessary, you'd better not offend them outright. Go to Luca first, and I'll send someone to locate Emmeline. Well, starting from both sides is safer and more efficient."
He was speaking the truth. Thus, even though Jara was still a little anxious, he still agreed.
At noon that day, he arrived at Luca's manor.
Seeing Jara's arrival, Luca grinned and greeted him, "Hey, what brings you here today, Jara? Come in and have a seat."
Luca was not an important member of the Marsh Family. However, because of his abilities and intelligence, his descendants had promoted him two years ago.
With a poker face, Jara walked over. "I have something to ask you."
Luca was stunned.
His smile eventually turned distant and courteous, though he still had a smile on his face.
