Chapter 786 In an Awkward Predicament
The rest of the treasure was all hidden on a map. This map had been kept by Jara for a long time, and he was unable to decipher the code.
Coincidentally, when Emmeline was in prison, she managed to figure out something, and that was how she won the opportunity to cooperate with him.
At the moment, both of them were silent. No one spoke, and the atmosphere was as silent as grave.
After a while, Jara said, "Once the news of the Jade of Heaven broke out, the Salvation Club and the Lost Vanguard, as the two major organizations locally, immediately got into a fight to obtain the treasure. When the two sides were in a tussle, all of a sudden, the deepest secrets of each party were leaked out."
"I admit that I used you at that time, but if I didn't do that, the fight had already begun and we would have all died!"
"In truth, which party benefited from the tussle? Even though we have won the fight against the Salvation Club, we were severely weakened. Later, the Lost Vanguard had fallen apart, and everyone left. It was not as glorious as before. Emmeline, have you ever thought about why it all happened?"
Upon hearing his explanation, Emmeline was shocked.
Raising her head, she looked at Jara impassively. All of a sudden, a thought came to her mind, and she felt a shiver down her spine.
"Are you saying that someone was behind all these since the beginning?"
"Yes." Jara sneered and replied with self-mockery, "The Jade of Heaven, the resurrection, they were all fake. Someone deliberately acted it out, which led to the dispute between two major organizations. In the end, both parties were badly injured. In truth, the jade, the scene, and the map were all fake."
He looked at her seriously and whispered, "Emmeline, we were all deceived."
Hearing that, Emmeline was completely stunned.
In her mind, she still recalled what the leader of Salvation Club, had said a long time ago. He was like her brother, whom she had sworn to have an eternal friendship with.
The leader once told her. "Emmeline, I never wanted to live forever. When everyone else is dead, what's the point of living forever? I just want to use it to save Serena's life. She can't hold on any longer. Emmeline, help me if you see me as your brother."
Serene was his only daughter.
At the time, there was no reason for Emmeline to refuse.
To her, regardless of the kind of treasure it was, it was just something external.
She couldn't care less about it, but she didn't know that it might mean a lot to someone else.
In the end, it turned out that the treasure that had provoked the bloody feud between the underground gang was nothing but a trap.
As he gazed at her with a cold expression, Emmeline raised her head and looked into his eyes, then asked, "When did you find out?"
Upon hearing that, Jara moved his fingers slightly.
Then, his thin lips parted gently. "Half a month ago."
"Which means, it was when I was about to be released from prison."
He nodded.
Seeing that, Emmeline smiled grimly.
"If that's the case, then why did you agree to my request and wanted me to help you decipher the code on the map that is completely useless? Don't you already know that it's just a conspiracy and that it's just a piece of useless paper?"
Suddenly, the room became quiet, and no one spoke.
As Jara stood silently, he looked like a lonely and stubborn pine tree.
At that moment, Jara didn't say a word, but Emmeline seemed to realized something and felt a sense of self-mockery rising in her. Then, she turned around and was about to walk out.
When Jara saw that, his pupils contracted in an instant.
Immediately, he raised his hand and grabbed hold of her wrist.
"Where are you going?"
"Let me have a moment."
Emmeline's voice was calm, but it was no longer as indifferent as before.
When he heard her reply, his hand froze, but after a while, he let go of her. Putting down his hand, he said in a deep voice, "You're not allowed to leave."
However, Emmeline did not speak as she stepped out of the room.
For an entire night, the atmosphere in the castle was a little strange and stiff.
No one knew what had happened. But tonight, everyone seemed to be more careful compared to a normal day.
The lights in the study in the main building had been on all night.
In Tower B, the lights in one of the bedrooms were also turned on for the whole night.
The next day, the sun came scorching through the window, shining on the white bedsheets.
When Emmeline opened her eyes, they were suddenly blinded by the sun, so subconsciously, she raised her hand to block it.
The clock on the wall pointed to nine o'clock in the morning, indicating that she did not sleep long.
Last night, when she learned the truth, she came back to her room in a panic. She felt so confused that she couldn't sleep at all.
She sat silently for an entire night and recalled a lot of memories. It was almost dawn when she finally managed to fall asleep.
It had only been three hours since then.
However, she did not intend to continue sleeping.
Hence, she got up from the bed and changed into a casual outfit before walked out of the room.
In the garden, Jara was walking the dogs.
As a tall and well-built man, he was seen bending forward slightly, playing with his dogs.
It was obvious that he liked these two dogs very much.
While the dogs were licking and jumping on him, he didn't seem to express any form of disdain.
Meanwhile, Emmeline, who was standing in the corridor not far away, was looking at him. Suddenly, the words he said last night flashed across her mind. As those memories came flooding back, it made her trembled inside.
At this moment, Uncle Poick appeared.
"Miss Illington, you're up."
Turning around, when Emmeline realized it was him, she nodded slightly.
"Good morning, Uncle Poick."
"Good morning."
Uncle Poick remained a good attitude when it came to interacting with Emmeline.
He glanced at Jara, who was walking the dogs in the garden, and said with a smile, "Mr. Holland got up late this morning and he has yet to have breakfast either. Miss Illington, would you like to have breakfast over here in the main building?"
Slightly lowering her eyes, Emmeline thought for a moment before she nodded in agreement.
"Alright, thank you."
"No problem at all. I'll go and prepare it now."
After he finished his words, he turned around and left.
Emmeline remained at the same spot and watched Jara for a while before she turned around and went to the dining room.
In the dining room, Uncle Poick had already ordered the servants to quickly serve breakfast.
Even though it was just breakfast, it was still exquisite and luxurious.
To Emmeline surprise, she noticed several of her favourite food on the table. She was not sure if this was a coincidence or Uncle Poick had specially prepared it for her.
However, since it was served, she did not think too much about it as she pulled out a chair and sat down.
Around ten minutes later, Jara came into the house.
As soon as he entered the door and saw her sitting there, he didn't look surprised at all. It seemed that he had already expected that she would come to see him this morning.
After handing the dogs to the servant, he went to wash his hands, then came over to sit down.
"Have you made up your mind last night?"
He asked as he wiped his hands with a towel.
Hearing that, Emmeline was silent for a while.
In the depths of her heart, she didn't want to accept the cruel truth. However, she knew that Jara wouldn't lie to her. There was no reason to, and it was unnecessary.
