Chapter 359 I'll Never Agree To It
Lara was stunned as she turned around.
Gabriela quickly smiled to cover up her deliberateness.
Lara raised her eyebrows as she immediately caught the undertone of her question. Lara then explained, "Did you mean the butterfly birthmark on the back? It existed when I was a child. Later, it gradually disappeared when I grew up."
She answered in a nonchalant tone, and did not sound nervous or guilty at all. It was as if she was talking about something ordinary.
Gabriela pursed her lips.
"I see. I didn't know the birthmark can disappear by itself, it's so magical."
Lara smiled and said, "Yes, but it's not impossible. After all, it's just a pigment in skin. It's a common occurrence in medicine."
Gabriela nodded.
"I see."
The two of them didn't share any common topics to talk about. After eating, they didn't go back to the hot spring pools. After resting for a while, they went back home.
When Old Master Levine heard that they went out together in the afternoon, he frowned. He had a bad feeling about it.
Although he was a man, he knew how girls' minds work.
Since Lara returned to the Levine family, Gabriela had been very indifferent to her.
Logically speaking, Gabriela would not bother with her after what happened last night. Besides, she should be mocking Lara instead.
But not only did she not mock her, Gabriela had even asked Lara out after lunch.
Old Master Levine sensed that something was wrong, so when Gabriela and Lara returned home, he secretly called Gabriela to come over.
"Grandpa, are you looking for me?"
Gabriela walked into the room and asked respectfully.
At this moment, Old Master Levine was sitting on a rocking chair with his eyes closed.
Upon hearing her words, he opened his eyes and motioned for her to close the door.
Gabriela turned around and closed the door before walking towards him.
"Grandpa, what can I do for you?"
Old Master Levine stared at her and asked in a low voice, "Where did you take Lara to just now?"
Gabriela was stunned as she pursed her lips.
She lowered her head slightly and whispered, "We didn't go anywhere else. I took her to the newly opened hot spring villa for a while."
Old Master Levine looked at her suspiciously. "Really?"
Gabriela gave a self-deprecating smile.
"If you don't believe me, you can ask Lara about it. Or are you still worried that I will bully her?"
Old Master Levine frowned.
After a while, he said, "You don't have to say that just to get a reaction out of me. Although Lara is back now, you are both equally important to me. I have treated you as my own granddaughter since you were a child."
Gabriela stood there in silence.
Old master Levine paused for a few seconds and suddenly asked, "Did you know that the Holland family rejected the marriage between Lara and Jaden last night?"
Gabriela nodded and said, "I know."
"What do you think about this?"
Gabriela was stunned.
She looked at Old Master Levine and felt a little confused.
"I... Nothing"
She had nothing to do with what happened between Lara and Jaden, so why should she have any idea about it?
But when Old Master Levine heard her response, he was obviously not very satisfied.
He frowned and glanced at her. He was a little angry at how unambitious she was.
"What do you think of Jaden?"
Gabriela stood there in a daze. After a few seconds, a hint of disbelief flashed in her eyes as she realized something.
"Grandpa, why did you ask?"
Old Master Levine snorted. "What else can it be? Lara is not capable enough to keep such a good man. But I'm sure you can.
"Gabriela, you were raised by me from a young age. You're different from her. You're a real noble lady. If you marry into the Holland family, the Holland family won't have any objections. You can also help our family in the future. What do you think?"
Gabriela shuddered in shock.
She hadn't thought that Old Master Levine would make such a request to her.
Her face quickly fell and she looked at him in disbelief. She said in a low voice, "Grandpa, are you trying to ask me to replace Lara after she failed to marry to the Holland family? Do you want to force me to marry a man that she doesn't want?"
Old Master Levine furrowed his brows and he said angrily, "Nonsense! What are you talking about? Although Jaden is the youngest son of the Holland family, he has always been a kind and capable person. The most important thing is he is good-looking too.
Besides, in the past, although we tried to arrange a marriage between Lara and Jaden, they have never been together. How did he end up being rejected by Lara?"
Without thinking, Gabriela directly turned him down angrily, "I don't agree!"
Old Master Levine looked livid.
"Why not?"
"Grandpa, I am your granddaughter, not the tool for the exchange of your interests. I know that you have always wanted one of us to marry the Holland family to secure a bright future for the Levine family.
"But I think we should rely on our own capability to achieve that, instead of using our marriage as the leverage! If we don't have that ability, even if we try our best to marry into the Holland family, we will only be looked down upon by others. What's the difference between that and begging?"
Old Master Levine's face fell right away as he growled, "What are you talking about? Our family is not inferior to the Holland family at all. Begging? How do you think your delicate life now comes from? Do you really think things like powers and interests can be obtained by your own ability?"
"Flaucford city is a complicated place. You can't imagine how complicated the relationship, interests, and the network are. The arranged marriage between us and the Holland family is to save for a rainy day. Otherwise, what can Gillee and Gimmy achieve when I kick the bucket in the future? Do you think you will still be the noble lady of the Levine family by that time?"
Gabriela shook her head.
"Even if I'm not a noble lady anymore, it's better than marrying someone I don't like."
"Nonsense! You are still young. Love and freedom are not everything. Only people who have nothing will believe this. True freedom can only be obtained by you at the top of the food chain. Do you understand?"
Gabriela found it ridiculous.
She always knew that Old Master Levine was greedy for power.
Previously, he did think of using her marriage as the leverage.
But later on, he had given up on her, so Gabriela thought that he would not mention it again.
She didn't expect that he would actually propose for her to marry Jaden today!
Gabriela laughed in a self-deprecating way.
"I don't understand your words. I don't care about being at the top of the food chain. As for the glory of the family, grandpa, you can ask me to do whatever you want, but please don't use my marriage to satisfy your own desires. I can't do it, and I will never agree to it!"
