Chapter 978 A Weight off Her Shoulders
"So, you never doubted him?"
The moment Sierra heard Clarissa's question, bewilderment and confusion filled her eyes.
"Why should I suspect him? He is the person who treats me the best in the world. There's no reason to doubt him."
Her innocent look gave Clarissa a headache.
Feeling helpless, she sighed, "Well, even so, why are you running away from me? I know that you are leaving in a hurry because of me."
When Sierra heard that, she nervously interlaced her fingers, as if the lies that she had tried so hard to hide were exposed.
"I... I didn't mean to hide from you. I am just afraid..."
"Afraid?" Clarissa raised her brows. "What are you afraid of?"
"I..." At once, she panicked, and her eyes darted around as if she was looking for something.
Clarissa knew that she was looking for Robert.
It seemed like Robert was her backbone right now. If he left her sight, she would lose her composure.
Although Clarissa was not a psychologist, she had some knowledge about psychology.
After observing Sierra's current condition, she discovered that Sierra was highly likely to have posttraumatic stress disorder.
In the past, Sierra had suffered trauma. Not only the person whom she trusted the most had betrayed her, but he even wanted to kill her.
As a result, she became terrified and uneasy. Even though now she had lost all her memories, the fear was still deeply instilled in her subconsciousness.
Robert was her rescuer.
He was like a life-saving straw that she clung to when she was drowning. Ever since then, he became the only sunshine in her life, to which she refused to let go.
To her, everything around her was strange and horrifying except him. He was the only person she could believe and rely on.
Thinking about that, Clarissa suddenly felt relieved.
What was she fussing about?
Just like what Anderson told her—the fact that Sierra was able to survive that huge accident was already a great blessing from God.
So, instead of blaming and complaining, she should cherish Sierra and make up for the ten years they had lost.
When that thought crossed Clarissa's mind, a smile appeared on the corner of her mouth.
"Well, you don't have to say it if you are not comfortable to."
After a pause, she tentatively asked, "Can I... get a little closer to you?"
Hearing that, Sierra was shocked. She lifted her head and looked at Clarissa in a daze.
While approaching Sierra carefully, Clarissa added, "Don't be afraid. I am your daughter, and I won't hurt you. Besides, I love you as much as Robert did, so don't worry. It's just that I miss you dearly, and I want to get closer to you. Please don't hide from me, okay?"
Sierra stared at her blankly. Perhaps, she understood Clarissa's words, so even though her body was visibly nervous, she stayed still.
Finally, Clarissa stopped in front of Sierra.
Then, she wrapped her arms around Sierra's shoulders and embraced her.
"Mom."
When she said that word, tears had already welled up in her eyes.
On the other hand, Sierra stood there in a daze. As if she could sense Clarissa's emotions, she also hugged Clarissa.
"Mom, I'm glad to see that you're fine. Throughout these years, I keep dreaming about our moments together when I was a child. I thought I would never see you again, but I'm very grateful that we reunite. You don't have to recall all those painful memories and remember me, but Mom, please don't hide from me anymore, okay?"
For some reason, even though Sierra could not remember anything, her eyes started to tear up as well.
"Alright, I won't hide from you anymore."
She replied softly.
Clarissa was pleasantly surprised. Then, she let go of Sierra and held her hand.
"Really?"
By this time, Sierra had let down her guard against Clarissa. Although she wasn't as affectionate as Clarissa, she no longer repelled Clarissa.
With a bashful smile, she responded with a nod.
Seeing that, Clarissa was over the moon.
"Mom, I promise you that I will never bother you if you hate it. But if you are unhappy or someone bullies you, you have to tell me, okay?"
Once again, Sierra smiled. After a moment, she responded, "I'm fine. No one is bullying me."
Even after ten years, her kind and pure appearance were still the same.
Looking at her, Clarissa sighed helplessly.
"Alright then!"
For a moment, she paused before asking, "Have you decided on your next destination?"
Sierra shook her head. "I'm not lying. We haven't decided where to go next. Although... we did suddenly plan to leave due to my fear of your presence... I'm sorry, Clarissa! I didn't mean that! I mean, I'm not afraid of you..."
As if she realized something, she suddenly became nervous and hurriedly explained.
Right away, Clarissa interrupted her and comforted, "Chill, Mom. I know you're not afraid of me. You're just afraid that I'll remind you of that painful past, aren't you?"
Sierra paused for a few seconds before nodding.
After letting out a sigh of relief, Clarissa assured her, "Don't be afraid and don't worry. Since you don't want to remember the past, let's pretend that nothing has happened, and we won't talk about it, alright?"
Only then, Sierra nodded at ease.
With a smile, Clarissa suggested, "Since you haven't decided where to go, why don't you stay in Flaucford for a few more days? I don't believe that you have visited all the places, and I know a few good places that you should go to. So, stay here for a few more days, and I'll bring you there, okay?"
Upon listening to what she said, Sierra hesitated.
Even so, she was a soft-hearted woman. As soon as Clarissa showed an imploring expression, she gave in.
"Well, sure."
Overjoyed, Clarissa grinned ear to ear.
Meanwhile, outside the reception room.
The three men stood there in silence.
Although Robert was his friend, and Anderson was likely to be his future business partner, Mr. Jenkins was awkward.
As he was considered an outsider, he felt a sense of abruptness when he stood there.
However, there was only Sierra and Clarissa in the room. Besides, it was Robert and Sierra's first visit here, so he thought he should stay around.
After all, Sierra no longer remembered that Clarissa was her daughter.
