Chapter 546 Her Past
Filled with hope, Evelyn held Marty's hand with her right hand, hoping that he could save her.
Now, it was as if Evelyn had caught onto the last glimmer of hope, and she didn't want to let go of it at all.
Marty frowned, glanced coldly at the group of people in front of him, and pulled her over.
"It's okay. I'm here."
He took off his coat and put it on her, consoling her all the time.
That was because some of Evelyn's clothes had already been ripped apart by those men.
However, since she had always been protecting the piece of clothing on her chest, she was able to protect herself from suffering from further humiliation.
The group of people in front of him were shocked by the sudden turn of events. Marty was a stranger to them, so they thought he had inadvertently barged in.
The group of people said with a fierce look, "Hey, brat, it's none of your business. Get the hell out of here immediately."
As he spoke, he stretched out his hand and pointed at her.
However, just as he reached out his hand into mid-air, a scream followed.
"Ah— !"
Two bodyguards jumped out from somewhere behind Marty and immediately twisted his hand and pinned him on the table next to him.
The rest of the people were frightened by this turn of events. They all took a step back and stared at Marty in shock.
"Who... Who are you?"
Marty looked at him coldly and didn't bother to answer.
He held Evelyn in his arms and said in a cold voice, "I'll give you two choices. Either you kneel down and apologize to her, or... I'll cripple the hand you laid on her!"
As soon as the voice fell, the bodyguard grabbed the man's wrist and exerted more strength. Suddenly, a piercing scream could be heard.
The group of people was scared out of their wits. They seemed to be tough on the surface, but in fact, they were just a group of hooligans who were good-for-nothing.
Usually, they relied on blackmailing others for a living. It had become their instincts to pick on the weaker individuals rather than the stronger ones.
They had no issue with bullying a person like Evelyn, but when they came across someone who was a little stronger, they would rather back off.
After all, although they didn't know Marty, they could tell from the bodyguards behind him that he was not someone to be trifled with.
Coupled with Marty's noble bearing, it was obvious that he either came from a rich or noble family.
They just wanted to get some money. Evelyn was a public figure without a strong family background. Besides, she was born into a poor family. Even if she was bullied, she would not dare to make it public.
But Marty was different.
That was why the group of people wanted to retreat.
Seeing this, Evelyn's adoptive father immediately became anxious.
He didn't want to let go of this hard-earned opportunity. Otherwise, it wouldn't be easy to trick Evelyn into meeting him again.
He quickly said, "Don't listen to him. There are only three of them, and we have so many people on our side. If we get into a fight, we might not necessarily lose. There is no way they're going to scare us away with just a few words!"
Then, he turned to Evelyn with a twisted face and said, "D*mn, I'm your father after all. How can you work with an outsider and do this to me? Come over here!"
Evelyn looked at him coldly, with anger hidden in her eyes.
Marty was stunned when he heard his words.
He gazed down at the woman in his arms subconsciously and asked, "What did he say? He is your father?"
Although Evelyn's biological father, Finneas Hussain, had left the courtyard earlier that year, Marty remembered that he didn't look like this.
Besides, although Finneas came from a military background, he was a well-mannered and righteous person. He would never do such despicable things.
So what was going on?
Evelyn's face darkened and she explained, "He's my adopted father."
Her voice was very low, but Marty could hear it clearly.
He couldn't help but shudder.
Marty looked at Evelyn in disbelief.
For the past few years, the two of them had spent quite a bit of time together. However, because Marty thought that he understood her family well enough, coupled with his so-called respect for her, he had never investigated her behind her back.
Marty didn't even ask much about what she had experienced and how she grew up after being separated for so many years.
He had always thought that she had grown up ordinarily like all the other people.
He had never thought that she actually had... an adopted father?
If that person was really her adopted father, what about Finneas?
Where did Finneas go?
Marty had so many questions to ask, but at this moment, he could only hold it back because it was not the right timing to ask.
Marty held Evelyn in his arms and looked at the man opposite him, who looked like a rogue. He said coldly, "I don't care who you are. From now on, if you dare to mess with her again, I will make sure you pay the price!"
As his voice fell, the two bodyguards behind him took a step forward.
After all, they had undergone professional training. Their presence was frightening enough although they were just standing there expressionless.
Although some of the gangsters opposite him were not resigned, they also knew that it wouldn't do them any good if they made a scene. Therefore, they dared not speak for a while.
Marty then turned to leave with Evelyn in his arms.
......
In the car.
There was dead silence.
The bodyguards were all in a car in the back. In the car in which Marty and Evelyn were sitting, there were only two of them apart from the driver.
Marty's coat was draped over Evelyn's body as her clothes were ripped. Besides, this was a car Marty used for his daily commute, so his scent was everywhere around her.
Evelyn felt down and complicated at the same time.
After a long time, she finally spoke.
"Don't you have anything to ask me?"
When Marty heard these words, he finally shifted his gaze from the window and turned to look at her.
There was no other expression on that delicate and handsome face of his at this time, but Evelyn could tell that he was remorseful and his heart was aching.
She gave a violent shudder.
"When did this happen?"
He asked in a low and hoarse voice.
Evelyn looked at him and didn't quite understand. She said, "Hmm?"
Marty had to ask again, "When did Finneas pass away?"
Evelyn was stunned.
She recalled carefully and didn't remember when she told him about her father's death. Besides, Marty was not the kind of person who would investigate her past at will.
As a result, she asked in confusion, "How did you know that my father had passed away?"
The corner of Marty's lips curled up coldly. It wasn't clear if he was mocking himself or others.
"If he is still alive, you would never be bullied by such scum."
Evelyn was speechless.
It was just simple reasoning that she usually didn't pay attention to it and didn't think much about it.
But at some point in time, the other party would be keenly aware of and point it out casually, touching a weak spot in her.
Evelyn forced a smile. "When I was very young. It was probably when I was ten."
Marty frowned.
