Chapter 548 Beyond Grateful
The distance between the two of them was too close. Besides, Marty's assertive presence made Evelyn a little uncomfortable.
She couldn't help but shrink back a little. Her eyes darted around, but she didn't dare to look at him.
Evelyn did not sound as confident as before. "That was a special case. How did I know you were the one who had come?"
Marty narrowed his eyes and looked at her in a patronizing way.
After a while, he sneered and said, "It doesn't matter. Now you know. Since you have such an unyielding attitude, you shouldn't have reached out to me for help in the first place. Since I saved you, I have no reason to leave you to someone else's bed, am I right?"
Evelyn's body stiffened as she raised her head and looked at him in disbelief.
"What do you mean?"
Marty laughed coldly. "You've heard me."
Marty leaned over and pressed his lips against her ear. His voice was soft, husky, and evil, carrying with it a viciousness that she had never heard from him before.
"Evelyn, you know what I want. You know very well that I won't stop until I get what I want. Originally, I didn't want to pester, but you stayed that night. Do you think that anyone could sleep with me and then stay or leave as she pleases? What do you take me for?"
Evelyn froze on the spot. Her teeth were almost chattering because of Marty's words.
Part of it was because of fear, and the other half was because of anger.
She asked through her gritted teeth, "What the hell do you want?"
Marty leaned even closer to her and said in a low voice, "You'll find out in the future."
After he said that, he got up. The shadow in front of her suddenly disappeared, followed by his oppressive aura.
Evelyn finally let out a sigh of relief.
Followed by a heavyweight on her chest.
She looked at Marty and said with a frown, "Marty, I've made it very clear to you. I do not have any feelings for you. Please stay out of my life if you still see us as childhood friends. I'll be very grateful if you can do me this favor."
Marty laughed coldly and didn't respond to her. Instead, he said, "I don't need you to be grateful to me. Heh, there are so many people in this world who owe me a debt of gratitude. I don't need another one."
Evelyn was stunned. Marty was still as sharp-tongued as before. His words were obviously out of kindness, but the way he put it made her want to beat him into a pulp.
She took a deep breath and tried to suppress the annoyance and uneasiness in her heart.
Knowing that there was no way to talk sense into him today, she had no choice but to change the subject.
"Well, it's none of my business what you're going to do. I'm not interested in knowing either. It's getting late, so I'm going to bed. You can leave now!"
This time, Marty took a deep look at her. Without saying anything, he turned around and left.
The door outside the house made a "bang" sound. It was not until she was sure that Marty had left that Evelyn felt like she was drained of energy. She suddenly collapsed and slid down against the wall.
The next day, Evelyn went to the hospital to visit her mother.
Unexpectedly, before she reached the ward, Evelyn heard two nurses whispering in the corridor. Their faces were full of excitement and shyness.
As they walked towards Evelyn, they whispered excitedly, "Wow, the man just now is so handsome. He is probably the most handsome man I have ever seen in my life."
"Yeah. He's got a warm smile. Look at him! He's also gentle. I wonder who is he?"
"There are so many rich and powerful families in Flaucford. It's hard to tell which family he is from. I envy Miss Hussain for knowing such a friend. He is handsome, kind-hearted, and gentle to the elders. He is also very gentle to us nurses. If I hadn't known that he is Miss Hussain's boyfriend, I would have thrown myself at him."
Another nurse was surprised when she heard that. "Wait, boyfriend? Isn't Miss Hussain's boyfriend Mr. Biden?"
The nurse who spoke before frowned and said, "Mr. Biden? No, I think they're just friends. Judging from the way they interact, I don't think they're a couple at all. You should see the man with Miss Hussain. He's like her future son-in-law. Why would Miss Hussain choose Mr. Biden, who rarely comes to visit her mother, over someone so gentle and considerate? Miss Hussain is not blind."
The other party nodded. "You're right."
Because the floor that Evelyn wanted to go to was not at high levels, so she chose to take the stairs instead of taking the lift for convenience's sake.
When the two nurses were talking, Evelyn was standing at the end of the stairs. It was dim here, so they did not notice Evelyn was here.
Seeing that the two nurses had left, Evelyn's face fell slightly, and she had a bad feeling in her heart. She hurried to the ward.
The ward that Iris Hussain, Evelyn's mother, stayed in was at the end of the corridor, which was not a VIP ward. But because Evelyn was a public figure and wanted to give her mother a better environment for recuperation, it was a single room.
Before she got to the door, she heard a burst of hearty laughter coming from inside. She was slightly shocked. It was Iris's voice.
Since Iris fell ill, Evelyn hadn't heard her mother laugh so happily for a long time.
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat. She quickened her pace and walked towards the ward.
The door of the ward was pushed open with a bang, and the laughter inside stopped abruptly.
Inside the ward, Evelyn saw that Iris was leaning against the bed whereas Marty was sitting next to her, peeling an apple for her.
Behind him stood his assistant, Aria Leff. When he saw Evelyn coming in, he bowed to her out of courtesy.
"Hello, Miss Hussain."
Evelyn ignored him, with an unhappy look on her face.
She looked at Marty coldly and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Marty narrowed his eyes slightly and didn't answer.
On the contrary, Iris was too excited to notice that there was something wrong between the two.
She smiled and waved to her. "Evelyn, here you are. Come and sit down."
After Evelyn walked over, she continued to say, "You are so lucky to have such a good friend. Why didn't you tell me? It's not like I am against you having a boyfriend. After all, you are all grown-up now. You have my full support. If Marty hadn't come over today, I wouldn't have known about it."
As she spoke, she glared at Evelyn.
Evelyn froze all of a sudden and looked at Marty in disbelief.
She had never thought that Marty would have the guts to come here. Not only that, it seemed like he had told some nonsense to Iris.
