Chapter 614 Nothing to Talk About
"Evelyn, how are you? Are you alright?"
As soon as Jeffrey was released, he immediately ran to Evelyn.
Knitting her brows slightly, she took a step back subconsciously when it came to facing Jeffrey's enthusiasm.
In an instant, Jeffrey's hands, which were about were about to reach out to hug her, were left hanging in the air.
Looking at him, Evelyn pursed her lips and whispered, "I'm fine. Thank you for your concern."
Upon hearing her alienated tone, it made Jeffrey's body stiffen a little.
As if realizing something, he slowly put his hands down, and after a moment, he forced a smile.
"It's good to know that you're alright. I was just worried about you, so I came over to check on you."
Hearing that, Evelyn nodded.
Then, they stopped talking.
The atmosphere was very awkward. They used to be good friends who talked to each other about everything, but now they had nothing to talk about anymore.
Even though she had so many things to say, she couldn't say a word when she looked at Jeffrey.
Suddenly, Jeffrey was overwhelmed with bitterness. It seemed that Evelyn didn't want to talk to him anymore. After a moment of silence, she whispered, "I'm fine. I'm not injured. They have caught the kidnapper, so you can rest assured."
After hearing that, Jeffrey tightened his clench slightly.
Then, he smiled gently at her.
"Well, I see. It's getting late, so I'll go back first."
In response to that, Evelyn nodded.
Only then did Jeffrey turned around and left.
Watching him leave, Evelyn frowned slightly. It wasn't until he entered the elevator that she let out an unnoticeable sigh.
Behind her, Carrie said in a low voice, "Evelyn, Mr. Biden has gone. Let's go back inside."
Evelyn nodded and said to Aria and the rest, "Thank you for your hard work tonight."
Immediately, Aria bowed respectfully. "It's nothing. It's what we should do."
After that, Evelyn didn't say anything further, as she turned around and went in with Carrie.
As the night fell, Evelyn had a deep sleep that night.
The exhaustion accumulated for the last two days was swept away after that sleep.
When she woke up the next day, it was already nine o'clock in the morning.
As Carrie didn't leave last night, she slept in the guest room.
Therefore, when she got up, breakfast was already served on the table in the dining room. Carrie noticed she was awake, and immediately greeted her with a smile. "Evelyn, you're awake."
With a smile, Evelyn responded. "Hmm." After having a look at the breakfast, she went to the French window in the living room and stretched herself with the sun shining through.
Perhaps it was because the sun came out after the rain, as today's weather was particularly good.
After more than ten days of gloomy weather, the sun finally came out today.
The sun shone on the snow on both sides of the road and treetops, giving off a dazzling light that was able to sweep away any sullenness.
After she did a simple stretch, she went back to the table and began to eat breakfast.
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Immediately putting down her spoon, Carrie said, "I'll get it!"
Then she ran to the door in a hurry.
Unexpectedly, the moment the door was opened, Marty came.
When she saw Marty, Carrie was startled, but Evelyn was not surprised at all. She stood up and said with a smile, "Have you had breakfast?"
In response, Marty shook his head. "Not yet."
Realizing the situation, Carrie quickly said, "I'll go get an extra bowl and spoon."
Then, a new set of the plate and utensils were brought to the table.
Fortunately, Carrie had prepared a lot of food. Not only there was enough food for Marty, it was enough for Aria and the rest who had been guarding outside the door for a whole night.
On the other hand, Evelyn noticed that Marty looked a little tired, and there were faint dark circles under his eyes, which indicated that he hadn't slept all night.
As she served him a bowl of oats, she asked, "How was it? Have you figured out the situation last night?"
Lowering his head, Marty ate a mouthful of oats, then said in a low voice, "He basically confessed everything. At this stage, there's no point for him to hide anything. He took us to the old factory last night and moved the bodies out of the basement."
Hearing this, although Evelyn already knew that was the result, she couldn't help but felt nauseous.
Suppressing the disgust, she asked, "Are those people really dead?"
In response to the question, Marty nodded.
As if he was afraid that she would be worried, he looked up at her calmly, and said, "Those are the people who usually commit crimes and violate the law. They were probably considered infighting, so you don't have to feel too upset about it."
Hearing that, Evelyn forced a smile.
Logically speaking, it was the truth, but, after all, they were people she had seen before, and all of a sudden they were all dead. Moreover, they died in such a cruel way.
No matter how hard she tried, she still felt uncomfortable at heart.
After all, she was just a normal person. Although she grew up living a rough life, in the end, under the protection of her mother, she had not seen too much of the true darkness of the world.
Hence, that was the reason why she felt so incredibly uncomfortable this time.
After the meal, because Evelyn had to go to the police station, Marty went with her to go through the process.
In truth, everything was settled, so it was only a regulatory procedure. As a result, it was completed in less than half an hour.
And Marty didn't let Forbos to see her again, because there was no need for that.
Because she had already seen the darkness and filth of this world once, there was no need to see it for the second time.
Coming out of the police station, Marty said directly, "They will continue to investigate the accomplices involved in the case, so you don't have to worry about the rest. But because your identity is special, you'd better have two bodyguards with you when you out next time. I'll arrange it for you. They're very trustworthy and experienced, and it's good for you to have them around."
If it was in the past, Evelyn might have refused this request.
But now, she did not say anything. Instead, she nodded and accepted it.
Knowing that right now, she didn't have the right to refuse him.
In the past, she used to think that she was very strong, and so strong that she didn't need anyone's protection, as she could rely on herself to protect herself and her mother.
However, after this incident, she realized that her so-called 'strongness' was actually not worth mentioning in front of a person with true power.
Not to mention the people in power, she couldn't fight against ruffians like Forbos.
Therefore, whether it was for her or for her mother, she had no reason to refuse.
Seeing that she had accepted her arrangement, Marty was in a good mood, as he reached out and held her hand.
Froze slightly, Evelyn turned to look at him.
However, she realized he was not looking at her, as he turned to look outside of the window.
But, Evelyn noticed the slight upcurve of his lips from looking at the side of his face, which revealed his happiness.
All of a sudden, Evelyn's heart was softened. The warm sunshine came in through the window, and seemed to shine directly on her heart.
In that moment, she thought silently in her heart.
Perhaps, it was not bad to be like this.
It was really good. To be with Marty and her mother, she didn't have to think about anything else and didn't want to think about anything else.
