Chapter 726 There Is Something Odd With This Person

The man rubbed his hands in glee and replied with a grin, "No rush. I'm just here to look around."
He walked around the kitchen as he spoke. After a few rounds, he walked behind the stove.
"Hey, aren't you the lady Uncle Jasper rescued? What's your name?"
He was talking to Nora.
Reluctantly, Nora raised her head and shot him a contemptuous, sarcastic look and asked in return,
"What's that got to do with you?"
The man was thrown off-guard.
He did not know how to react for a moment.
"What did you say?"
"You can't even understand what I said, yet you want to ask for my name?" Nora retorted.
The man froze. There was no mistake what she meant this time.
Perhaps he had never met such a fiery personality, for it took him a while before he snickered,
"Pfft. You're hot-tempered, huh. I like it."
Nora glared fiercely at him again.
How she wished she could hurl the fire tongs at him.
But for now, she had to suppress this urge.
There must not be any confrontation with these people before she had recovered from her leg fracture.
So, she did not aggravate the man any further.
The man felt foolish that he could not start a conversation with her. After loitering for a while, he stuck his hands in his pocket and walked out.
Throughout all this, Clarissa sat motionless at the door.
The man walked to the table in the center of the dining hall and sat down on one of the wooden stools. It was then that Clarissa heard him complaining loudly to Uncle Jasper, "That girl's temper is bad. When I bring her back, I'll teach her a lesson."
Loud laughter followed immediately.
Uncle Jasper was heard replying, "That's your business. If you want to, you can bring her back now. The sooner you start, the sooner she's trained."
The man immediately retorted, "That won't do. The girl must be in good shape before I take delivery. I am not going to pay for the doctor's visit and medicine for her injury."
Uncle Jasper did not make any reply.
Clarissa stopped trying to listen to their conversation and smiled grimly.
Of course, the dinner was a sumptuous one.
Not all the men stayed for the meal.
Clarissa recognized one of the two who stayed back as the man whom she saw talking to Uncle Jasper in the middle of the night.
Throughout dinner, the man kept staring at Clarissa and occasionally offered her some food.
He kept smiling warmly and cajoled, "Have more food. Ladies from the city are dainty and watch what they eat. If you don't eat, how are you going to recover fast?"
Clarissa just smiled and did not reply.
Instead, she quietly pushed the food he offered to the side and did not eat a single bite.
All through dinner, Nora looked stone-faced at the two men.
Uncle Jasper noticed the girl's antics. While he did not say anything, his eyebrows were knitted in deep thought.
After a meal, Clarissa helped to clear the table before assisting Nora back to their room.
Back in their room, Nora dropped all pretenses and angrily said,
"What the heck? He plans to sell us to these sorts of people?"
Realizing that Nora was about to blow her top, Clarrisa quickly put a finger to her own lips, telling her to keep her voice down.
Immediately, Nora understood that Uncle Jasper and Aunt Emma might be outside.
She was speaking loudly, and it would be terrible if they overheard her.
Her face dropped, and she did not continue speaking.
Clarissa sat beside her on the bed and whispered, "The situation is worse than we think. I feel that they will make a move before one month is up. We must do something before that."
Nora was a little puzzled, "But what can we do now?"
Clarissa was tight-lipped as she thought for a while before she proposed, "The next few days, I will find opportunities to survey and map out the surrounding terrain. You make sure you recover as fast as possible. Your recovery is the most important deciding factor."
Nora started to blame herself all over again.
"Clarissa, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. Had I not been injured..."
Her whining made Clarissa laugh.
Feeling sympathetic, she stretched out and patted Nora's head, "Silly girl. Don't talk rubbish. If not for you, I would have died on the plane and wouldn't be alive today."
In Clarissa's heart, Nora was a bodyguard as well as a friend.
Under no circumstances would Clarissa abandon Nora.
Nora was comforted by Clarissa's words and stop blaming herself. They continued to discuss their plans until dusk fell, and it was when Aunt Emma called out for Clarissa. Then, Clarissa went downstairs.
She helped Aunt Emma to prepare dinner.
Noticing the flowers laid out to dry at the back of the kitchen, Aunt Emma advised, "It may rain tonight. Gather your flowers so that they won't get wet."
Clarissa answered in the affirmative.
When she was collecting her flowers, she saw Uncle Jasper enter the front of the house.
She was not sure, but Uncle Jasper looked like he was in a cranky mood.
It looked like some incident happened outside.
Clarissa's instinct told her to be on guard.
During dinner, Clarissa pretended to be innocent as she asked, "Uncle Jasper, are there really wolves in the mountain opposite?"
Uncle Jasper raised his head and looked at her with unfriendliness. "Who told you so?"
Aunt Emma panicked and hurriedly answered, "I did. On the way back today, Maxi said the mountain opposite looks lovely, and she wants to go and visit. I warned her that there are wolves."
There was a glint in Uncle Jasper's eyes.
Clarissa flashed her most sincere smile and added, "Yes. As you know, we were here to visit and experience the countryside. So when we see a beautiful place, we feel like wanting to visit that place."
She made up an excuse to avoid arousing Uncle Jasper's suspicion.
Uncle Jasper gave a sarcastic laugh and warned menacingly, "Oh. You cannot go there. That place is dangerous. Should anything happen, there'll be no one to help you."
Clarissa pretended to be earnest and nodded, "I see."
"Yeah," replied Uncle Jasper.
This atmosphere over dinner was highly-strung.
Even if Nora did not pay much attention to their expressions, she could sense that something was amiss with Uncle Jasper.
After dinner, Clarissa and Nora were chased back to their room by Uncle Jasper.
They were puzzled as this was the first time they were sent back to their room this early.
This reinforced her suspicions that some incident must have happened.
Some incident that changed Uncle Jasper's attitude towards them.
In Clarissa's heart, she felt a premonition that something bad was going to happen. She believed that both of them could not stay passive anymore.
In the middle of the night, when the lights outside had dimmed, she felt her way to the room door. She thought of going out to find out what upset Uncle Jasper.
Unexpectedly, the door refused to budge when she pushed to open it.
Clarissa's heart dropped.
Nora was lying in bed as usual as she avoided walking unless it was necessary.
Seeing Clarissa standing there motionless with her back facing Nora, Nora asked out of curiosity, "What's wrong?"
With that, Clarissa answered in dismay, "The door is locked from the outside."
