Chapter 834 A Pawn
Emmeline thanked him and sat in the wheelchair.
Later, although the young policeman didn't say anything, she could sense a hint of pity in his eyes. It might be because he noticed her stiff legs.
Besides, he probably would've imagined all sorts of tragic stories that could happen to her.
However, Emmeline couldn't bother to explain her actual situation to him. After seeing him off, she went into the yard with her suitcase, which she left at the corner of the door.
For a long time, this old house had not been inhabited.
The yard was overgrown with weeds, and a few spider webs were hanging around the corner of the walls. Moreover, the tree that was once towering and spectacular had become bare. It seemed like someone had damaged it.
While controlling the wheelchair, Emmeline moved forward.
Fortunately, there were no steps in front of the door. Thus, she wouldn't have any problem entering with her wheelchair. After she moved toward the door, she took out the keys, opened the door, and went straight into the house.
The house was pitch-dark.
As it was vacant for a long time, it was dusty and musty.
With the help of her memory, Emmeline found the switch and turned on the light. Instantly, the room brightened up.
At the same time, Emmeline raised her hand to block her eyes.
After a while, she slowly put it down.
Then, she looked around and found that everything in the house—whether it was decoration or style—was still the same as how she last remembered it.
The only difference was that dust was everywhere, and the sofa in the middle of the living room was covered with a layer of white cloth. When she saw that, she went over there and pulled the white cloth. At once, the dust flew around.
While waving her hand, she coughed lightly. After that, she held back her annoyance and briefly tidied up the house.
The house was spacious. So, in the past, some children who couldn't fit in the orphanage would stay here.
As Grandpa Farrington's ancestors left behind this house, it covered a vast area. At that time, before Grandpa Farrington let out his final breath, he called her to his bedside and gave her the ownership of this house as an advanced dowry. Other than that, he asked her to live a good life.
Although he was not her biological father nor grandfather, he was closer to her than her own family.
Thinking of this, Emmeline couldn't help feeling emotional.
After she cleaned up, she didn't go to any of the other rooms. Instead, she went straight to the room she used to live in.
Fortunately, the room was on the first floor. Hence, she didn't have to climb the stairs. After tidying up her room, she opened the suitcase, took out a set of pajamas, and changed into them. Then, she went to bed hastily.
For the whole day, things kept happening around her, which wore her out physically and mentally.
Therefore, she chose to have a light sleep. At least if anything happened, she could be alerted and woke up in an instant. Unexpectedly, as she was too exhausted, she fell into a deep sleep as soon as she hit the bed.
When she woke up, it was already the next morning.
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw sunlight coming through the gaps between the window edges. Surprisingly, it was already 10 a.m.
With that, Emmeline sat up.
Her body felt sore. Even so, she knew that it was because she hadn't slept in this wooden bed for a long time, and the bedboard had become too hard for her body to bear.
Last night, as she was doing a quick clean-up, she didn't bother to find herself a clean mattress and decided to make do with the bedboard.
After all, according to her predictions with Jara, since those people couldn't make their first move, they would highly likely make their second move soon.
So, she was actually waiting for them to come last night.
However, nothing happened during her sleep.
Why did they hold back their urge to make a move?
While pondering, Emmeline furrowed her brows.
Nevertheless, the show had begun, and she couldn't give up right now.
Emmeline pushed back the quilt and got out of bed. Then, she massaged her sore shoulders and sat in her wheelchair to get some water to wash her face.
For years, no one had lived here, so there was no water supply. Fortunately, there was a well in the backyard, and the water in the well hadn't dried up.
With that, she took half a bucket of water to wash her face. Then, she found a toothbrush and brushed her teeth. After she was done, she returned to her room to change her clothes and went out.
Right in front of her house, there was a market.
The market was bustling, and just like the other markets in the countryside, there were vendors everywhere on the streets.
Over there, the whole atmosphere was warm and lively. There were voices of the vendors dealing, the villagers chatting, and the children giggling.
By operating her wheelchair, Emmeline went to a stall and bought a piece of sandwich with a bottle of milk.
As she was heading back with her breakfast, she suddenly saw a figure in front of her.
Instantaneously, she was stunned.
The next second, the figure camouflaged with the huge crowd and disappeared.
Emmeline's face changed. Hurriedly, she operated her wheelchair and chased after that figure.
Even so, the other person was swift. Although she only took dozens of seconds, by the time she got there, he was gone.
With that, the color drained from her face.
Although it was just a glance, she knew that she was not mistaken.
Clearly, that person was her senior apprentice from the Salvation Club, whom she was very familiar with, and his name was Skylar Witt.
Wasn't he dead? Why was he here?
Soon, Emmeline came to her senses.
Based on the information that Jara had previously gathered, it showed that these people who had "died" in the past were not actually dead.
Instead, they pretended to be dead and escaped. Afterward, they switched their identity from the defeated prisoners of the Salvation Club to the main leaders of the Icarus Association.
With a pale face, she was stopped dead in tracks. Even so, seconds later, she turned around and left without hesitation.
She went all the way back to the yard, isolating the hustle and bustle from the streets.
The moment she looked up, she saw the main door was left open, and a familiar figure was sitting in the living room.
At once, her eyes turned cold.
By operating her wheelchair, she quickly went over.
"It's been a while, Skylar."
Upon hearing her voice, Skylar raised his head.
He had a face that she could not be more familiar with. It was warm and gentle, like the spring breeze that would blow away Emmeline's frustrations whenever she was in a bad mood in the past.
But now, when she looked at his face again, she felt somewhat bitter.
With his gaze fixed on her, Skylar put on a faint smile.
"Emmeline, I haven't seen you for a long time. You don't seem surprised at all when you see me again."
Hearing that, Emmeline scoffed. After that, she entered the living room and put her breakfast on the table.
With a cold voice, she insulted, "Why would I be surprised? For several times, you have led a group of people and made all sorts of huge moves to kill me. Even if I am surprised, I am just surprised that you come so late."
As she spoke, she closed the door.
While observing her, Skylar didn't move.
Moreover, he had no intention to run away nor step forward to attack her.
On the contrary, he just sat quietly by the table. If anyone who didn't know them saw this scene, they might think that an old friend was here to reminisce about the good old days.
However, Emmeline knew that there was nothing between them except bad blood.
Because those "good old days" were nothing more than a conspiracy planned by them.
