Chapter 756 Not Going Home
Emmeline didn't love Mr. Murray, but before that, she thought that even if he didn't treat her well, he was still her family.
However, he abandoned her, and yet, she had to go back, respect him as her father, and live under the same roof as him.
Not only that, but she also had to be his dependant, which she hated to do so.
Therefore, she did not agree but rather sat there silently and pursed her lips, just like a stubborn mule.
At a glance, Mrs. Illington could tell what she was thinking.
After all, a mother knew her daughter best.
Therefore, she became anxious and tried her best to persuade Emmeline, followed by giving her righteous speech.
That time, she kept talking about how a woman would suffer if she had to live by herself.
After that, she mentioned that Emmeline should understand her and give Mr. Murray a chance. She also insisted that he didn't abandon her on purpose.
In any case, Mrs. Illington had said a lot, but Emmeline couldn't listen to a word.
At that moment, Emmeline just wanted to figure out the reason.
Why did her mother choose to take Mr. Murray's side and persuade her to forgive him? She was the one who was hurt.
Why was she the one who always had to understand how difficult it was for her mother and her stepfather?
Had her mother ever thought of how their actions would affect her?
Even so, instead of crying, Emmeline just looked at Mrs. Illington with her wide-opened, perplexed eyes.
Perhaps her eyes were so clear that she could see through her own heart. Deep down, she was extremely distressed.
Soon, Mrs. Illington got flustered. Seeing that Emmeline didn't respond, she reached out her hand and slapped Emmeline's back.
While she was hitting Emmeline, she sobbed furiously.
"Why are you in a daze? Are you mute? Answer me!"
"Say something!"
"Don't look at me like that. Do you hear me?"
Yes, Emmeline heard that.
For a split second, she felt a dull pain in her heart. This whole situation was so ironic.
Then, she withdrew her gaze, lowered her head, and mumbled, "Okay."
After a pause, she added, "Got it."
Exhausted, she sat there like a wilted bud.
On the other hand, Mrs. Illington was still crying. The moment she looked at Emmeline, her hand was still in the air, but she couldn't bear to hit Emmeline anymore.
With that, she cried even more tumultuously, and the pain in her heart was extremely intense.
In the end, she held Emmeline in her arms and cried, "Emmeline, please be understanding. I don't have any other way."
Being held in her mother's arms tightly, Emmeline twitched her mouth powerlessly.
There was no other way...
Really?
Countless times, she had heard Mrs. Illington said these words.
Especially when Mr. Murray was scolding her, hitting her, repeatedly pushing her away, and dissing her with the most hurtful words.
So, was there really nothing that her mother could do?
Although Emmeline didn't understand, she refused to compromise.
Later, when Mrs. Illington brought her back to the Murray Family, she saw the cold smile on Mr. Murray's face.
Hence, she clarified, "If you don't want to accept me, I won't force you. From today onward, I am no longer your stepdaughter, and I have nothing to do with this family. But please be rest assured, I won't sue you for abandoning me because you didn't. I am the one who will be leaving. So, take care and goodbye."
After that, Emmeline turned around and left.
Upon hearing Emmeline's words, Mrs. Illington and Mr. Murray were stunned.
A few seconds later, Mrs. Illington came to her senses and rushed forward to pull Emmeline back. "Where are you going?"
With a calm expression, Emmeline looked at her and uttered, "Have a good life, Mom. Eventually, I will find a place that I belong to. If I have the chance in the future, I will come back and see you."
Once she finished her words, she broke free from her mother's hand and ran away quickly.
Due to pregnancy, Mrs. Illington didn't dare to run fast, so she didn't manage to catch up with Emmeline.
Panicked, she stamped her foot on the ground.
As for Mr. Murray, he insulted, "Let her go. I'll see where she can go. If she dares, don't come back for the rest of her life!"
After he was done speaking, he turned around and went into the house.
Later, Emmeline actually didn't come back.
Instead, she went to an orphanage in the town.
In fact, she knew the principal of that orphanage.
For several times, she had met him on the road. As he was quite elderly, she had helped him crossed the road a few times.
That time, she heard that he was about to retire, and he had no children nor family, so the children in the orphanage were all his family.
When Emmeline went to the principal's house, he was watering flowers in his yard.
As soon as he heard a voice, he turned around and saw the mischievous Emmeline leaning against the fence while smiling sweetly at him.
"Grandpa Farrington, can I be your granddaughter? I heard that you don't have one," she asked.
At first, Grandpa Farrington was stunned, and then he chuckled.
"Oh, what are you talking about? Get down," he responded.
Right away, Emmeline got down and entered his house through the main door. After that, she shared with him all the incidents she went through and her thoughts.
In that era, the law was not perfect. So, after listening to her, Grandpa Farrington was mad.
However, Emmeline was very calm.
Sitting beside him, she coolly advised, "Don't be angry, Grandpa Farrington. It's understandable. After all, human beings are selfish in nature. Before that, Mr. Murray and I have no feelings for each other, and we are not blood-related, so it's normal that he doesn't like me and refuses to raise me."
Upon hearing what she said, Grandpa Farrington was more heartbroken.
"Oh, please don't say that, sweetheart. You deserve to be loved," he comforted.
After that, Emmeline smiled brightly, revealing her sparkling, white teeth.
"So, Grandpa Farrington, are you willing to take me in?"
Instantaneously, Grandpa Farrington was stunned.
Then, a troubled expression appeared on his face.
At that moment, Emmeline saw his expression. Although she was a little disappointed in her heart, she remained neutral.
After putting on a smile, she added, "Don't worry, Grandpa Farrington. If you can't, I can go and find Granny Doyle in the next town. I heard that she lives alone as her grandchildren are living somewhere else. Besides, I can help her with daily chores. Although I'm young, I cook well, and the more I cook, the better it tastes. Except for a meal to get by the day, I won't ask for much."
Seeing Emmeline spoke in a serious tone, Grandpa Farrington felt a pain in his heart.
Who would bear to refuse her after what she had said? So, he agreed immediately.
With his trembling hands, he went forward and held her little hand. "You silly little girl. What are you talking about? Of course, I am happy to have you. Come here! I'll introduce you to someone."
As he spoke, he stood up with his tottering body.
Right away, Emmeline, who was very observant, came forward to hold him and follow him to the backyard.
