Chapter 983 A Street Fight

With Anderson and Clarissa in the group, Mr. Jenkins put out the red carpet.
They were booked into the largest and most luxurious hotel in Ashax country.
After they had checked in, Clarissa was happy that Sierra and Robert were in a room next to hers. She was grateful to Mr. Jenkins for this thoughtful arrangement.
Chantel was pleased that her room was on the other side, away from Anderson so that she would not run into him.
After storing away their luggage, they went out for dinner.
Since Clarissa was pregnant, her appetite had increased. Every two hours or so, she was hungry.
In his bag, Anderson would keep some snacks for Clarissa, instead of the multi-million contracts that people thought should be in the president's bag.
No one would believe that the president's bag would contain chocolate and energy bars.
Clarissa took a bite of the snacks offered by Anderson. With a satisfied smile, she said, "It's nice that there's more to eat."
Across from her, Sierra said with a smile, "Now that you're pregnant, you'll get hungry easily. But, watch what you eat. The baby's head may grow big, and childbirth will be difficult."
Beaming with smiles, Clarissa said, "All right, Mom. I understand."
To show her sincerity, Clarissa returned the uneaten snacks and stopped eating.
Anderson observed that, poured her a glass of water, and said,
"Have a drink instead?"
"All right."
Clarissa accepted the glass and took a sip.
Just then, Mr. Jenkins showed up.
He put on his most polite smile and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Jordan, Dr. Lane, Miss Campos, Miss Jordan, I have ordered the best dinner available. Have a go. If it's not to your taste, I'll have it changed."
Sierra smiled, "Tobias, thank you for your trouble."
Again smiling politely, Mr. Jenkins said, "Not at all. You're not familiar here. I'm here at least five or six times a year on business. Sometimes, I stayed for half a year to keep an eye on the jade mine."
Clarissa swallowed some water and asked, "How long have you been in the jade mine business?"
Mr. Jenkins replied, "More than ten years. Previously, there were a lot more jade mines in Ashax Country.  Over the last few years, these mines were mined extensively. There aren't many good ones left."
Then, he reassured them as they might lose confidence.
"But, this jade mine that I introduce is the best mine within the last ten years. I never told anyone except Miss Jordan when she was here. Perhaps this is fate."
It was rare for Chantel to receive a compliment. She smiled proudly and said,
"Of course. I've been in business for so long. Not that I'm boasting, but when it comes to luck and foresight, no one is better than I am."
Not wanting to contradict her, Anderson kept quiet while Clarissa gave a faint smile.
Only Sierra naively praised her, "Really? That's amazing, Miss Jordan."
Flushed with delight, Chantel waved off the praise, smiled, and said, "Not at all. It's nothing extraordinary."
Soon after, the waiters came to serve dinner.
The dishes were like pieces of fine art carefully laid out on the table. Each of them looked, tasted, and smelled good, tantalizing their taste buds.
Clarissa excitedly picked up her fork and started to eat.
The others too started to eat when suddenly, loud riotous sounds came in from outside.
All of them were stunned and looked outside where the noise was coming from.
Other guests in the dining hall also stopped eating and went out to see what was causing the noise.
Mr. Jenkins told them, "You go ahead and eat. I'll go out and see what's happening."
Anderson nodded, and Mr. Jenkins left. Then, Anderson scooped a bowl of soup for Clarissa. He offered the bowl to Clarissa, saying gently, "Drink some soup to warm your tummy."
Clarissa nodded and filled a bowl for Sierra, "Mom, have a bowl too."
The noise unsettled Sierra as she was always afraid of these sudden happenings. When Clarissa handed her the bowl, she realized that she was surrounded by people. Then, she began to relax a little.
Putting on a smile, she nodded and took the bowl.
Clarissa noticed Sierra's tension, held her hand, and comforted her softly, "Mom, take it easy. Maybe some locals are fighting. Nothing to do with us."
Meanwhile, Robert held Sierra's other hand and said, "Clarissa is right. Don't be nervous. If there's anything, we're here and will protect you."
Their warm assurances allayed Sierra's tensions.
Then, Sierra nodded with a smile and said, "I know. I'm relaxed. Don't worry about me."
At this time, Chantel could not contain herself anymore.
She loved to have fun, so she stopped eating and put down her cutlery. Then as she walked out, she said, "Y'all carry on eating. Don't wait for me. I'm going out to have a look."
Anderson could not stop her.
In a short while, Chantel and Mr. Jenkins came back together.
Chantel's face was full of excitement as she explained, "This country is so different. Y'all should have seen it. A small man of 1.5 meters nearly beat a 1.8 meters man to death. His martial skills really scared me to death."
Her words startled Clarissa, "A fight?"
Mr. Jenkins said with a smile, "It's not a fight. People here are well built and strong. Martial art is a hobby. Perhaps the two of them had grudges and slugged it out when they met. In the heat of the moment, one got badly injured."
To which, Anderson added, "The T-class boxing practiced here is very powerful. It is rumored that nine out of ten men practice it."
Then, Clarissa poked fun at him and asked, "So, who is better. You or them?"
Her words touched his raw nerve, and Anderson asked darkly, "Who do you think?"
The way he spoke and looked sent Clarissa a message loud and clear. A shiver ran through her, and she immediately praised him, "Of course, it's you."
Anderson gave a dry laugh.
Their frivolous play-acting was apparent to Mr. Jenkins seated opposite. His eyes flashed, as he understood how important Clarissa was to Anderson.
So, it was not necessarily true that there was no love in wealthy and powerful families.
At the very least, this Mrs. Jordan was unlike those rich wives that he had met before.
After dinner, they went for a stroll in the city with Mr. Jenkins as their guide.
Ashax Country was so different from Ascijian, whether it was customs, social interactions, architecture, or food.
Although Clarissa had been to many places, this was her first trip to Ashax Country.
As for Anderson, he had been here twice. Both his trips were for business purposes. He was always accompanied by a group of people. There was never a time for him to relax and explore the place. So, he was just as unfamiliar with Ashax country as Clarissa.
Chantel had never been to Ashax Country either. However, she had watched a lot of soap operas from Ashax Country and picked up some of the customs and cultures.
