Chapter 593 He Stood Me Up
Suddenly Iris felt a little embarrassed to be scolded by her daughter at such an old age.
However, she realized that Evelyn's words made sense.
She just got too anxious that she spoke without thinking.
So, without retort, she just went with it and said, "Okay. Okay. I got it."
Only then did Evelyn smile and stand up confidently.
"Then I'll call him right now."
"Okay."
Evelyn found Forbos's phone number and called him.
A few rings later and the call was connected.
On other end of the phone, she could hear Forbos's casual voice.
"Hello, who's this?"
With a sullen face, Evelyn said, "It's me."
After she said that, a brief moment of silence could be heard on the other end.
Then, she heard him laughing as he said, "Oh, it's you. What's up?"
"You promised yesterday that we would go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get a divorce. Why don't you come over now?"
"Oh!" Forbos suddenly slapped his head. "Look at me. How could I forget something so important? Hehe... I'm sorry. I got carried away and drank too much last night. I just woke up. Have you… talked to your mother about it?"
Evelyn frowned. Somehow, she felt that there was something wrong with Forbos's tone.
She said softly, "You promised. When are you coming over?"
"It's... It's not too convenient for me right now. How about you give me a few minutes? I will call you as soon as I'm done here."
Once he said that, Evelyn had no other choice.
She looked at the time and realized that it was only ten in the morning.
Since there was no point being in a hurry, she just agreed.
"Okay, then I'll wait for your call."
"Alright."
After she hung up the phone, Iris looked at her worriedly. "How did it go? When is he coming over?"
Evelyn frowned. Although she had a bad feeling in her heart, she didn't want her mother to worry so she didn't tell her about it.
She just shook her head and said, "He has to deal with something right now and he will come over as soon as he's done. Anyway, the Civil Affairs Bureau is open till five thirty in the evening. We should be in time."
Upon hearing that, Iris just nodded her head.
Because she was worried about her mother going alone with Forbos, Evelyn wanted to accompany her.
But since she was not sure when Forbos would come, she just stayed in the hospital all day today.
All the time, she thought that Forbos would call her once he was done with his work.
However, after waiting for five whole hours, there wasn't a call from him at all.
As soon as she realized it was almost three in the afternoon, Evelyn started getting a little bit anxious and called him.
But she didn't expect the phone to be disconnected when she called.
Her expression changed. Because she wasn't sure if Forbos wasn't picking up her call on purpose or something had happened to him.
So, all she could do was keep trying to call him.
However, she tried calling him till six in the evening and the call still didn't go through.
In an instant, Evelyn sulked.
Looking at the terrible expression on her face, Iris could only console her and say, "It's okay. We can do it tomorrow. After all, for someone who loves money so much, he can't possibly pass on the chance for that much money when it's just there staring him in the face."
After hearing that, Evelyn thought about it for a moment and agreed with her.
Based on how greedy Forbos was, he didn't care about the marriage as long as she had money. So, if there was money on the line, he wouldn't not go.
With this thought in mind, she did not think any further.
She waited until 8 o'clock in the evening, but there was still no phone call from Forbos. Since she had an event tomorrow, she couldn't stay in the hospital any longer so she left.
The next day, the heart that matched Iris had arrived to the hospital on time.
It was signed and received by St. Peter Hospital. After inspection, it was confirmed to be compatible with Iris's blood type as well.
After getting the news, Evelyn specially made a phone call to thank Clarissa. Then, she had a discussion with the doctors and they decided that they will go ahead with the surgery next week.
This news was once of the best news she had heard in a very long time.
Because of that, Evelyn was in a very good mood.
After they confirmed their schedules, she and Marissa also decided that their movie with Anthonywould also be scheduled to begin shooting next week.
In order to be by her mother's side during the surgery, Evelyn specially asked the director for a few days off. So, she wouldn't have to attend the opening ceremony but instead start filming once filming began.
After finding out what was going on with her, the director was also very understanding with the leave request.
He even told her not to be too anxious and just keep her mother company until she fully recovered.
After all, it wouldn't make much of a difference to the filming if it was delayed by two or three days.
That was when Evelyn finally decided.
After everything was arranged, she just waited for her mother's surgery date with complete peace of mind.
However, something kept nagging at her from the back of her mind. Even since the day Forbos stood her up, it seemed like he had completely disappeared from thin air. She never heard from him again.
Normally, it would be good news for Evelyn and Iris if there wasn't any news from him.
But this time, Evelyn felt uneasy instead.
It was as if he was waiting in ambush while she was out in the open and defenseless. She would never know when he would take the opportunity to pounce on her.
But then again, she didn't know Forbos's usual haunts so she couldn't look for him anyway. So, no matter how much she worried about this, she had no choice but to just wait and see.
Fortunately, Iris's surgery date came very quickly.
All the arrangements were perfectly done. Marty even hired a globally-renowned heart surgeon as the operating doctor. Under his knife, the success rate of Iris's surgery was pretty high.
In a sterile uniform, Evelyn personally walked her mother into the operating theater. After she walked her in, because no family members were allowed in the theater, she had no choice but to leave.
Today, Marty even specially came over to keep her company.
After all, Evelyn would definitely be nervous on such an important day so it would be better if someone was there to keep her company. That was why she never said anything about it.
After getting them some drinks, Carrie also waited outside with them.
While she was observing, she had realized that Marty and Evelyn's relationship was no longer like before.
But as for the details, since Evelyn didn't tell her, she didn't dare to ask.
The whole surgery lasted for seven hours.
After all, it was considered to be a very complicated major surgery.
At eight the evening, when the operation was finally over, the doctor emerged from the operating room. As he took off his mask, he said to Evelyn, "Congratulations, the operation was a success. The patient just has to go through the next 48 hours without any signs of rejection and she should be out of danger."
After she heard that, Evelyn was overjoyed.
She was so relieved that she almost burst into tears.
Immediately, she kept bowing to the doctor and saying, "Thank you, thank you."
Other than putting a smile on his face, the doctor didn't say much and didn't even stop her from thanking him so much.
That was because he knew that allowing her to say it will help calm her down and make her feel better.
After that, she turned to look at Marty and smiled in relief. "You have my gratitude."
As soon as Marty heard her words, the nervous and tense expression that he had on his face all this while melted into relief.
