Chapter 683 Hard-Spoken But Soft-Hearted

Marty returned to the ward after hanging up the phone. Through the window, he saw Charlotte sitting in front of the hospital bed, assisting Buckley with the quilt.
Her face was filled with worry and heartache, which made her look completely different from her usual fierce demeanor.
He stood there for a while, not in a rush to enter. Unconsciously, his lips curled into a joyful smile.
In fact, Charlotte was like that.
She was hard-spoken but soft-hearted. She complained about Buckley on a daily basis.
However, Charlotte would be the most concerned and distressed if something happened to him.
This was probably the most beautiful and purest relationship in the world.
As he pondered this, he couldn't help but think of Sue.
The rest of the people were not paying attention just now, but he was.
When Sue saw Buckley, Marty noticed a different emotion gleaming in her eyes.
On the other hand, he remembered Buckley hiding Sue's photo between the pages of the book. He had to be terrified of being discovered by Charlotte.
What was their relationship? What made Charlotte dislike Sue so much?
And what about Sue's feelings for Buckley?
Marty felt that he could test the waters.
So, he pushed the door open and said with a smile, "Mom, Roland will come over after work."
Charlotte nodded.
She had two sons, but their personalities and ways of doing things were very different.
Roland was steady, whereas Marty was impulsive. Therefore, Charlotte was at ease when the company was handed over to Roland.
As she thought so, she raised her head and looked at Marty.
"It's pointless to stay here. Feel free to leave. I'll let you know when Buckley wakes up."
Marty didn't leave after hearing these words. Instead, he moved a stool next to her and sat down.
"Mom, how can you be like this? You wouldn't let me go when Dad was in the operation. You're driving me away now that he's fine."
Upon hearing his words, Charlotte knew that Marty had other intentions.
At this time, Buckley was no longer in danger, and she was in the mood to joke.
So she turned to look at him with a faint smile and said, "Oh, why didn't you stick to me like this when your wife is present? Why are you so two-faced?"
Marty was stunned.
But soon, he found the loophole in Charlotte's words.
His eyes widened, and he exclaimed, "Mom, you admit she's your daughter-in-law?"
Charlotte's face stiffened.
She indeed said so.
However, she did not imply that she would accept Evelyn.
After all, she hadn't completely overcome her aversion to the entertainment industry because of Sue. Besides, she despised Evelyn's tough temper.
Therefore, she hoped that Marty and Evelyn would break up if at all possible.
Marty's temper was erratic. Hence, Charlotte always felt that he needed someone gentler and more sensible by his side.
Only a girl like that could look after Marty and live happily ever after.
But, in the face of Marty's bright and expectant eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say those words. In the end, she swallowed back the words.
In the end, she gave Marty a cold snort and threw him a long face.
"You wish! I didn't say that."
Although she said so, her arrogant expression did not appear to indicate that she was spurning Evelyn. Rather, it was a different kind of acknowledgment.
Marty sniggered when he saw this.
Later, he picked up an orange from the table and peeled it.
"Mom, there's something I want to ask you," he said as he peeled the orange.
Charlotte hadn't had such a peaceful conversation with Marty in a long time. Marty was usually not at home, or she was mad and didn't want to talk to him.
As a result, even though they were together frequently, they rarely had the opportunity to sit quietly like this.
Because of Buckley's injury, they now have the opportunity to have a serious discussion. As a result, Charlotte cherished this opportunity as well.
"What do you want to ask me?" she replied, nodding.
Marty inquired, perplexed, "Do you know Sue before? What's your relationship with her? Why do I always feel that there's something strange going on between the two of you?"
Charlotte's face immediately turned cold.
She didn't expect Marty was to ask about this.
To be honest, she didn't want to talk to the next generation about the things that happened to them.
But since he had asked today, Charlotte didn't want to lie to him.
Thus, she told him about Sue being adopted by her family, growing up in the Dawson family, and meeting Buckley.
She also told him about the incident on their wedding night, when Sue deliberately walked into the wrong room while drunk and slept with Buckley.
After all, Marty was no longer a kid. He already had a wife.
Hence, there was no need to avoid when it came to sex. She could simply say it.
After hearing Charlotte's words, Marty was shocked.
He had long expected that there was a great deal of conflict between Sue and his parents.
But he didn't expect the truth to be so harsh.
For a brief moment, he was strangely silent. Charlotte tilted her head to look at him and said gently, "It's fine. Well, the grudge will live on in us. It has absolutely nothing to do with you all."
Marty gave a wry smile.
"It would be great if what you said is true. But, if that's the case, why were you mad that Evelyn had previously known Sue? It seems that you still care about her."
Charlotte was stunned.
After a long while, she let out an unnatural snort.
"You're both different."
When Marty heard this, he realized that Charlotte's prejudice was deeply ingrained and that it would take time to overcome.
Thus, he said nothing else and left at six in the evening, when Buckley awoke. After Roland arrived and handed over his work, Marty then left.
The cause of the accident was not discovered until noon the following day.
Roland's personnel managed to get the footage from the surveillance camera where the accident occurred.
According to the footage, the truck sped out of another fork and crashed into Buckley's car.
However, Roland was unable to interrogate the driver because he had passed away due to the heavy collision.
Only from the footage could it be seen that the truck driver was slightly unconscious before colliding with Buckley's car.
Roland immediately applied to the department for the autopsy, and at the same time, he dispatched someone to investigate the driver's recent contacts and financial status.
The investigation went very smoothly, and both the banks and the police station were extremely cooperative.
Thus, all of the information was placed on Roland's desk three days later.
Roland did not go through the documents alone. Instead, he took them to the hospital and examined them together with Buckley.
