Chapter 654 Helpless

"But only after I came to Blaine family today that I realized certain prejudice is embedded deep down the bones, and it would always stay the same."
After a pause, suddenly, she picked up the glass on the table with a solemnly faced, and said to Buckley, "In that case, I don't need to try anymore. Mr. Blaine, thank you for what you said to my father. I believe that he will be comforted by what you have said in the netherworld. As for the rest, let's leave it to fate. There is no need to force it."
With that, she gulped the glass of wine.
When Buckley saw that, his brows furrowed deeply.
However, in the end, he still let out a sigh.
Also picking up the glass of wine in front of him, he drank it in one gulp.
Then he sighed again. "I know, you are a good girl. Charlotte is..."
Suddenly, something came into his mind, and a complicated look flashed across his eyes, then he shook his head.
"Forget it. Let's not talk about it. Please continue to eat. I'll go check on her."
After that, he got up and left the table.
As a nice dinner was ruined, the rest of them that were left on the table naturally didn't have the mood to continue eating.
At the moment, Marty was a little regretful to listen to his father for bringing Evelyn home, which resulted in her being wronged for no reason.
Most importantly, he knew that the true reason why Evelyn said that earlier was not only because she was embarrassed by Charlotte.
It was also because she mentioned her mother.
As a daughter, it was unacceptable to see her parents being humiliated because of her.
What Charlotte had done today was not that insulting to Evelyn's mother.
But everyone present could feel the disdain in her words.
And he believed that any young lady with courage and uprightness would not be willing to endure such vicious language and attitude.
In the end, everyone finished their meal in silence and left the table.
Then, Marty didn't stay in the Blaine residence any longer. After dinner, he left with Evelyn.
On his way home, he was holding Evelyn's hand while driving.
Neither of them spoke at first.
The atmosphere in the car was quiet.
Evelyn placed her hand on the car window, resting her chin on her hand as she looked out of the window.
As the cold winter breeze blew on her fringe, she looked beautiful with a touch of sorrow.
Some time had passed, and Marty finally couldn't hold it in anymore.
Then, he said softly, "It's cold at night, be careful not to catch a cold."
As he spoke, he closed the car window.
Indeed, her face and hands were cold after being blown by the cold wind. However, she did not dislike this feeling. In fact, she even liked it.
Because this cold feeling could keep clear her thoughts and prevent her from being stranded by her emotions.
Turning her head, she looked at Marty.
"Why do you think your mom hates me so much?"
In fact, she never knew the reason she was hated this whole time.
One might say the reason Charlottle hated her when she was young was that she felt the Hussain family's social status was lower and was not a match for the Blaine family.
But now, she had become a famous actress in the entertainment industry through her own efforts.
In terms of wealth, income, and influence, they were not bad.
Even if she couldn't compare with the daughters of those wealthy families, there was no way that anyone would say she was not a match for the Blaine family.
What's more, she was only 23 years old now.
The road ahead was so long. As long as she was willing to work hard, her future would be unstoppable.
Why did Charlotte hate her so much that she didn't even want to give her a chance?
After hearing this question, Marty fell silent.
In truth, he did not even know the answer to this question.
It was as if there was no source to Charlotte's malicious intent, and it seemed to appear out of thin air.
With the thought in mind, he suddenly realized something and slightly knitted his brows.
Then, he consoled her. "Everyone has their own interests. We don't have to change ourselves for others."
After a pause, he continued, "No matter what she thinks, as long as we are happy together, that's enough."
Looking at him quietly, Evelyn noticed that he knitted his eyebrows slightly and smiled.
"But you will always be sandwiched in the middle because of me, won't you?"
Hearing that, Marty raised his eyebrows.
Then, Evelyn smiled again, but there was a little desolation in her smile.
Turning away, she looked ahead, but her gaze was not fixed on anything. Instead, it fell on the vague night sky.
"In the past, I always thought that as long as I work hard, I could make everyone like me. But now I understand. Even if I worked really hard, not everyone will like me. Marty, in the future, if your mother forced you to make a choice between her and me, even if you chose her and the family, I would not blame you, really."
As soon as she finished the sentence, Marty's face suddenly sank.
Then, he grabbed her hand and said in a deep voice, "That day will not come."
After a pause, he then said in a louder tone, "I promise that day will never come."
Evelyn felt the seriousness in Marty's face. After staying silent for a few seconds, she smiled and replied, "Okay, I believe you."
It didn't take long before they arrived home.
After getting out of the car, the two of them walked into the house hand in hand.
The servants had already prepared hot cocoa for them. After entering the house, they each drank a cup of it to warm themselves up before going upstairs to rest.
Iris's schedule was regular. Since it was already ten o'clock at night, she had already fallen asleep.
While rubbing her sore shoulders, Evelyn suddenly asked, "Isn't it the New Years' in half a month's time?"
Stunned, Marty looked at the date on his phone and remembered that it seemed to be the case.
Smiling as he walked over, he sat down with Evelyn in his arms, letting her sit on his lap.
Then he asked, "What do you want to do for this year's New Year?"
After some thought, she hook her head.
With a smile, he stretched out his hand and gently rubbed her little nose.
"Since Mom is here. Let's schedule a time and travel somewhere."
When Evelyn heard the idea, her eyes lit up.
"Really?"
But immediately, she thought of something and the smile on her face darkened.
"But don't you need to go home to accompany your parents..."
Upon hearing Evelyn's concern, Marty shook his head.
While holding on to Evelyn's hand, he said, "They have my big brother."
That's right, they still had Roland with them, so even if Marty wasn't at home, the Blaine family wouldn't be too quiet.
But to Evelyn, he was the only one she had.
If he wasn't here, it would be really quiet here.
Knowing what he was thinking, Evelyn was overwhelmingly touched, as she put her arms around his neck and kissed him on the face.
"Thank you."
Seeing that, Marty smiled.
"Since you want to thank me, shouldn't you show some sincerity?"
Confused, Evelyn subconsciously asked. "What do you mean by 'sincerity'?"
Then, Marty said seriously, "Evelyn, we have been married for so long, but I haven't even heard you call me hubby."
