Chapter 594 Lend Her a Shoulder

When it came to this surgery, she was already pretty sure it was going to be successful.
But as long as she didn't hear the result with her own ears, she would still be worry about it.
However, everything was fine now since the surgery was successful.
In the end, he lived up to Evelyn's expectations.
While she was thinking about that, Marty had the doctors go take a rest.
Naturally, someone had already sent Iris back to the ICU and had someone looking after her personally.
Because of the 48-hour critical period, Evelyn still wasn't allowed to visit her yet.
All she could do was watch her from a distance through a thick pane of glass.
And all she saw was her mother lying on the clean white bed, skinny and pale from the surgery.
Fortunately, she could also see that her heartbeat was beating regularly through the heart rate monitor. As she watched it, tears rolled down her cheeks.
Suddenly, Marty walked up from behind her.
Then, he reached his hand out and pulled her in. After he did that, he hugged her and placed her head on his shoulder.
Right after that, he whispered gently, "It's okay to cry. You will feel better after crying about it."
Evelyn couldn't stand it anymore. She leaned in, grabbed his clothes, and burst into tears.
She cried so hard in his arms as though she had bottled up her worries, grievances and fear all these years and let it out all at once.
Marty stood there motionless as he just let her hold onto him and lean on him while her tears drenched his collars.
At this moment, a peacefulness and blissfulness like never before welled up inside him as it filled him up so much that there wasn't any room for anything else.
Unsure of how long she had cried, Evelyn only stopped when she got tired.
After she let go of him, she realized it was a little embarrassing as she rubbed her eyes.
When she noticed the two wet patches on his clothes where she was crying, she immediately felt even more embarrassed as her face glowed like two little tomatoes.
"Err... I'm so sorry to have dirtied your clothes."
However, Marty smiled as if he didn't care at all.
Then, he reached out and helped her tidy her hair as he said, "That's what a boyfriend's shirt is for."
His pampering tone and forgiving gaze suddenly made Evelyn's heart skip a beat.
After she heard that, the warmness from her face spread to her earlobes.
After fidgeting around with her fingers, she asked, "You must be hungry. How about we go and get something to eat?"
At first, he didn't really realize it but as soon as she asked him that, he really did start to feel a little hungry.
After all, both of them hadn't really had anything to eat since this morning.
Because they were both so worried about Iris at the time, they didn't even have the appetite to eat even when Carrie bought them lunch.
So as soon as Marty realized that, he held her hand and said, "Let me take you to your favorite roast duck stall."
Slightly hesitant, Evelyn turned around and took a glance at her mother in the ICU.
"But ..."
Marty knew that she couldn't bear to leave but she had to have something to eat. What was more, he wasn't going to let her stay the night anyway. After all, she needed her rest as well or her body won't be able to take it.
So, with stern look on his face, he said seriously, "Let's come over here again after dinner and you can come back here and stay until 11. But you have to go back and have some rest by 11 and come back again the next day when you wake up. If you don't agree to that, I won't let you come visit her tomorrow."
At the end of the day, a man's serious look was always going to be intimidating.
Since Evelyn wasn't sure if he was being serious or not, she didn't want to go against him or he would most probably stop her from visiting her own mother tomorrow. If he did that, she would definitely worry herself to death.
Finally, she reluctantly nodded in agreement.
"Fine then."
As soon as he heard that, Marty broke into a smile again.
"Then, let's go downstairs."
"Okay."
When they got downstairs and got into the car, Aria was the one driving. After all, Marty had been occupied all day and he would definitely be too tired to drive.
Aria sent them straight to The Moher Roast Duck, and then waited outside while the both of them walked upstairs to a room that Marty had booked.
Actually, Evelyn didn't really have an appetite. On top of that, she was an actress so her appetite wasn't that large anyway. When coupled with the nervousness from today's surgery and the uncertainty of the next 48 hours, she still couldn't stop worrying about the critical period.
That was why, despite the fact that she was sitting here with Marty, her heart and soul was staring through that thick pane of glass in the ICU.
When Marty saw her in a daze, he sighed.
After he put some duck in her bowl, he said, "If you really want a peace of mind, I can let you sleep there and keep her company."
As soon as she heard that, Evelyn's eyes suddenly lit up.
"Really?" she asked.
When Marty saw her excited look, there was a flash of concern in his eyes.
But in the end, he still nodded and said, "Yes, really."
But before Evelyn could say anything else, he added, "But before that, you have to eat at least two bowls of rice first."
"Huh?"
Evelyn didn't expect that request coming from him. Although there was a scrumptious spread before her and a few bowls of fragrant rice, it still felt difficult for her.
"But I'm not hungry."
After he heard that, Marty sulked.
"Then you're not allowed to stay in the hospital tonight."
"Oh, don't do that. Fine! I will eat."
For fear that he might change his mind later, Evelyn started eating as soon as she said that.
She had a very small mouth so she took very small bites. Watching her trying to stuff all that food into her little mouth looked funny to Marty for some reason.
Marty tried so hard no to laugh but at the same time, he was worried she would choke so he had got a bowl of soup and put it before her.
"Slow down. There's no reason to be in such a hurry. Here, have some soup first."
At that moment, Evelyn didn't dare to say anything else so she immediately put down her bowl and started gulping down the soup.
Perhaps it was because she was too eager to finish it, she suddenly choked on the soup instead and bent down, coughing loudly.
After feeling bad about it, Marty immediately frowned.
"What happened? Are you alright?"
he asked as he patted her back.
Waving her hand, Evelyn just said with a reddened face, "I… I'm fine."
With a frown, Marty pulled out a piece of tissue paper and wiped the corner of her mouth for her. As he wiped her, he gently reprimanded her, "Why are you in such a hurry? No one is fighting for it with you. We have to take our time when we eat, don't you know?"
How could Evelyn not know how to eat? After all, she was not a three-year-old child.
Obviously, she was in such a rush to go back and keep her mother company at the hospital.
Roughly guessing why she was in such a hurry, Marty knew that if he didn't let her go back and stay at the hospital, she definitely wouldn't be able to sleep in peace tonight.
So, he didn't want to force her anymore as he sighed, "Fine. Just eat. After you're done eating, I will send you back."
Upon hearing that, Evelyn nodded her head vigorously.
After dinner, Marty sent Evelyn back to the hospital as promised.
He had someone add another bed in the ICU so that after Evelyn changed into a sterile robe, she could rest there and keep her mother company.
Of course, Evelyn was more than satisfied with this arrangement of his.
